Chapter 9: The Brother Nobody Buried
I lowered the phone but didn't end the call.
Daniel stood beneath the oak tree, watching me with a strange mixture of sadness and resignation.
"Michael says you're not my father's brother," I said.
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Michael would say that.""
"Why?""
"Because he knows what he did.""
I tightened my grip on the cassette.
"Who are you?""
Daniel looked toward the grave.
"My name is Daniel Bennett. I was born Daniel Richard Bennett, just like your father. We shared a name, but we weren't brothers.""
"Then what were you?""
He looked at me.
"I was your father's business partner. And Vanessa's biological father.""
For a moment, I couldn't process the words.
Then everything inside me went cold.
"You're telling me you're Nia's grandfather?""
"Yes.""
"And the man who fathered her mother?""
Daniel nodded.
"Your father knew the truth. He knew Vanessa was my daughter. He also knew that when she became pregnant with Nia, the baby might be his.""
I stared at him.
"How?""
"Because Richard and Vanessa had a relationship.""
I shook my head.
"No. My father was in his late forties. Vanessa was barely twenty.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Your father didn't care about the age difference. He cared about control.""
I felt sick.
"Then why did you help him?""
Daniel looked away.
"I didn't know what he planned to do until it was too late. He told me he was arranging a temporary placement for the baby. He said Vanessa was struggling and that you were willing to give up your rights.""
"And you believed him?""
"I wanted to.""
The same answer again.
The same excuse.
I felt anger rising so quickly that I could barely speak.
"Did you know Vanessa believed Nia had died?""
Daniel nodded.
"She was told the baby had been transferred to another hospital after a medical emergency. When she tried to find her, the records had been altered.""
"Who altered them?""
"Michael.""
I closed my eyes.
My brother had been involved in every stage of this nightmare.
"Why?""
"Your father paid him. He was young, in debt, and desperate to prove himself. Richard promised him a position in the company if he helped.""
"And Claire?""
Daniel's expression darkened.
"Claire wanted you. She was afraid Vanessa would take you away. Richard offered her a solution: if Vanessa disappeared, you would marry Claire and the family would move on.""
I looked at the photograph in my hand.
My father had stood beside Vanessa while she held a baby carrier.
He'd looked calm.
Almost proud.
"Did you ever try to stop him?""
Daniel nodded.
"I confronted him. He threatened to expose my own past if I went to the police.""
"What past?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Richard and I had both been involved in the business when it was younger and less legitimate. There were things we did that could have sent us to prison. He had evidence.
I had evidence. We kept each other silent.""
I stared at him.
"So you let Vanessa suffer because you were afraid of prison?""
His face crumpled.
"Yes.""
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
"I spent twenty-two years trying to find her. When I finally learned she was alive, she wouldn't speak to me. She blamed me for what happened to her daughter.""
"She was right to blame you.""
"I know.""
He reached into his briefcase and pulled out another envelope.
"This is the original paternity report.""
I took it.
The paper was brittle, the ink faded. Two names appeared at the top: Arthur Bennett and Richard Bennett.
Below them were the results.
I read the numbers twice.
Then I looked up.
"What does this mean?""
"It means the first test was inconclusive because the samples were contaminated. Richard ordered a second test, but he never released the results.""
"Why?""
"Because the second test showed that he was almost certainly Nia's biological father.""
My stomach twisted.
"And the report involving Jordan?""
Daniel's expression changed.
"That report was different.""
"Explain.""
"Richard wanted to know whether Jordan was his biological son. He had reason to suspect the affair between Claire and him had resulted in a child.""
I felt my hands trembling.
"What did the test say?""
Daniel looked at me.
"It confirmed that Richard was Jordan's biological father.""
I closed my eyes.
For seventeen years, I'd loved a child who might not have shared my blood.
Now I was learning that my father might have been his biological father instead.
"Does Jordan know?""
"No.""
"Does Claire?""
"Yes.""
I opened my eyes.
"How can you be sure?""
"Because I was present when Richard told her.""
I stared at him.
"You were there?""
Daniel nodded.
"She begged him not to tell you. He promised he wouldn't, provided she helped keep Vanessa away from you.""
I felt a terrible, hollow ache in my chest.
"And Michael?""
"Richard told him, too. He wanted Michael to understand why the family had to remain silent.""
I looked down at the report.
The numbers blurred.
My father had hidden my daughter, interfered in my marriage, and potentially fathered my son.
He'd turned the people I loved into accomplices and left me to spend my life believing I was the reason my family had broken apart.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why are you telling me this now?""
"Because Richard is dead, Vanessa is dead, and the people who helped him are finally vulnerable.""
"That's not an answer.""
Daniel took a slow breath.
"Because Nia contacted me.""
I froze.
"What?""
"She found my number among Vanessa's papers. She called me after she discovered the DNA report.""
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She didn't trust anyone. She wanted to know whether I could explain the results.""
"And you told her?""
"I told her the truth about Richard.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Where is she now?""
"At the hospital.""
"Then why were you there?""
"Because I wanted to give her the documents.""
I stared at him.
"Why did you leave without speaking to me?""
"Because she told me Claire was still with you. She was afraid Claire would try to stop her.""
I looked at the cassette.
"What's on this tape?""
Daniel's face became grave.
"Richard's confession.""
I slipped the cassette into my pocket.
"Then we're going to listen to it.""
We drove to Michael's house.
He was waiting on the porch, his face pale and his hands trembling. When he saw Daniel, he stepped backward.
"You shouldn't be here.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Neither should you.""
Michael swallowed.
"Arthur, please. Let me explain before you believe anything he says.""
I held up the cassette.
"We're going to listen to this first.""
Inside, Jordan sat at the kitchen table with an unopened envelope in front of him.
He looked up when we entered.
"Dad?""
I walked over and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Are you okay?""
He nodded uncertainly.
"Uncle Michael says there's something about Grandpa I need to know.""
I looked at Michael.
"Tell him.""
Michael lowered his head.
"Your grandfather was involved with your mother before she married your father.""
Jordan stared at him.
"What?""
"He was your biological father.""
Jordan went completely still.
For several seconds, I thought he might faint.
Then he looked at me.
"Dad?""
I crouched beside his chair.
"Jordan, listen to me. Whatever the biology says, I raised you. I love you. Nothing changes that.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"But you aren't my biological father?""
I swallowed.
"I don't know what the final evidence will show. But I've been your father since the day you were born.""
Jordan covered his face.
"I don't know what to think.""
"You don't have to figure it out tonight.""
He nodded, though he still looked shattered.
Michael set up an old cassette player on the table.
Daniel handed me the tape.
I inserted it.
The recording began with static.
Then my father's voice filled the room.
"Vanessa, you need to understand that this is the only way.""
A woman's voice answered.
It was Vanessa.
"No. You need to understand that she's my daughter.""
My hands went numb.
My father's voice sharpened.
"She's also my granddaughter, and I won't let her destroy my family.""
"Your family?"" Vanessa cried.
"Arthur is the baby's father. He has a right to know.""
"Arthur will know nothing.""
"You're going to tell him that?""
"I'm going to tell him whatever is necessary.""
There was a sound like a chair scraping across the floor.
Then Vanessa spoke again, her voice shaking.
"What about the other baby?""
I looked at Daniel.
He'd gone pale.
My father's voice dropped.
"That child is already taken care of.""
Vanessa began to sob.
"You promised me you'd bring him back.""
"I promised nothing.""
"He's my son!""
The recording crackled.
Then my father said something that made every person in the room stop breathing.
"If you ever want to see your son again, you'll do exactly as I tell you.""
The tape continued for several seconds, filled with Vanessa's desperate pleas.
Then the recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Jordan stared at the cassette player.
"Who was the other baby?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Vanessa had a son before Nia. Richard arranged for him to be adopted.""
I looked at Michael.
"Where is he?""
Michael shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Daniel reached into his briefcase and removed a final document.
"Richard left instructions for finding him. The adoption was arranged through a private agency. The original records were sealed under a different name.""
He placed the document on the table.
At the bottom was a date, a case number, and a handwritten note.
The child was placed with the Bennett family.
I stared at the words.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel looked at Jordan.
"It means Vanessa's son may have been raised by someone in your own family.""
Jordan's face went white.
"Who?""
Daniel slowly turned the page.
There was a name.
A date of birth.
And a photograph of a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.
I recognized the blanket immediately.
It was the same blanket I'd bought for Nia before she was born.
The same one Vanessa had held in the photograph.
But the name on the document wasn't Nia's.
It was Michael's.
I looked up at my brother.
He was crying.
"Arthur," he whispered, "there's something I've never told you about my childhood.""
I felt my pulse hammering.
"What?""
Michael looked at the photograph.
May you like
Then he said the words that shattered the last piece of my certainty.
"I was adopted.""
