Chapter 10: The Daughter They Tried to Erase
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Claire stood in the hospital cafeteria, staring at the two photographs Daniel had placed on the table.
One showed her holding a newborn baby.
The other showed a second infant lying in a hospital bassinet.
Both bracelets carried the same name.
Isabella Bennett.
Twin A.
Twin B.
Claire slowly shook her head.
“No. That's impossible.””
Daniel took her hands.
“Mom, I know it's difficult to believe.””
“Your father told me I had one daughter.””
“He lied.””
“He told me Isabella died.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“He told me the same thing.””
Claire looked at the photographs again.
“Then who is Grace?””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I don't know.””
Hannah pulled out a chair.
“Daniel, we need to slow down. Where did you get these photographs?””
“From my grandfather's private archive.””
“Richard Whitmore?””
Daniel nodded.
“He kept everything. Hospital correspondence, payment records, photographs, legal documents. He believed he was protecting the family.””
Hannah looked at the second photograph.
“Why would the hospital give both babies the same name?””
“They weren't supposed to.””
Daniel opened the envelope again.
“There was a clerical error during the emergency delivery. My mother gave birth to twins, but one of the identification bracelets was printed incorrectly.””
Claire stared at him.
“Your mother?””
Daniel looked at her.
“You.””
She began crying.
He continued.
“Grandfather paid the hospital to keep the mistake quiet. He arranged for one baby to be transferred to a private medical facility. The other was supposed to remain with you.””
Claire covered her mouth.
“But they told me my daughter died.””
“Yes.””
“And you were taken away?””
Daniel nodded.
“I was the boy. I had a heart condition, so they sent me to a specialist clinic. Grandfather arranged for his wife to raise me.””
Hannah frowned.
“Then where did the other baby go?””
Daniel looked toward the neonatal unit.
“That's what we need to establish.””
Claire suddenly stood.
“Take me to my daughter.””
Hannah touched her arm.
“Claire, we need confirmation first.””
“I've waited three years. I'm not waiting another minute.””
Daniel took out his phone.
“I already contacted the hospital records department.””
Hannah looked at him.
“When?””
“An hour ago. They confirmed that two newborns were registered under the same maternal record.””
He showed her the screen.
There were two identification numbers.
One belonged to the baby born at 2:14 a.m.
The other belonged to a baby born four minutes later.
But the second record had been altered.
The original name had been removed.
In its place was a new identity.
*GRACE WHITMORE.*
Hannah felt her stomach tighten.
“So Savannah took one of the twins and raised her as her own.””
Daniel nodded.
“But that still doesn't explain the newborn.””
A voice interrupted them.
“Actually, it does.””
Detective Foster stood in the cafeteria doorway.
He was holding a thick folder.
“I've just received the original delivery records from St. Catherine's.””
He placed them on the table.
“The hospital has confirmed that Claire Bennett delivered twins three years ago. Both infants were alive at birth.””
Claire began shaking.
“Both?””
“Yes.””
The detective opened the folder.
“The first infant was transferred to a specialist unit. The second was placed under temporary guardianship.””
“Whose guardianship?”” Hannah asked.
The detective looked at the document.
“Savannah Whitmore.””
Claire closed her eyes.
Detective Foster continued.
“However, there's a problem. The baby transferred to the specialist unit was recorded under a male identity.””
Daniel nodded.
“That's me.””
The detective looked at him.
“Your medical records confirm that.””
He turned another page.
“But the second infant's original medical record lists a congenital abnormality near the left shoulder.””
Hannah immediately remembered the mark on the newborn.
The same location.
The same scar.
“That's the baby Savannah delivered yesterday.””
The detective nodded.
“Preliminary identification suggests that the newborn is the second twin.””
Claire began crying.
“My daughter.””
Detective Foster gently closed the folder.
“We'll arrange a DNA test immediately. Until the results are available, nobody should make assumptions about legal parentage.””
Claire nodded.
But Hannah noticed something else.
The detective hadn't mentioned Grace.
“What about the little girl in room 214?””
His expression changed.
“That's where things become complicated.””
He opened another section of the file.
“Grace's medical record was originally created under the name Isabella Bennett. However, several months later, another identification number was assigned to her.””
“Why?”” Hannah asked.
“The hospital received a request to correct the patient's identity.””
“Who requested it?””
The detective looked at the signature.
“Dr. Samuel Reeves.””
Hannah felt cold.
“Then he knew.””
“Apparently.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“There's something else.””
He reached into his jacket and produced a folded letter.
“My grandfather left this for me.””
The detective accepted it.
“Why didn't you give it to us earlier?””
“Because I only found it yesterday.””
He looked at Claire.
“I thought it was just another family letter.””
Detective Foster unfolded the paper.
It was handwritten.
The date was eighteen months earlier.
The first paragraph read:
Richard, if you are reading this, you must understand that I never intended for the children to suffer.
The detective continued reading.
Then his expression hardened.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
He looked at Hannah.
“Savannah wasn't the only person involved.””
Two hours later, the hospital's legal team arranged emergency DNA testing.
Samples were collected from Claire, Daniel, the newborn, and Grace.
Ethan arrived just before noon.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were red.
When he saw Daniel standing beside Claire, he stopped.
“Who is that?””
Daniel turned.
“I'm your half-brother.””
Ethan stared.
“My what?””
“Your father's son.””
Ethan looked toward Hannah.
“Is this some kind of joke?””
“No,” Hannah replied.
Daniel held out the birth certificate.
Ethan read it.
Then he looked at Claire.
“You're telling me my father had a child with you?””
Claire nodded.
“He had two.””
Ethan sat down.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he laughed bitterly.
“My father spent his entire life telling me that family was everything.””
Daniel looked at him.
“He didn't mean everyone.””
Ethan lowered his head.
“I'm sorry.””
Claire didn't respond.
She had no reason to comfort him.
A nurse entered.
“Mr. Whitmore?””
Ethan looked up.
“Yes?””
“Your wife is asking to see you.””
He stood.
“Is Savannah conscious?””
“Yes. She's been moved to a private room.””
Detective Foster immediately intervened.
“Mr. Whitmore, Mrs. Whitmore is still under investigation. Any conversation should take place with an officer present.””
Ethan nodded.
“Understood.””
Hannah watched him leave.
Then she turned toward Claire.
“Are you ready?””
Claire looked at the neonatal corridor.
“I've been ready for three years.””
Savannah was sitting upright in her hospital bed when Ethan entered.
Her hair was brushed.
Her face had been washed.
She looked almost like the woman who had hosted the Halloween party.
Only her eyes were different.
They were exhausted.
“You came,” she whispered.
Ethan remained near the door.
“Why did you do it?””
Savannah looked down.
“Do what?””
“Take Claire's children.””
She closed her eyes.
“Your father arranged it.””
“Stop blaming my father.””
“He wanted an heir.””
“And you wanted his money.””
Savannah looked up sharply.
“I wanted a family.””
“You had a family.””
“I had a husband who cared more about his father's approval than his wife.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Don't turn this into my fault.””
Savannah began crying.
“I was desperate.””
“For what?””
“For you to love me.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You pushed Grace into a swimming pool.””
Savannah's expression changed.
“I didn't mean for her to fall.””
“You pushed her.””
“She was getting too close!””
“She was standing beside you.””
Savannah turned toward the window.
“You don't understand what it's like.””
“Then explain it.””
She remained silent.
Ethan took a breath.
“Why did you tell me the newborn was dead?””
Savannah's fingers tightened around the blanket.
“Because Claire was going to expose everything.””
“Why did you take the baby?””
“Because the boy was the heir.””
“Daniel?””
She nodded.
“My father promised me control of the family trust if I protected the children.””
Ethan stared at her.
“And Grace?””
Savannah looked toward him.
“Grace was supposed to be my insurance.””
He frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Your father wanted the boy. But he also knew you wanted a daughter. He thought you would be easier to control if you believed you had a biological child.””
Ethan felt sick.
“So you gave me Grace.””
Savannah nodded.
“You loved her.””
“I still love her.””
“Then you should understand why I did it.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“No. I understand why you wanted a child. I don't understand why you destroyed another woman's life.””
Savannah wiped her cheeks.
“Because if I hadn't, your father would have destroyed mine.””
Ethan looked at her.
Then he asked the question he had avoided since the Halloween party.
“Why did you push Grace?””
Savannah looked away.
“I told you. She was too close to the pool.””
“No. Why?””
Her lips trembled.
“Because she was beginning to remember.””
Ethan froze.
“Remember what?””
Savannah looked at him.
“The hospital.””
“What about it?””
“She had started asking about another mother. She had been talking about a woman she called Claire.””
Ethan stepped backward.
“So you tried to kill her?””
“I wanted to frighten her.””
“You pushed a two-year-old into a swimming pool.””
Savannah began sobbing.
“I panicked.””
Ethan stared at her.
Then he quietly said:
“You're not the woman I thought I married.””
Savannah reached for him.
“Ethan, please.””
He stepped away.
“Don't.””
He walked out.
At 4:30 p.m., Detective Foster entered the family consultation room.
Everyone stood.
He held a sealed envelope.
“The preliminary DNA results are available.””
Claire clutched Daniel's hand.
Hannah held her breath.
The detective opened the envelope.
“The newborn delivered at the Whitmore residence is a biological child of Claire Bennett.””
Claire began crying.
“Isabella.””
The detective nodded.
“The probability of maternity is greater than 99.99 percent.””
Claire covered her face.
For three years, she had mourned a child who had never died.
Then the detective turned another page.
“Daniel's results also confirm that he is Claire's biological son.””
Daniel hugged his mother.
But Hannah noticed that the detective hadn't finished.
“What about Grace?”” she asked.
He looked at the report.
“That's the unexpected part.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“What?””
The detective held up another sheet.
“Grace is not biologically related to Claire.””
Claire's face fell.
“Then whose child is she?””
The detective looked toward Ethan.
“The DNA comparison shows that Grace is biologically related to Savannah's deceased mother.””
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Detective Foster took a breath.
“It means Savannah's mother was her biological grandmother.””
Hannah looked at the report.
“Then Grace is Savannah's biological daughter?””
The detective nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan slowly sat down.
Savannah had given birth to Grace.
She had hidden the pregnancy.
She had taken Claire's newborn daughter.
And she had raised both children under different identities.
But why?
Hannah looked at the detective.
“There's something we're still missing.””
He nodded.
“There's one final document. It was found inside Richard Whitmore's private safe.””
“What document?””
“A letter explaining the original arrangement.””
He placed it on the table.
The handwriting belonged to Richard Whitmore.
And the first line read:
I never intended for Savannah to keep either child. The twins were supposed to belong to my son Ethan.
Hannah began reading.
Then she reached the final paragraph.
Her blood ran cold.
But if Ethan ever discovers that Grace is actually Savannah's biological daughter, he must also learn the truth about the child Savannah gave birth to before their marriage.
Hannah looked up.
“Before their marriage?””
Detective Foster nodded.
“The records suggest Savannah had another child.””
Ethan stared at the letter.
“What child?””
The detective turned the page.
A name had been written beneath Richard's signature.
*LUCAS WHITMORE.*
Ethan's face went completely white.
“That's impossible.””
Hannah looked at him.
“Who is Lucas?””
Ethan swallowed.
“My younger brother.””
Daniel frowned.
“You have another brother?””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“He died when he was six months old.””
The detective closed the folder.
“According to these records, Lucas never died.””
And just as everyone began to understand that the Whitmore family had one more secret buried beneath its fortune, Hannah's phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of a young man standing outside the hospital.

Underneath it were eight words.
*I am Lucas. And I know what Savannah did.*
