Chapter 6: The Daughter Evelyn Tried to Forget

The entire mansion seemed to stop breathing.

Daniel stood frozen in the library doorway, staring at the name on his mother’s phone.

A name he had never heard before.

A name that had caused the color to disappear from Evelyn’s face.

“Who is she?”” Daniel asked again.

This time, his voice was different.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Afraid.

Evelyn slowly took the phone back.

“It’s nothing.””

Daniel almost laughed.

“Nothing?””

He pointed toward the window.

“A person you thought was gone just sent you a message, and you’re telling me it’s nothing?””

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at him.

For a moment, Daniel saw something he had never seen before.

Not control.

Not confidence.

Fear.

Real fear.

“She should not be here.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

The sound of the mansion doors opening echoed through the hall.

Someone had entered.

And whoever it was, they weren’t supposed to be there.

Daniel walked toward the entrance.

Evelyn followed slowly behind.

For the first time in his life, he noticed something strange.

His mother wasn’t walking like someone who owned the house.

She was walking like someone waiting for judgment.

The front doors opened.

A woman stood outside.

She looked to be in her early forties.

Dark hair.

Calm expression.

A folder in her hand.

She wasn’t angry.

That surprised Daniel.

He expected someone who had been hurt by Evelyn to arrive with rage.

Instead, she looked tired.

Like she had spent years carrying something heavy.

Her eyes moved past Daniel.

Then stopped on Evelyn.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

The silence that followed was painful.

Evelyn gripped the edge of the table behind her.

“You.””

The woman gave a small smile.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at him.

And for a moment, something changed in her expression.

Sadness.

Not hatred.

Sadness.

“My name is Victoria Carter.””

Daniel felt the name before he understood it.

Carter.

His family name.

“No.””

The word left his mouth quietly.

Victoria looked at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel turned toward Evelyn.

“Mother?””

Evelyn said nothing.

And that was the answer.

Victoria stepped into the mansion.

The same mansion where she had once lived.

The same halls where she had once believed she belonged.

She looked around.

“Everything still looks the same.””

Evelyn’s voice was cold.

“You have no right to be here.””

Victoria smiled slightly.

“That’s interesting.””

She held up the folder.

“Because twenty-five years ago, you said the same thing.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Twenty-five years?””

Victoria turned to him.

“You really don’t know.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“You never told him?””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“Leave.””

Victoria didn’t move.

“No.””

One word.

Simple.

Strong.

“I spent my entire life leaving because you told me I had no place here.””

Her eyes moved around the room.

“But today I’m done leaving.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Someone needs to explain what’s happening.””

Victoria looked at him.

“I’m your half-sister.””

The world seemed to go quiet.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“Your father was my father too.””

“No.””

His voice became softer.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Victoria reached into the folder.

She pulled out a document.

“DNA results.””

Daniel didn’t take it.

He just stared.

Evelyn looked away.

And that confirmed everything.

Later that morning, Emily arrived at the mansion with Noah.

She had originally planned to keep him away from more family conflict.

But when Daniel called and told her the truth was bigger than either of them imagined, she knew she needed to see it herself.

Noah held her hand as they walked through the front doors.

He looked nervous.

Emily noticed.

“You don’t have to talk to anyone you don’t want to.””

Noah nodded.

“Can we leave if I don’t like it?””

“Yes.””

“Promise?””

Emily squeezed his hand.

“Promise.””

That was all he needed.

Inside the library, Victoria turned when they entered.

Her eyes moved to Noah.

And something unexpected happened.

She smiled.

Not a polite smile.

A genuine one.

“Oh.””

She whispered.

Emily immediately became protective.

“Do you know my son?””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Then she looked at Noah again.

“But I know what it feels like to stand in this room and wonder if you belong.””

Noah didn’t understand the full meaning.

But he understood kindness.

And he didn’t step away.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“This is Victoria.””

Emily already knew from his expression.

“Your sister?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Apparently.””

Victoria looked at Evelyn.

“Tell them.””

Evelyn remained silent.

Victoria opened her folder.

“Or I will.””

She placed several documents on the table.

“The reason Noah was written into the trust before he was born is because Arthur Carter knew Evelyn would try to repeat history.””

Emily looked at her.

“Repeat what?””

Victoria answered.

“What she did to me.””

The story came out slowly.

Victoria was Daniel’s father’s daughter from a previous relationship.

When she was young, she lived with the Carter family.

She was loved by Arthur.

But Evelyn never accepted her.

Not because Victoria had done anything wrong.

Because Evelyn believed the Carter family should belong only to the people she chose.

When Arthur created the trust, he made sure Victoria would be protected.

But after his death, Evelyn challenged everything.

She claimed Victoria was not a true Carter.

She fought to remove her from the family records.

Eventually, Victoria left.

Not because she wanted to.

Because staying became impossible.

“She told everyone I was a mistake,” Victoria said quietly.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Did you?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

“Did you tell people she wasn’t family?””

Evelyn’s silence became confirmation.

Daniel stepped back.

The same words.

The same cruelty.

Different child.

Different generation.

But the same pattern.

Emily looked at Victoria.

“You came back because of Noah?””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why now?””

Victoria looked toward Noah.

“Because I saw what happened at the party.””

Emily froze.

“How?””

Victoria looked at Evelyn.

“She invited someone to record it.””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn’s face changed.

Daniel looked shocked.

“Mother?””

Victoria continued.

“She wanted proof that Noah was not accepted by the family.””

Emily felt cold.

“She wanted evidence?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Victoria reached into her folder.

She pulled out another document.

“The plan was to challenge Noah’s claim to the trust.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“You were going to take him to court?””

Evelyn’s expression remained firm.

“I was protecting the family.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Noah.

“You were protecting yourself.””

That afternoon, the family lawyer arrived.

His name was Thomas Reed.

He had worked with the Carters for thirty years.

When he entered the library and saw Victoria, he stopped.

“Victoria.””

She looked at him.

“Hello, Thomas.””

He looked uncomfortable.

Daniel noticed.

“You knew?””

Thomas sighed.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“How many people knew?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“More than you think.””

The betrayal spread deeper.

Daniel looked around the room.

His family.

His advisors.

People who had all known pieces of the truth.

And nobody had told him.

Emily noticed something on the table.

A smaller envelope.

Hidden beneath the trust documents.

She picked it up.

“Thomas.””

Everyone looked at her.

“This was under the trust papers.””

Thomas’s expression changed.

“What does it say?””

Emily opened it.

Inside was a letter.

A letter written by Arthur Carter.

But this one was not about Victoria.

Not about Noah.

It was addressed to Daniel.

Emily read the first line.

Then stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“What does it say?””

Emily slowly turned the page toward him.

The words were simple.

But they changed everything.

Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Evelyn failed to protect the family from the truth.

Daniel’s face went pale.

He continued reading.

There is one more person you must find.

Everyone waited.

Then Daniel reached the final sentence.

His hands began shaking.

Because the person Arthur wanted him to find was not Victoria.

Not Noah.

Someone else.

Someone who had been missing for years.

May you like

And according to Arthur’s letter…

that person was the only one who knew why Evelyn was willing to destroy her own family to keep the secret hidden.
