Chapter 8: The Enemy Wearing A Familiar Face
The warehouse went completely dark.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then the emergency lights flickered on, casting the room in a weak red glow.
And there he was.
Derek Collins stood near the entrance.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
Not a trace of panic.
The same man who had thrown Walter into the rain.
The same man who had taken my job.
The same man who had turned my face into a headline.
But now I saw him differently.
Not as a rude manager.
Not as a powerful executive.
As someone dangerous.
“Amara,” Derek said softly.
The way he said my name made my skin crawl.
Like he knew me.
Like he had been watching me long before that night outside the restaurant.
Walter stepped in front of me.
“Stay away from her.””
Derek smiled.
“Still protecting strangers, Walter?””
Walter’s expression hardened.
“You don’t get to talk about protecting people.””
Derek looked around the warehouse.
Then at Emily.
“I see you finally came home.””
Emily stared at him.
“You knew I was alive.””
It wasn’t a question.
Derek didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
I looked at him.
“You knew she was alive this entire time?””
Derek glanced at me.
“You have no idea what you’ve walked into.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Funny. That’s what everyone keeps telling me.””
Derek ignored me.
His attention stayed on Walter.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
Walter stepped forward.
“You framed me.””
“I protected the company.””
“You stole from me.””
Derek’s expression changed slightly.
Not guilt.
Annoyance.
“After everything I did for you, this is what you think?””
Emily shook her head.
“You still believe you’re the victim.””
Derek looked at her.
“You have no idea what your father created.””
Walter’s voice became colder.
“Don’t.””
But Derek continued.
“He built an empire and convinced himself that money could solve every problem.””
His eyes moved toward Walter.
“Even family.””
The words landed.
Because they were cruel.
But because part of them was true.
Walter looked away.
Derek noticed.
And smiled.
“That’s what I always admired about you, Walter.””
A pause.
“You could control a billion-dollar company.””
He stepped closer.
“But you couldn’t control your own home.””
Emily’s face tightened.
“Don’t talk about my family.””
Derek looked at her.
“Your father ignored you.””
Silence.
“He ignored your warnings.””
Walter closed his eyes.
“And when you disappeared, he chose his reputation over the truth.””
“Enough.””
Walter’s voice shook.
But Derek didn’t stop.
“Tell her, Walter.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me what?””
Nobody answered.
My eyes moved between them.
“Tell me what?””
Walter looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“I made mistakes.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Derek smiled.
“Of course he won’t tell you.””
I turned toward him.
“Then you tell me.””
Derek looked surprised.
“You trust me?””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“But I know everyone here is hiding something.””
That made him pause.
For the first time, Derek looked uncertain.
Emily moved closer.
“Amara, don’t listen to him.””
Derek laughed quietly.
“Interesting.””
“What?””
“He already told you about me.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Derek looked at Walter.
“Did he tell you about the night Emily disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Did he tell you why he was really there?””
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Walter.
He looked away.
That was enough.
“No.””
Derek smiled.
“Exactly.””
Walter’s voice became sharp.
“Derek.””
“No.””
Derek shook his head.
“You spent six months pretending you were searching for the truth.””
He pointed at Walter.
“But you were running from it.””
Emily stepped forward.
“Stop lying.””
Derek looked at her.
“You know I’m not.””
The tension in the room became unbearable.
I looked at Walter.
“Why were you really there that night?””
He didn’t answer.
My voice broke.
“Walter.””
Finally, he spoke.
“I wasn’t there just because Emily called me.””
“Then why?””
He took a breath.
“Because I knew someone was stealing from the company.””
I waited.
“And?””
“And I suspected it was connected to Emily.””
Emily looked hurt.
“You suspected me?””
“No.””
Walter shook his head quickly.
“Not you.””
“Then who?””
He looked at Derek.
Derek didn’t react.
“I thought someone was using you.””
Emily’s expression changed.
“You thought I was being manipulated.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t trust me enough to tell me?””
Walter looked destroyed.
“I was afraid.””
The answer surprised everyone.
“Afraid of what?””
“Losing you.””
Emily looked away.
“You already did.””
The silence afterward was painful.
Even Derek stopped smiling.
Then Emily reached into her bag.
“We don’t have time for this.””
She pulled out a small device.
“This contains everything.””
Derek’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked worried.
“Give me that.””
Emily stepped back.
“No.””
Derek’s calm disappeared.
“Emily.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You spent six months making everyone believe my father abandoned me.””
She looked at Walter.
“You made him think I was gone forever.””
Then she looked at Derek.
“I lost my family because of you.””
Derek’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand what happens if that information gets out.””
“Good.””
She held the device tighter.
“Maybe people should finally know.””
Suddenly, the warehouse doors opened.
Several men entered.
Not police.
Not security.
Private guards.
Walter immediately moved toward Emily.
Derek looked calm again.
“You see?””
He said quietly.
“This is why people like us survive.””
He looked at me.
“Because we understand power.””
I stared at him.
“You mean fear.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“Fear is just another form of power.””
I felt sick.
Walter looked at Derek.
“You used me.””
Derek shrugged.
“I learned from you.””
That sentence seemed to hurt Walter more than any threat.
The guards moved closer.
Charles whispered:
“We need an exit.””
Walter nodded.
I looked around.
There had to be another way out.
Then I saw it.
A small side door.
“Over there.””
Emily followed my eyes.
She nodded.
Walter moved first.
The guards noticed.
Everything happened at once.
Shouting.
Footsteps.
Chaos.
Charles pushed a shelf over, blocking the path.
Emily grabbed my hand.
“Come on.””
We ran.
Behind us, Derek shouted.
“Amara!””
I stopped for half a second.
Not because I wanted to.
Because of the way he said my name.
Like he knew something.
I turned.
Derek stood in the middle of the warehouse.
“You really think Walter saved you?””
I froze.
“What?””
His smile returned.
“He didn’t tell you why he chose you.””
Walter looked back.
“Derek, stop.””
But Derek continued.
“The restaurant.””
My heart started racing.
“What about it?””
“You think it was random?””
The world seemed to slow.
Walter’s face changed.
And that was when I knew.
He knew what Derek was talking about.
“You knew I worked there.””
Silence.
I looked at Walter.
“You knew?””
Walter opened his mouth.
No words came out.
Derek smiled.
“There it is.””
Emily looked shocked.
“Dad?””
I stepped back.
My chest tightened.
“Walter.””
He looked at me.
“I can explain.””
The worst words anyone could say.
Because they usually meant the truth was worse.
“Explain what?””
He looked broken.
“I was looking for someone.””
“Someone?””
His eyes met mine.
“Someone who reminded me of Emily.””
I felt hurt.
Not because he needed help.
Because I wondered if I had ever truly been a person to him.
Or just a replacement for someone he lost.
Derek laughed.
“You weren’t a random waitress.””
He pointed at me.
“You were chosen.””
The rain started again outside.
Heavy.
Loud.
Like the night everything began.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Amara, don’t listen to him.””
But I looked at Walter.
Because I needed to hear it from him.
“Is it true?””
Walter didn’t answer.
And that silence broke something inside me.
The guards were getting closer.
The warehouse was closing in around us.
But none of that mattered.
Because the man I thought I saved…
Had been searching for me all along.
Walter finally whispered:
“Yes.””
A pause.
“I knew who you were before you ever saw me in the rain.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“But I never knew…”
May you like
His voice cracked.
“That you were Emily’s sister.””
