Chapter 8: The Voice That Was Never Supposed to Be Heard
“Michael…”
The voice on the phone repeated my name.
For a second, my mind refused to accept what my ears were hearing.
It was impossible.
Sarah had been gone for twenty years.
Twenty years since I last heard her laugh.
Twenty years since I last saw her walking toward her car in the rain.
Twenty years since I stood at a funeral pretending I was strong enough to say goodbye.
But now…
She was speaking.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
A voice.
A real voice.
“Sarah?””
The word came out broken.
Everyone in the room froze.
Zoria’s eyes widened.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
The person on the other end was silent for a moment.
Then a shaky breath.
“Michael, if this is playing, it means you finally found the message.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“How?””
My voice cracked.
“How are you…”
I stopped.
Because the question was impossible.
The voice continued.
“I know you’re confused.””
A small pause.
“I know you probably think this is some kind of trick.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Terrified.
“Who is this?”” Zoria whispered.
I put the phone on speaker.
Sarah’s voice filled the room.
“This recording was made twenty years ago.””
The air left my lungs.
“I knew there was a chance you would never hear it.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
A recording.
Not Sarah herself.
A piece of her left behind.
But somehow that hurt even more.
Because it meant she had known.
She had prepared for the possibility that the truth would be buried.
“I’m sorry, Michael.””
Her voice trembled.
“I’m sorry you’re hearing this after everything has already happened.””
I sat down.
Zoria sat beside me.
Neither of us moved.
Sarah continued.
“If Daniel is the one who gave you this, don’t trust him.””
My heart tightened.
“If Evelyn is there…”
The recording paused.
And I looked at my wife.
Sarah’s voice softened.
“Evelyn, I hope you understand why I asked you to protect this.””
Evelyn started crying.
“Protect what?”” Zoria whispered.
Nobody answered.
Sarah continued.
“I need Michael to know the truth about what happened at the company.””
I leaned forward.
The room disappeared.
Twenty years vanished.
“I found the missing records.””
My heart started beating faster.
“The money wasn’t lost because of a mistake.””
A pause.
“It was moved.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She closed her eyes.
“By Daniel.””
The words landed like a final piece clicking into place.
Sarah continued.
“I confronted him because I thought he would admit it.””
A quiet, painful laugh.
“I thought my friendship with him mattered.””
My fists tightened.
“But Daniel didn’t apologize.””
The recording became quieter.
“He told me something I will never forget.””
The next sentence made my blood run cold.
“He said, ‘People like Michael need someone else to make decisions for them.’”
I stared at the phone.
Because that sounded exactly like Daniel.
Not someone who thought he was evil.
Someone who thought he was right.
Sarah continued.
“He believed he was protecting you.””
A pause.
“But he wasn’t.””
I looked at Zoria.
“He was protecting himself.””
The room stayed silent.
Then Sarah said something I didn’t expect.
“Michael, there is something else you need to know.””
My breathing slowed.
“Your job loss wasn’t an accident.””
My eyes closed.
I felt the old wound open again.
The humiliation.
The shame.
The years of wondering if I had failed.
Sarah’s voice continued.
“Daniel helped create the situation that forced you out.””
I felt numb.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just numb.
“He convinced the board you were responsible for the financial issues.””
The phone almost slipped from my hand.
“But you weren’t.””
A tear fell from my eye before I could stop it.
Because for twenty years, I had carried guilt that wasn’t mine.
Sarah’s voice softened.
“You spent so many years believing you destroyed everything.””
A pause.
“You didn’t.””
Nobody spoke.
Then she said:
“You were betrayed.””
The recording stopped for a few seconds.
Then continued.
“I wanted to tell you sooner.””
A shaky breath.
“But after the accident, I didn’t know who I could trust.””
My eyes opened.
“The accident.””
The words echoed.
Sarah continued.
“I need you to understand something.””
The sound quality changed slightly.
Like she was closer to the microphone.
“I didn’t crash because I was careless.””
I froze.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at me.
Sarah’s voice continued.
“Someone tampered with my car.””
The room went completely still.
Zoria grabbed my hand.
“Dad…”
I couldn’t respond.
“Sarah was killed?””
The question left my mouth.
But the recording continued.
“I don’t know if Daniel caused it.””
That sentence surprised me.
“He might have.””
A pause.
“Or he might have been trying to scare me.””
My chest tightened.
“But I know one thing.””
The recording became clearer.
“He knew something was going to happen.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She was crying silently.
Sarah continued.
“That’s why I gave Evelyn the key.””
The key.
The safety deposit box.
“The evidence inside proves what happened.””
My mind raced.
“Then why didn’t she give it to me?””
I looked at Evelyn.
She looked away.
Sarah continued.
“Evelyn, if you’re listening, I know you were afraid.””
My wife covered her face.
“I know you thought keeping quiet would protect Michael.””
A pause.
“But silence only helped Daniel.””
The words hit hard.
Because they were true.
Sarah’s voice became softer.
“Michael, the reason I trusted Evelyn was because she was the only person who believed me.””
I looked at my wife.
“She wanted to tell you.””
Evelyn whispered:
“I did.””
I heard her.
But Sarah continued.
“She wanted to tell you everything.””
Another pause.
“But Daniel threatened her.””
Zoria looked at her mother.
“What did he threaten?””
Evelyn couldn’t answer.
Sarah did.
“He threatened to expose the truth about Zoria’s birth.””
The room froze.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Zoria looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
I looked at Evelyn.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“Evelyn?””
She didn’t speak.
The recording continued.
“Michael, there is something about Zoria you need to know.””
My fingers tightened.
“Something Evelyn has been afraid to tell you.””
I stood up.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Because suddenly, I was afraid.
Not of Daniel.
Not of the truth.
Of what this could do to my daughter.
Sarah’s voice continued.
“Zoria is your daughter.””
I released a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.
But then:
“But Daniel used that fact to control Evelyn.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“After I discovered what Daniel had done, he found out Evelyn was pregnant.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“She was terrified.””
My wife cried harder.
“Daniel convinced her that if Michael knew everything about the past, he would leave.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Sarah continued.
“He made her believe she was protecting her baby by staying silent.””
Zoria looked at her mother.
“Mom…”
Evelyn finally spoke.
“I was young.””
Her voice broke.
“I was scared.””
I stared at her.
“You thought I would leave you?””
She looked at me.
“I thought you would hate me.””
The pain in her voice was real.
But the secrets were real too.
Sarah’s recording continued.
“Michael, the last thing I need you to know is the most important.””
The room went quiet again.
“There was another person involved.””
I frowned.
Another person?
“Daniel didn’t act alone.””
The phone suddenly crackled.
The recording became distorted.
Then Sarah’s voice returned.
“Look inside the safety deposit box.””
A pause.
“Everything you need is there.””
Then the final words.
Words that made my blood run cold.
“Because the person who helped Daniel destroy your life…”
Static.
A pause.
Then:
“…is someone you still call family.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
For several seconds, the only sound was the faint noise of the party outside.
Then Zoria’s phone buzzed.
She looked down.
Her face changed.
“Dad.””
“What?””
She turned the screen toward me.
A message.
From Daniel.
Not a warning.
Not a threat.
An invitation.
*If you want the full truth about Sarah, come alone.*
Another message appeared.
*Bring the key.*
I looked at Evelyn.
Her expression changed instantly.
Because she understood something I didn’t.
“What key?”” I asked.
She slowly reached into her pocket.
And pulled out a small silver object.
A key she had carried for twenty years.
She placed it in my hand.
Then whispered:
“Michael…”
I looked at her.
“Where is the safety deposit box?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Your brother knows where it is.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“And what’s inside?””
Evelyn swallowed.
“The reason Daniel has spent twenty years controlling everyone around him.””
I looked at the key.
Then at the message.
Daniel wanted me alone.
He wanted the key.
He wanted the truth.
But he had made one mistake.
He forgot one thing.
I wasn’t the same man who lost everything twenty years ago.
May you like
And this time…
I wasn’t walking into the truth alone.
