Chapter 9: The Sister I Never Knew
For several seconds, nobody understood what Alexander had said.
Not because the words were complicated.
Because they were impossible.
*Emily Carter’s secret daughter.*
I stared at the screen.
Then at Alexander.
Then at Michael.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Michael looked like he had been struck.
“Impossible.””
Alexander didn’t look away.
“I verified the records myself.””
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
“My mother had another daughter?””
Nobody answered.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because my entire life had just become a stranger’s story.
A father who hid the truth.
A stepmother who destroyed my family.
An uncle who was supposed to be dead.
And now…
A sister.
A person who had existed somewhere in the world while I grew up believing I was alone.
“No,” I repeated.
Michael stepped closer.
“Ava…”
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
His silence lasted too long.
My heart sank.
“You knew.””
He looked down.
“I knew there was someone.””
My chest tightened.
“Someone?””
Michael swallowed.
“I didn’t know where she was.””
My voice became sharper.
“You knew my mother had another child and you never told me?””
“I didn’t know how.””
I stared at him.
“How?””
He looked at me with sadness.
“Because Emily wanted to tell you herself.””
The room went quiet.
My mother.
Again.
Always my mother.
I looked at the documents.
“What happened?””
Alexander placed the file on the table.
“The transfer records were completed six months before Emily’s death.””
I looked at him.
“Why would she give the estate to someone else?””
He opened the folder.
“Because the estate was never just a property.””
“What does that mean?””
“It was created as a protected asset.””
He pointed to the documents.
“Your grandfather established it years ago. The ownership was designed to pass to the person Emily believed needed protection most.””
I frowned.
“My sister?””
Alexander nodded.
“Your half-sister.””
The word felt strange.
Half-sister.
A family connection I had never known existed.
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at her.
It wasn’t a happy laugh.
It was bitter.
“So that’s it?””
She shook her head.
“After all these years, Emily still found a way to make everything about her.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew.””
Her expression changed.
“I knew Emily had secrets.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You knew about her daughter.””
Vanessa’s silence answered.
Brielle looked at her mother.
“Mom…”
Vanessa ignored her.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
I looked at her.
“You keep saying that.””
My voice was shaking.
“But you never explain.””
Vanessa looked at the letter in my hand.
“She was going to leave everything to her.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Because Emily felt guilty.””
My heart stopped.
“Guilty?””
“Yes.””
Michael’s expression hardened.
“That’s not true.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“You weren’t there.””
“I knew Emily better than you ever did.””
Vanessa smiled coldly.
“Did you?””
The question landed.
Michael went quiet.
I looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Nobody answered.
Then Claire spoke.
“Emily had another life before Daniel.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
Claire looked at me sadly.
“Before she married your father, Emily had a daughter.””
My head spun.
“How old was she?””
“She was a baby.””
I swallowed.
“What happened?””
Claire looked at Michael.
He nodded slowly.
“Her name was Lily.””
The name felt unfamiliar.
But somehow important.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Then Alexander said:
“She was adopted.””
I stared.
“Adopted?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked down.
“Because Emily believed she couldn’t give Lily the life she deserved.””
I felt a strange sadness.
For a woman I had never met.
For a sister I never knew existed.
I imagined my mother holding another baby.
Loving another child.
Losing another piece of herself.
My eyes burned.
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Michael answered softly.
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would think she loved you less.””
The words broke something inside me.
Because suddenly, for the first time, I understood.
My mother wasn’t hiding Lily because she didn’t care.
She was hiding her because she cared too much.
I looked down at the letter again.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked at me.
I turned the page.
I hadn’t noticed the second side before.
My hands shook as I read.
*Ava, if you know about Lily, please understand something.*
I stopped.
My mother had written her name.
*You were never a replacement.*
A tear fell.
*You were never less loved.*
I covered my mouth.
The room became blurry.
*You were my miracle after I thought I had lost the chance to be a mother again.*
I closed my eyes.
My mother’s words continued.
*But Lily deserves the truth too. She deserves to know where she came from.*
I looked up.
“She knew?””
Michael nodded.
“She found Lily years ago.””
My eyes widened.
“She found her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she bring her home?””
Claire answered.
“Because Lily had a family.””
I understood.
My mother hadn’t wanted to take someone’s child away.
She had wanted to give her the truth.
I looked at Alexander.
“Where is she?””
He hesitated.
That scared me.
“What?””
He looked at the file.
“Emily left instructions.””
“About what?””
“About when Lily should be contacted.””
“And?””
Alexander looked at me.
“The condition was that the information could only be released after your twenty-second birthday.””
My birthday.
The same year Vanessa threw me out.
The same year I discovered everything.
I whispered:
“Why?””
Alexander looked at the papers.
“Because Emily believed you would need each other.””
My chest tightened.
“You mean she knew this day would happen?””
“Not exactly.””
He shook his head.
“But she knew Vanessa might eventually try to remove you from the family home.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
She became still.
My mother had predicted this.
Years ago.
The room felt colder.
“She knew?””
Michael nodded.
“Emily knew Vanessa wanted control.””
My father whispered:
“She knew and I didn’t listen.””
Nobody answered him.
Then Alexander reached into the folder.
“There is one final document.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He handed it to me.
“This is a letter from Emily regarding Vanessa.””
My eyes moved to my stepmother.
She looked terrified.
I opened it.
The first sentence made my stomach drop.
*If Vanessa is still in Ava’s life when she reads this, then I failed to protect my daughter.*
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face had gone completely pale.
I kept reading.
*Vanessa was never my friend.*
A silence filled the room.
*She entered my life because she wanted access to what I had built.*
Vanessa whispered:
“Liar.””
Nobody listened.
*She will convince people she loves them. She will make them feel chosen. Then she will slowly take everything that belongs to them.*
My eyes lifted.
Because that was exactly what she had done.
Not just with money.
With my father.
With my home.
With my memories.
The letter continued.
*But Ava, do not let hatred consume you. The truth is not meant to destroy you. It is meant to free you.*
I folded the letter.
For the first time that night, I didn’t feel like someone who had lost everything.
I felt like someone who had finally found herself.
Then Alexander’s phone rang again.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What happened?””
Everyone watched him.
He listened.
Then slowly looked at me.
“Ms. Carter.””
I stood.
“What?””
His voice was quiet.
“We found Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
He looked at the screen.
“She’s been living less than thirty miles from here.””
The room went silent.
“Does she know about me?””
Alexander hesitated.
“No.””
I swallowed.
“Does she know about Emily?””
He looked at me.
“No.””
My hands went cold.
“Then why are you looking for her?””
Alexander didn’t answer.
Instead, he turned the phone around.
On the screen was a photograph.
A woman.
Around my age.
Dark hair.
My mother’s eyes.
I stared.
Because even though I had never met her…
I knew her.
Not from memory.
Not from stories.
From the face looking back at me.
Alexander whispered:
“She found out about the estate today.””
I frowned.
“How?””
He looked toward Vanessa.
And my blood ran cold.
“Because someone sent her a message.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Alexander lowered his voice.
“The message came from an anonymous number.””
A pause.
Then:
“But the investigators traced the account.””
Everyone waited.
Alexander looked directly at Vanessa.
“The message was sent from a device registered in this house.””
Vanessa’s face went white.
And suddenly, I realized.
The secret daughter wasn’t just the missing piece of my mother’s story.
She was the reason someone had started panicking again.
May you like
Because whoever destroyed my family eighteen years ago…
Was terrified Lily had finally come home.
