Chapter 11 - THE AFTERMATH AND THE HUNT

In the days following the hearing, everything moved at once. The district attorney took possession of the recorder and the full chain of evidence. A formal criminal investigation opened. Vanessa’s attorneys filed motion after motion—trying to suppress the recording, challenging Noah’s competency, demanding an immediate psychological evaluation of me—each one more desperate than the last. But the tape was clear. Her voice unmistakable. Her threats unambiguous.
And then… she vanished.
One morning, news broke that Vanessa had left the state. No forwarding address. No flight records under her own name. Her bank activity went dark. She had simply disappeared, taking her passport, jewelry, and a substantial amount of cash withdrawn quietly in the weeks before. Her father claimed he had no idea where she had gone. No one believed him.
Elena called me with the update, her voice tight with concern.
“She didn’t just leave, Adrian. She ran. Which means she knows how serious this is. And people who run… eventually come back to settle things.”
“Is she a fugitive?”
“Not yet. But once charges are formally filed… yes. Every law enforcement agency in the country will be looking for her. Until then… stay alert. Lock your doors. Change your routines. Take different routes to pick up supplies. She has every reason to blame you for everything she has lost. And she knows exactly where to strike.”
I took her warning seriously. I moved us again—this time to a completely different apartment complex, under a simplified version of my name, unlisted in any directory. I kept Noah home from school for the time being. We communicated only through encrypted channels. I checked the street before leaving. I varied my schedule. I looked in every car window. Over my shoulder. At every stranger who lingered too long near our door.
Life became a waiting game. And as the days stretched into weeks, the waiting began to feel heavier than the fear.
Noah handled it better than I expected. He understood we were hiding. He understood why. He did not complain. Instead, he grew quieter, more observant, more careful. He watched the door whenever there was a sound. He memorized the license plates of cars parked nearby. He was six years old acting like a bodyguard. It broke my heart.
“She will not find us, will she?” he asked one evening, sitting beside me on the sofa.
“She will not,” I told him. “And even if she tries… I will never let her near you.”
But privately, I worried. Vanessa knew my habits. She knew my history. She knew the names of my friends and where my mother had once lived. She knew the places I went when I was stressed. If she was watching—patient, waiting, biding her time until the investigation slowed—she could strike when I least expected.
And then Olivia called.
It was late. Her voice came through the line breathless, distorted, as if she were calling from a bad connection.
“Adrian… she reached out to me.”
My stomach dropped. “Vanessa?”
“She knows where I am. She sent a message. She says… she says you have something of hers. And she will trade me… for the recorder. And all copies.”
I stood up slowly. “She wants to exchange you? Or someone else?”
There was silence on the other end. Then Olivia whispered, “She said she has Noah. But Adrian… she doesn’t, right? He is safe with you?”
My blood turned to ice. I looked wildly around the apartment. Noah was in the next room. Reading. Safe. Thank God. But if Vanessa was lying to Olivia… what else was she planning?
“Noah is here, Olivia. With me. Safe. She is bluffing.”
“Then she is coming for him,” Olivia said, her voice trembling. “She told me exactly what she intends to do. She said she will take him where no court can reach her. Raise him as her own. Tell him you abandoned him. And she said… if you stand in her way… she will make good on every word on that recording.”
“Where is she, Olivia?”
“I do not know! She called from a burner number. She said she is already close. She said she knows you are hiding. But she also knows you will make mistakes. Because you are a father… and fathers have weaknesses.”
I ended the call and rushed to lock every window, every deadbolt, every possible entrance. I texted Elena immediately. Vanessa is nearby. She is threatening to take Noah. Be ready.
Then I stood in the hallway, listening to the quiet of the apartment, watching the shadows stretch across the floor. She was close. Somewhere. Watching. Waiting for one careless moment. One unlocked door. One second I turned my back.
And then my phone buzzed. An unknown number. A single text.

I stared at the words until they blurred. She was not running. She was hunting. And she was hunting me.
