Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden in Sarah’s Journal
The photograph on my phone stayed frozen on the screen.
Sarah’s journal.
A book I thought was lost forever.
A book that contained answers I had spent twenty years searching for without even knowing I was searching.
But the sentence beneath it was the part I couldn’t escape.
*You finally found the letter. Now ask yourself why Evelyn helped me hide it.*
I looked up slowly.
My wife was still standing across from me.
Her face had lost all color.
Zoria noticed it too.
“Mom?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
She just stared at the phone in my hand.
That was when I understood.
Daniel wasn’t lying about one thing.
Evelyn knew more than she had told me.
“Did you know about the journal?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Michael…”
“Did you?””
She closed her eyes.
And that was enough.
I felt something inside me crack.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
Because anger means you still expect better.
Disappointment means you’re realizing someone has already shown you who they are.
“You knew.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“I knew it existed.””
“Where is it?””
“I don’t know.””
“Don’t do that.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost too quiet.
“Not now.””
She took a step toward me.
“I swear, I don’t have it.””
“Then why does Daniel?””
She didn’t answer.
Zoria looked between us.
“I don’t understand.””
Neither did I.
But I knew one thing.
There were too many secrets in this house.
Too many people deciding what I deserved to know.
I held up Sarah’s letter.
“Twenty years.””
Evelyn looked down.
“Michael…”
“Twenty years, Evelyn.””
My voice broke.
“She wrote this because she wanted me to know the truth.””
“I know.””
“You know?””
The words came out sharper.
“You knew she wrote this?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
She wiped her eyes.
“Because I was there.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“What?””
She sat down.
“I was there the night Sarah died.””
Zoria covered her mouth.
I couldn’t move.
“What are you saying?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“The night of the accident, I wasn’t at home.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Where were you?””
She swallowed.
“At the hospital.””
My mind raced.
“You never told me.””
“Because I didn’t want you to see me.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was the person Sarah called.””
The sentence hit harder than anything else.
I stepped back.
“Sarah called you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Evelyn looked at the floor.
“Because she knew something was wrong.””
I stared at her.
“What did she know?””
She took a shaky breath.
“She knew Daniel had been moving money.””
My hands tightened.
“From the company?””
She nodded.
“She had discovered missing funds.””
Zoria looked confused.
“Uncle Daniel stole?””
Evelyn looked at her.
“I don’t know if I would use that word.””
I looked at her.
“Why not?””
“Because I don’t know everything.””
That answer frustrated me.
Because after all these years, everyone seemed to have pieces.
Everyone except me.
“So Sarah called you.””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“She said Daniel was scared.””
“Scared?””
“Yes.””
“Of what?””
“That she would expose him.””
The room became completely silent.
I looked down at the letter again.
The person who ruined our company wasn’t your mistake.
My hands trembled.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Because Daniel convinced me not to.””
My jaw tightened.
“You listened to him?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not because I trusted him.””
“Then why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because Sarah was already gone.””
The answer confused me.
“What?””
Evelyn wiped her tears.
“When I arrived at the hospital, she was unconscious.””
I stared at her.
“Sarah was alive?””
“Yes.””
My heart stopped.
For twenty years, I had believed Sarah died instantly.
“She survived long enough to say something.””
“What?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“She asked about you.””
My eyes burned.
“She asked if I found you.””
I couldn’t speak.
“And then?””
Evelyn looked away.
“She told me not to let Daniel destroy your life.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because Daniel threatened us.””
My anger returned.
“How?””
She looked at Zoria.
“Not just us.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
“He knew about Zoria.””
My daughter froze.
“What?””
Evelyn reached for her hand.
“After Sarah died, Daniel told me that if I told you anything, he would make sure you lost everything.””
“What did he have on me?””
“Nothing.””
The answer came immediately.
“Then why would you believe him?””
“Because I was young.””
She looked ashamed.
“And because I was pregnant with Zoria.””
I looked at my daughter.
The pieces began moving.
“You were pregnant?””
“Yes.””
“When Sarah died?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I was terrified.””
I sat down.
My daughter.
My wife.
My brother.
All connected to a secret from before Zoria was even born.
“You let me believe Sarah died without telling me she knew the truth.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“You were protecting yourself.””
The words hurt.
But they were true.
Evelyn looked down.
“Yes.””
A long silence followed.
Then Zoria spoke.
“So Uncle Daniel has been controlling our family for twenty years?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody wanted to say it.
But the truth was already there.
“Yes,” I finally said.
My daughter looked at me.
“Why?””
I looked at the letter.
Because I finally understood something.
Daniel wasn’t just hiding a mistake.
He was protecting a story.
A story where he was the hero.
Where he saved people.
Where everyone owed him.
And the truth threatened that.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Daniel.
I opened it.
*I know Evelyn told you about Sarah.*
Another message followed.
*But she didn’t tell you why Sarah trusted her.*
I frowned.
Then another.
*Ask your wife what Sarah gave her before she died.*
I looked at Evelyn.
She saw my expression.
“What did he say?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I already knew.
“Evelyn.””
Her face changed.
“What?””
“What did Sarah give you?””
The silence was immediate.
Too immediate.
Zoria looked at her mother.
“Mom?””
Evelyn stood.
“I didn’t want this to happen.””
“What did she give you?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“A key.””
I stared.
“A key?””
She nodded.
“Sarah gave me a key to a safety deposit box.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What was inside?””
Evelyn looked toward the window.
Like she expected someone to be standing there.
Then she whispered:
“Evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
Her voice broke.
“Everything Daniel did.””
I stepped closer.
“Where is it?””
She didn’t answer.
“Evelyn.””
She looked at me.
And the fear in her eyes was different now.
Not fear of being caught.
Fear of what would happen if the truth came out.
“I don’t have it anymore.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“Daniel found out about it.””
“When?””
“Two weeks after Sarah died.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“But Michael…”
She looked at Zoria.
Then back at me.
“I don’t think Daniel wanted the evidence.””
I frowned.
“Then what did he want?””
Evelyn’s voice became barely audible.
“He wanted Sarah’s last message.””
I felt a chill.
“What message?””
She looked at the letter in my hand.
“The one she recorded before she died.””
I froze.
“Recorded?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She left a voice message.””
My breathing stopped.
“For who?””
She looked at me.
“For you.””
The room went silent.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
At first, there was only static.
Then a woman’s voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in twenty years.
A voice that should have been impossible.
“Michael…”
My entire body froze.
Zoria grabbed my arm.
“Dad?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because on the other end of the phone was Sarah.
May you like
And she whispered:
“If you’re hearing this… it means Daniel failed to erase the truth.””
