Chapter 5: The Daughter Who Left A Warning
The letter trembled in my hands.
Not because it was heavy.
Because of what it meant.
Someone had planned this.
Someone had known Walter would need help.
Someone had known that one person would stop in the rain and treat him like a human being instead of a problem.
And somehow, that person was me.
I looked at Walter.
The color had disappeared from his face.
“Walter…”
He didn’t respond.
He was staring at the handwriting like it was a ghost.
“Do you recognize it?””
His fingers slowly touched the edge of the paper.
“Yes.””
His voice was barely audible.
“It’s Emily’s.””
The name carried pain.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Pain.
I looked back down at the letter.
*My father didn’t disappear. Someone made him disappear.*
The sentence felt impossible.
“You said Emily was missing.””
Walter nodded.
“She was.””
“For how long?””
“Six months.””
I stared at him.
“And you never found her?””
He looked away.
“I searched everywhere.””
The sadness in his voice was unbearable.
“I hired investigators. I contacted every person who knew her. I spent millions trying to find her.””
“But nothing?””
“Nothing.””
The wind moved through the alley.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Walter said something that surprised me.
“She didn’t want to be found.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“When Emily disappeared, everyone assumed something happened to her.””
“Didn’t it?””
Walter looked at the letter.
“I thought so.””
“But now?””
He swallowed.
“Now I think she was hiding.””
I looked at the paper again.
The words seemed different now.
Not like a goodbye.
Like a message.
Like a warning.
I carefully unfolded the rest.
There was more.
*If you found this, you need to understand one thing. Trust nobody from Madden Global.*
My eyes moved to Walter.
The company he built.
The company he loved.
The company that was now controlled by the people trying to destroy him.
Below that was another sentence.
*The betrayal started before my disappearance.*
Walter stood suddenly.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“Why?””
“Because Emily didn’t know enough.””
“She knew something.””
“She was angry with me.””
His voice became emotional.
“She thought I cared more about the company than my family.””
I softened.
“Maybe she was right.””
Walter looked hurt.
I immediately regretted saying it.
But he didn’t get angry.
Instead, he nodded.
“She was.””
That answer surprised me.
“I spent years telling myself I was building a better future for her.””
He looked down.
“But I missed the years when she needed me.””
The honesty in his voice made him seem less like a billionaire.
More like a father who had lost time he could never get back.
I folded the letter.
“We need to find her.””
Walter looked at me.
“You still believe she’s alive?””
I thought about the message.
The careful handwriting.
The fact that she had left something behind.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because someone who wants to disappear doesn’t leave a trail.””
A faint sadness crossed his face.
“You sound like her.””
I smiled slightly.
“Is that a compliment?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“From Emily, it would be.””
Before we could say more, my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
My blood ran cold.
It was a photograph.
A picture of Lily leaving her apartment.
Underneath was a message.
*You should have stayed out of this.*
My breathing stopped.
Walter saw my expression.
“What happened?””
I showed him the phone.
The moment he saw the picture, his face changed.
“Who is Lily?””
“My sister.””
His eyes darkened.
“They’re moving faster than I expected.””
I immediately called her.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
My hands started shaking.
“Lily, pick up.””
Straight to voicemail.
Walter grabbed his phone.
“I know someone who can help.””
“Who?””
“A former security director.””
“You mean someone from your company?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“The same company you told me not to trust?””
“Not everyone there betrayed me.””
“Do you know who did?””
“No.””
That answer frightened me more than anything.
Because Walter Madden had spent decades surrounded by powerful people.
And now he didn’t know which ones wanted him destroyed.
We moved quickly through the city.
Walter knew how to avoid cameras.
How to change direction.
How to disappear.
It was strange watching him.
The man who had looked powerless outside the restaurant moved like someone who had spent years protecting himself.
Finally, we reached an old office building downtown.
The sign outside was faded.
No advertisements.
No luxury.
Nothing that connected it to Walter Madden.
Inside, an elderly man sat behind a desk covered with files.
He looked up.
Then immediately stood.
“Walter.””
They shook hands.
“Charles.””
The man looked at me.
“And she is?””
“Amara.””
Charles studied me.
“The woman from the news?””
I stiffened.
Walter stepped forward.
“She saved my life.””
Charles looked surprised.
Then he nodded slowly.
“Then she’s already involved.””
I didn’t like how many people kept saying that.
“What does everyone mean by that?””
Charles looked at Walter.
“You haven’t told her everything?””
Walter stayed silent.
That was becoming a habit.
Charles sighed.
“Of course you haven’t.””
I crossed my arms.
“I’m standing right here.””
Charles looked apologetic.
“You deserve answers.””
“Finally.””
He walked toward a cabinet and pulled out a file.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Reports.
He placed them on the desk.
“The night Walter disappeared, someone accessed a restricted section of Madden Global.””
Walter looked at the papers.
“Who?””
“We don’t know.””
Charles pointed to a document.
“But they were searching for this.””
I looked closer.
A company project.
*Project Eden.*
“What is that?””
Walter’s face became serious.
“Something that was never supposed to exist.””
That was not an answer.
Charles continued.
“Project Eden was a private investigation Walter funded years ago.””
“Investigation into what?””
Walter looked at the floor.
“Corruption.””
Charles nodded.
“He discovered people inside his own company were manipulating accounts, stealing money, and hiding illegal deals.””
“And Emily found out?””
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
I looked at Walter.
“Your daughter was investigating your company?””
Walter nodded.
“She told me something was wrong.””
“And you didn’t believe her?””
His silence answered for him.
Charles continued.
“Emily gathered evidence.””
“Where is it?””
Nobody answered.
Then Walter said:
“She hid it.””
“Where?””
Charles looked at him.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
Suddenly, the lights flickered.
Everyone stopped.
Charles looked toward the window.
“That’s not normal.””
A second later, the security alarm started.
Loud.
Sharp.
Walter immediately moved.
“What happened?””
Charles checked his computer.
His face changed.
“Someone accessed the building.””
“Who?””
Charles looked at the screen.
Then whispered:
“No.””
Walter stepped closer.
“What?””
Charles turned the monitor.
A security camera showed the entrance.
A woman was standing outside.
Dark coat.
Wet hair.
Looking directly at the camera.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized her.
Even though I had never met her before.
Because her face was on the old photograph inside Walter’s wallet.
Emily.
Walter’s daughter.
The woman he thought had vanished forever.
Walter stepped toward the screen.
His voice broke.
“Emily.””
The camera flickered.
Then went black.
A message appeared on the screen.
Only four words.
*Your daughter is alive.*
Everyone stared.
Then another message appeared.
This time addressed to me.
*Amara, ask your new friend why he never told you the truth.*
I looked at Walter.
His face had gone pale.
May you like
Because the final message appeared beneath it.
*He knows why Emily disappeared.*
