Chapter 7: The Missing Piece of the Carter Family

Daniel read the final line of Arthur Carter’s letter three times.

Each time, the words felt heavier.

The only person who knows the truth is the one Evelyn forced away.

He lowered the paper slowly.

The room was silent.

Everyone was waiting.

Emily watched Daniel carefully.

She had seen him angry.

She had seen him hurt.

But she had never seen him look lost.

“Who is it?”” she asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

His eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“Mother.””

Evelyn remained still.

“Don’t.””

The single word made everyone look at her.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t open a door that should have stayed closed.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“That is exactly what you said the last time.””

Evelyn looked at her sharply.

“This does not involve you.””

Victoria smiled sadly.

“It always involved me.””

Daniel looked between them.

“I’m done being the last person to know.””

His voice filled the room.

“You spent my entire life deciding what I was allowed to understand.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You were controlling me.””

The words landed harder than anyone expected.

Because Daniel had spent his whole life defending his mother.

And now, for the first time, he wasn’t.

Thomas Reed slowly sat down.

The family lawyer looked older than he had that morning.

Like every secret he had carried had suddenly become too heavy.

Daniel turned toward him.

“You know who Arthur meant.””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Thomas glanced at Evelyn.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don’t get to decide anymore.””

Thomas sighed.

“Her name is Sarah Carter.””

The room went completely silent.

Daniel frowned.

“Who is Sarah?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victoria spoke.

“She was my sister.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

Victoria’s eyes lowered.

“Your father had another child.””

Emily felt a chill.

Another child.

Another person erased.

Another name hidden.

“How many secrets does this family have?”” she whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Sarah Carter had been born years before Daniel.

Before the company became what it was.

Before Evelyn became the woman everyone feared.

According to Thomas, Sarah was Arthur’s first child.

The child he loved most.

The child who knew him before success changed everything.

But Sarah disappeared from the Carter family records when she was seventeen.

Officially, she left the country.

Officially, she wanted nothing to do with the family.

But the documents told a different story.

Thomas opened a file from his briefcase.

“I kept these because Arthur asked me to.””

Daniel stared.

“You had them all this time?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

Thomas looked ashamed.

“Your father told me to wait until the right moment.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“The right moment?””

He looked around the room.

“Was the right moment supposed to be after another child was hurt?””

Nobody spoke.

Thomas opened the file.

Inside were old photographs.

Letters.

Legal documents.

Daniel picked up one photograph.

A teenage girl stood beside Arthur Carter.

She had Daniel’s eyes.

Same expression.

Same smile.

Daniel stared.

“She looks like him.””

Victoria nodded.

“She did.””

Emily watched Noah sitting quietly on the couch.

He was holding a small toy car.

A toy Daniel had given him earlier.

She wondered what was going through his mind.

A five-year-old boy had entered a mansion believing his grandmother didn’t want him.

Now he was discovering his family history was filled with people who had been pushed away.

Emily sat beside him.

“You okay?””

Noah nodded.

But she knew that answer.

The same answer children gave when they didn’t want adults to worry.

She touched his shoulder.

“You can ask anything.””

He looked at the adults across the room.

“Was Aunt Victoria not allowed here too?””

Emily looked at Victoria.

The woman’s eyes softened.

“No.””

“Why?””

Victoria knelt beside him.

“Because some people think families are about names.””

Noah tilted his head.

“What are they about?””

Victoria smiled.

“They’re about the people who choose to love you.””

Noah thought about that.

Then he quietly said:

“My mom chose me.””

Emily felt tears forming.

“Yes, I did.””

The search for Sarah began immediately.

Thomas contacted old connections.

Victoria checked records she had kept over the years.

Daniel searched through his father’s personal files.

And Emily stayed with Noah.

Because she knew something everyone else seemed to forget.

The truth mattered.

But so did the child standing in the middle of it.

Late that evening, Daniel found something hidden inside Arthur’s old documents.

A small envelope.

No label.

No date.

Only one word written on the front.

Sarah.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Not from Arthur.

From Evelyn.

Daniel read the first sentence.

Then his face changed.

Emily noticed.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He handed her the letter.

Emily read.

And immediately understood.

The letter was written twenty years earlier.

It was from Evelyn to Sarah.

And it contained one sentence that explained everything.

If you return to this family, I will make sure you lose everything you care about.

Emily looked up.

“This is a threat.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Victoria took the letter.

Her hands trembled.

“She threatened Sarah?””

Thomas looked away.

“I suspected.””

Daniel turned.

“You suspected?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know how far she would go.””

The anger in Daniel’s face was different now.

It wasn’t about Noah.

It wasn’t even about Victoria.

It was about realizing the person he trusted most had spent decades hurting people around him.

The next morning, Emily received a call.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?””

No response.

Then a woman spoke.

A quiet voice.

“Is this Emily?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“My name is Sarah Carter.””

Emily froze.

She looked at Daniel.

He immediately understood something had happened.

“Where are you?”” Emily asked.

The woman laughed softly.

A sad laugh.

“Somewhere Evelyn never thought I would return from.””

Emily stood.

“Sarah, we need to talk.””

“I know.””

“Why now?””

Silence.

Then Sarah said:

“Because Noah is in danger.””

Emily’s heart stopped.

“What?””

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“Who is this?””

Sarah immediately recognized his voice.

“Daniel?””

He froze.

Hearing his name from a stranger felt impossible.

“Who are you?””

A long silence followed.

Then:

“I’m your sister.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Sarah continued.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

Her voice became urgent.

“Your mother didn’t just hide us from the family.””

Emily felt a cold wave move through her.

“What did she do?””

Sarah whispered:

“She changed the trust.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

The lawyer’s face went pale.

Sarah continued.

“She didn’t remove us because she hated us.””

A pause.

“She removed us because she was afraid of what Arthur left behind.””

Daniel’s voice was barely audible.

“What did he leave?””

Sarah answered:

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

The line became quiet.

Then Sarah said:

“Proof that Evelyn was never the rightful controller of the Carter fortune.””

Everyone froze.

Emily looked at Daniel.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Because if Sarah was telling the truth…

then the entire foundation of Evelyn’s power was built on a lie.

But before anyone could ask another question, Sarah spoke again.

“Daniel, you have to find the original trust document.””

“We have copies.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“The real one.””

Daniel frowned.

“Where is it?””

Sarah hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Hidden in the one place Evelyn thought nobody would ever search.””

The call suddenly cut off.

Emily stared at the phone.

“Sarah?””

No answer.

Daniel looked toward his mother’s office upstairs.

And for the first time, he wondered if the place he had called home his entire life had been hiding the truth in plain sight.

Because somewhere inside that mansion was the original document.

The one Evelyn had spent decades trying to destroy.

And finding it would reveal exactly what she had done to her own family.
