Chapter 6 - THE UNEXPECTED ALLIANCE

The following week brought rain—steady, gray rain that seemed to match my mood. Noah and I spent much of it indoors, reading and drawing and trying to pretend that outside our walls, life was not unraveling. But the world beyond our windows continued to press in.
Elena called one afternoon with news that turned my blood to ice. Vanessa had filed an emergency motion. She was asking for temporary visitation rights immediately. She claimed Noah was showing signs of emotional distress, and that I was isolating him from everyone who cared about him. A hearing had been scheduled in three days.
“She is rushing this,” Elena said grimly. “She wants a judge to see her as the concerned party and you as the obstacle before we can even present our evidence.”
“I will not send him to her,” I said. “I will not.”
“Then we fight. But Adrian… bring everything. The video. Your mother’s journal. Witness statements. Everything. We lay it all out, or we risk losing him right then and there.”
Two days before the hearing, there was a knock at my door. I grabbed the heavy flashlight I kept by the entry and peered through the peephole. Standing on my porch was a woman I had never seen before. She was about Vanessa’s age, with the same sharp cheekbones and dark eyes, but where Vanessa was always perfectly polished, this woman looked tired. Her hair was pulled back loosely, her coat plain, her face pale and drawn.
I opened the door cautiously, keeping the chain latched.
“Can I help you?”
She looked up, and I realized then that she shared more than a passing resemblance with Vanessa. “My name is Olivia. Olivia Sterling. I am Vanessa’s sister.”
I tightened my grip on the flashlight. “Your family has said quite enough already. I have no wish to speak with any of you.”
“I am not here on their behalf.” Her voice was quiet, strained. “Please. Let me in. If they see me speaking to you… they will never forgive me. I will only take a moment.”
I hesitated. It could be a trap. A trick. Something to use against me later. But there was no triumph in her face. Only fear. I closed the door just enough to undo the chain, then stepped back.
She entered quickly, wiping rain from her sleeves, and stood uncertainly in my hallway, glancing toward the living room where Noah lay on the sofa watching cartoons.
“He is beautiful,” she said softly. “He looks like you.”
“Why are you here?” I asked bluntly.
She turned to me, folding her hands tightly together. “Because what they are doing is wrong. All of it. Vanessa lying. Father threatening you. Erasing the tape. Pressuring the valet. It is all wrong.”
I stared at her. “You know about that?”
“I heard them. Father and Vanessa. Arguing in his study. She was terrified that you would expose her. She said if she lost her reputation… she would lose everything. The charity board. Her social standing. The engagement to that politician’s son—” She stopped, biting her lip.
My mind reeled. “Engagement to whom?”
“Vanessa… she was never fully committed to marrying you, Adrian. I am sorry to say it. She was using you to appear settled, to show everyone she was building a perfect family. But all along… she was negotiating something else. Someone wealthier. More powerful. And your son became the problem. Because he did not fit the image she needed to present.”
The betrayal hit me like a physical blow. I had given her my heart. My trust. I had invited her into Noah’s life. And she had looked at us and seen nothing but a stepping stone. A prop. Something to use until something better came along.
“So she locked him in the car,” I said, my voice hollow, “because he embarrassed her in front of the people she intended to impress?”
Olivia nodded slowly, tears glistening in her eyes. “She told Father that Noah was disturbed. That you were incapable. That removing him would be a kindness. But it was never about the boy. It was never about you. It was always about her image. She would destroy anyone to keep it polished.”
“And you are telling me this… why?”
“Because I have a child too, Adrian. A little girl. Three years old. And when I saw the way Vanessa looked at Noah… the coldness… I thought of my own baby. I realized that if I stayed silent… I was just as bad as they are. I cannot live with that.” She reached into her handbag and pulled out a thick manila envelope. “I brought these. Father’s private emails. Calendar entries. Records showing payments to the valet, to the newspaper columnist, to people he hoped would speak poorly of you. And… medical records.”
“Medical records?”
“Vanessa has been seeing a psychiatrist privately. Father paid the bills. She has deep-seated issues, Adrian. Rage. Obsessive perfectionism. An inability to cope when things do not go exactly her way. She has been like this since we were children. But Father always protected her. Smoothed things over. Paid people off. Until now.” She pressed the envelope into my hands. “This should help your attorney level the playing field.”
I held the envelope, scarcely breathing. “You are betraying your own family.”
“I am doing what is right.” She looked toward the living room, where Noah laughed softly at something on the screen. “Vanessa cannot care for that child. She does not have it in her heart. And Father… he does not care about truth. He cares about power. Please… use this to protect him. But be careful. Once they realize I spoke to you… they will turn on me. And they will come after you with everything they have left.”
“They will hurt you?”
She gave a sad, knowing smile. “I am already prepared. I am leaving tonight. Taking my daughter to stay with family out of state. They will not find us. But Adrian… listen to me. There is something else. Something in the emails. Vanessa is not acting alone in all of this. There is someone else advising her. Someone who knows the law better than anyone should. Someone who told her exactly how to twist every fact against you.”
“Who?”
Olivia stepped close, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Your own attorney. The one you hired before Elena.”
The floor seemed to tilt beneath me. “That is impossible. I fired him weeks ago.”
“Apparently… he still works for your fiancée. And he has been feeding her everything you told him in confidence. Every fear. Every mistake. Every strategy. She knows everything you plan to do, before you even do it.”
I gripped the table to steady myself. Every private conversation. Every worry I had shared. Every weakness I had confessed. Delivered straight into Vanessa’s hands. I had been fighting a war while my own maps were being handed to the enemy.
Olivia reached into her purse one last time and pulled out a folded slip of paper. “Names. Numbers. People who will speak to Elena if she promises them protection. And Adrian… Vanessa intends to testify that Noah told her he did not want to live with you. That you frightened him. She has been practicing what to say.”
“Why are you risking everything for us?”
She looked at me, her dark eyes glistening. “Because I once looked to Vanessa for guidance. And she turned on me too, when I disappointed her. I know exactly what she is capable of. And I know that you love your son more than anything in this world. That is enough for me.”
Before I could speak, she turned and walked quickly to the door. She paused on the threshold, glancing back one last time.
“Win, Adrian. For all of us.”
Then she was gone, vanishing into the gray rain, leaving me standing alone in the hallway holding an envelope full of secrets that could destroy them all. I looked down at the papers in my hands. The lies. The bribery. The betrayal. And the terrifying realization that the person I had trusted to defend me had been the one undermining me all along.
I walked slowly to the living room and looked in on Noah. He was humming quietly to himself, completely unaware that a war was being fought in his name, that strangers had risked everything to help us, and that the woman who wanted him had spies everywhere—even in places I had believed safest.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Elena. When she answered, my voice shook.
“Elena… we have a traitor. And we have proof. But you need to see this. Immediately.”
