Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
For several seconds, I could hear nothing but the rain hammering against the roof.
My father's name hung between us.
Impossible.
Wrong.
Cruel.
I stared at Ethan.
“My father died eleven years ago.””
“I know.””
“He couldn't have ordered anything.””
“I know.””
“Then don't say his name like that.””
Ethan didn't flinch.
“I said what I said.””
Detective Hale stepped forward.
“You'd better start explaining.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Not here.””
Hale tightened his grip on his weapon.
“You're a wanted person connected to an eight-year-old disappearance.””
“I disappeared because your department was paid to make sure I did.””
“That is a serious allegation.””
“Then investigate it.””
Hale's eyes narrowed.
“Who paid them?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Your father.””
My stomach turned.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it's true.””
“You're telling me my father paid people to disappear you, then somehow arranged for Lily to be injured eight years after he died?””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“That's not what happened.””
He walked toward the blue ledger.
I held it against my chest.
“Don't.””
He stopped.
“You need to know what your father actually did.””
“I knew my father.””
“No, Nora.””
His voice softened.
“You knew the man he allowed you to know.””
I felt the words hit harder than any accusation.
My father had been Colonel Daniel Whitaker.
Decorated.
Disciplined.
Quiet.
He had taught me how to tie my boots, clean a weapon, read a map, and never make a promise I couldn't keep.
He had also taught me that family was supposed to mean something.
Ethan reached into his coat.
Hale immediately raised his weapon.
“Slowly.””
Ethan pulled out a folded photograph.
He held it between two fingers.
“This was taken two days before I disappeared.””
I took it.
My father stood beside Ethan.
But they weren't alone.
A group of men stood behind them.
One was a county judge.
Another was a hospital administrator.
Another was a man I recognized from the photograph in the house.
The scarred man.
Except he was younger.
And standing beside him was Margaret.
I looked at Ethan.
“What is this?””
“A meeting.””
“About what?””
“Lily.””
I stared at him.
“She wasn't even born yet.””
“Exactly.””
Hale stepped closer.
“Then explain.””
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“Your father discovered that Margaret was using the Whitaker family foundation to move money through the hospital.””
“Why?””
“Medical kickbacks. Insurance fraud. Political favors. Whatever kept powerful people protected.””
“That doesn't explain Lily.””
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“It explains why your father started investigating.””
I turned another page in the ledger.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
My father's handwriting appeared beside several entries.
*VERIFY.*
*CROSS-CHECK.*
*DO NOT TRUST M.*
I looked up.
“He was investigating his own family?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't he tell me?””
“Because he thought keeping you ignorant would keep you safe.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“It didn't.””
“No.””
Ethan looked toward the lake.
“It made you easier to control.””
Hale folded his arms.
“Tell us about your disappearance.””
Ethan's face hardened.
“I found evidence that Margaret had paid a doctor to falsify records for several children.””
My blood chilled.
“Children?””
“Families who couldn't fight back. Injuries were called accidents. Abuse was written off as clumsiness. The same pattern you saw with Lily.””
Hale's expression changed.
“How many?””
“I don't know.””
“And Lily?””
“She became part of it because Margaret realized Daniel had a weakness.””
“Me?””
Ethan nodded.
“Your father.””
I stared at him.
“Lily wasn't born.””
“She wasn't the target.””
“Then who was?””
Ethan looked at the ledger.
“You.””
I shook my head.
“Why?””
“Because your father trusted you.””
Hale interrupted.
“What happened eight years ago?””
Ethan's eyes lowered.
“I confronted Margaret.””
“About the records?””
“Yes.””
“What did she do?””
“She told me Daniel had already chosen sides.””
My heart stopped.
“My father?””
“She said he'd made a deal.””
“With whom?””
“Her.””
I stared at him.
“I didn't believe her.””
“So you confronted him?””
Ethan nodded.
“And?””
“He told me to leave town.””
“Why?””
“He said people were watching me.””
“Who?””
“I asked the same question.””
Ethan looked at me.
“He never answered.””
“What happened next?””
“I left.””
He swallowed.
“I didn't get far.””
Hale's voice became quiet.
“Who took you?””
Ethan looked toward the rain.
“Calvin.””
I stopped breathing.
“My husband?””
“He was waiting at the road.””
“What did he do?””
“Nothing.””
I stared at him.
“Nothing?””
“He opened the car door and told me to get in.””
“And you did?””
“I thought he was helping me.””
Ethan's mouth tightened.
“He wasn't.””
I stepped closer.
“What happened?””
“Calvin drove me to the lake.””
Hale asked, “And Margaret?””
“She was already there.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Three men.
Margaret.
My father.
My hands trembled.
“What did she want?””
Ethan's voice became almost a whisper.
“The ledger.””
I looked down.
“This one?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't she destroy it?””
“She thought she had.””
“Then how did my father get it?””
Ethan looked at me.
“He gave it to me.””
I stared.
“Then why is it here?””
“Because I brought it back.””
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
My heart stopped.
“You came to my house.””
“Yes.””
“You saw Lily?””
“Yes.””
“Did you hurt her?””
His face broke.
“No.””
“Did you touch her?””
“No.””
“Then why did she know your name?””
“Because I spoke to her.””
“Where?””
“Your backyard.””
I felt sick.
“She saw you?””
“She did.””
“What did you tell her?””
“That if anything happened to her, she should tell you about me.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew Margaret was watching your family.””
Hale stepped forward.
“Then who hurt Lily?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Calvin.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“He did.””
“Lily said he didn't.””
“She was protecting him.””
“Why?””
“Because he asked her to.””
I thought about the hospital.
Daddy didn't push me.
Grandma told me what to say.
Ethan continued.
“Calvin isn't innocent.””
“Then why are you saying he's not the one I should fear?””
“Because he was trying to keep her alive.””
Hale frowned.
“By hurting her?””
“No.””
Ethan's voice broke.
“By making it look like someone else was hurting her.””
The world seemed to tilt.
“What?””
“Calvin knew Margaret was going to take Lily.””
“Why?””
“Because Lily had seen something.””
“What?””
“She saw Margaret threaten a nurse.””
I stared at him.
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
“The same time you came to my house.””
“Yes.””
Hale looked at the ledger.
“Who is the nurse?””
Ethan hesitated.
“Her name is Elena Brooks.””
My stomach tightened.
The ICU nurse.
The one who had been in Lily's room.
The one who had told us the supposed hospital worker didn't have a badge.
“Is she safe?””
Ethan shook his head.
“I don't know.””
My phone rang.
Dr. Reyes.
I answered immediately.
“Doctor?””
His voice was low.
“Nora, don't come back to the hospital yet.””
“Why?””
“There's been a security breach.””
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice trembled.
“You don't understand.””
“What happened?””
“Someone entered Lily's room.””
My blood froze.
“She was under observation.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
“I was there.””
A pause.
“Where is Lily?””
“Nora…”
“Where is my daughter?””
“She disappeared.””
The phone slipped against my palm.
Hale grabbed my arm.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“Lily is gone.””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“You knew this would happen?””
He shook his head.
“Not this soon.””
My phone rang again.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman's voice whispered:
“Your father left you one final instruction.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who is this?””
The woman laughed softly.
“You'll find out when you open the coffin.””
The line went dead.
Hale stared at me.
“What coffin?””
May you like
Ethan looked toward the lake.
“Your father's.””
