Chapter 9: The Truth Hidden Inside Noah
The message remained on my phone screen.
*YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES TO GIVE US THE BOY.*
For a moment, my mind stopped working.
Not because I didn’t understand the threat.
Because I did.
Someone was outside our home.
Someone knew where Noah was.
Someone believed they could walk into my life after nine years of silence and take my son away.
But they had made one mistake.
They thought I was still the man who didn’t know who he was.
They thought I was still the man who could be controlled by secrets.
They were wrong.
I put my phone in my pocket.
“Noah.””
He looked up at me.
His face was pale.
“Are they here for me?””
Every instinct in my body screamed to lie.
To say no.
To tell him everything was okay.
But I had spent the entire day watching adults protect children with lies.
I wasn’t going to become another person who made Noah afraid of the truth.
“Yes.””
His eyes filled with fear.
“But they’re not getting you.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“We need to hide him.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He stared toward the window.
“If they came here, they already know every place we would think to hide him.””
I hated that he was right.
“What do you suggest?””
Marcus looked at me.
And for the first time, he wasn’t looking at me like an opponent.
He was looking at me like his son.
“We stop running.””
A sound came from outside.
A car engine.
Then another.
They were surrounding the house.
Vanessa grabbed Noah’s shoulders.
“Noah, listen to me.””
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
The words surprised all of us.
She touched his face gently.
“I spent so long trying to protect you that I forgot the most important thing.””
Her voice cracked.
“You deserved the truth.””
Noah didn’t answer.
But he didn’t pull away.
That was the first sign that maybe, someday, he could forgive her.
Not today.
But someday.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
*THREE MINUTES.*
Marcus looked at the recording device.
“The file.””
I turned.
“What?””
“The thing Daniel hid.””
“You said it was a file.””
“It is.””
“Where?””
Marcus looked at Noah.
Everyone went silent.
Noah slowly backed away.
“Why are you looking at me?””
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
Marcus sighed.
“Daniel knew everyone would search for it.””
“What did he do?””
“He hid it where nobody would think to look.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where?””
Marcus looked at the recording device.
Then at Noah.
“Inside the only person he trusted.””
I felt cold.
“No.””
Marcus nodded.
“Daniel knew if he left evidence somewhere physical, Marcus’s enemies would find it.””
He looked at himself.
“I mean me.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“He knew I would search everywhere.””
I stared at the device.
“You’re saying…”
“Yes.””
“The file is inside Noah?””
Nobody spoke.
Noah looked terrified.
“I don’t understand.””
Vanessa immediately moved toward him.
“What did Daniel do?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“When Noah was born, Daniel left a message with instructions.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Instructions for what?””
“For the future.””
He looked at Noah.
“Daniel knew his son might grow up without him.””
Noah’s eyes filled.
“He planned for that?””
Marcus nodded.
“He wanted Noah to know the truth when he was old enough.””
A strange sadness filled the room.
Even Marcus looked affected.
“He created a hidden storage device.””
“Inside Noah?””
“Not literally.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Inside something Noah would always have.””
I looked at the recording device.
Then I noticed something.
A small marking.
Something I had ignored before.
A symbol.
The same symbol engraved on the back of the photograph.
My fingers moved over it.
“This.””
Marcus nodded.
“Daniel’s symbol.””
“What does it mean?””
“It means family.””
A loud bang came from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
The front door shook.
They weren’t asking anymore.
They were coming in.
Marcus looked at me.
“We’re out of time.””
I turned to Noah.
“Where did you get the recording device?””
He swallowed.
“Mom’s drawer.””
“Was it always there?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Think carefully.””
He closed his eyes.
Then:
“Grandpa Marcus put it there.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Marcus looked shocked.
“What?””
Noah continued.
“Not today.””
His voice trembled.
“Years ago.””
Marcus frowned.
“How would you know?””
“Because I saw it.””
“When?””
Noah looked down.
“When I was little.””
The room went silent.
“I remember waking up one night.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I saw someone in the hallway.””
My heart started racing.
“Who?””
Noah looked at Marcus.
“I thought it was Grandpa.””
Marcus went still.
“What did he do?””
Noah hugged himself.
“He was crying.””
That shocked everyone.
Marcus looked away.
“He was holding something.””
“What?””
“A picture.””
My breathing slowed.
“What picture?””
Noah looked at me.
“Your picture.””
The room went silent.
Then the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And went out.
A second later, the security alarm screamed.
Someone had entered.
I grabbed Noah’s hand.
“Stay behind me.””
We moved toward the hallway.
Vanessa followed.
Marcus stayed near the kitchen.
A shadow crossed the wall.
Then a voice called from the darkness.
“Ethan.””
My blood ran cold.
Nobody had called me that in years.
Not even me.
The person stepped into the light.
A woman.
Late forties.
Calm.
Confident.
Holding a folder.
Claire.
No.
Not Claire.
Someone else.
Someone wearing Claire’s face.
Because I had never met Claire in person.
Only heard her voice.
The woman smiled.
“You finally remembered.””
I stared at her.
“Who are you?””
She looked at Marcus.
“Tell him.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
The woman smiled.
“I’m the reason Daniel died.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.””
The woman tilted her head.
“You still blame yourself.””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“You were there.””
The woman smiled.
“Of course I was.””
My hand tightened around Noah’s.
“Who are you?””
She looked at me.
Then at Noah.
“My name is Claire Bennett.””
I froze.
The real Claire.
The attorney.
The person who had called me.
She was here.
But something was wrong.
“You lied to me.””
She shrugged.
“I needed you to come out of hiding.””
“Why?””
She looked at Noah.
“Because Daniel’s file is worth more than all of you combined.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You were working with him.””
Claire smiled.
“Finally.””
She looked at me.
“Your father understands.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Father?””
Claire laughed softly.
“After all these years, you still don’t know.””
The floor seemed to disappear.
“What?””
She opened the folder.
Inside was a document.
She held it up.
“The truth is simple.””
She smiled.
“You were never the heir.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“What did you do?””
Claire looked at Noah.
“He was.””
I stared.
“What?””
She pointed at my son.
“Daniel transferred everything to Noah.””
My heart pounded.
“But you said—”
“I said you were protecting him.””
She stepped closer.
“You were just the lock.””
I felt cold.
“The lock?””
She smiled.
“The final piece Daniel needed.””
She held up another document.
“Because the file isn’t hidden inside Noah.””
A pause.
“It’s hidden inside the person who raised him.””
My breathing stopped.
I looked at my hands.
My memories.
My accident.
My forgotten past.
Claire smiled.
“Daniel didn’t erase your memories.””
The room went silent.
“Someone else did.””
I stared at her.
“Who?””
She looked directly at Marcus.
Then whispered:
“The same person who has been protecting you all along.””
Marcus looked at me.
And for the first time...
I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
Because he knew what she was about to reveal.
The truth wasn’t hidden in Noah.
It wasn’t hidden in Daniel’s files.
It was hidden inside me.
And the person who had stolen my memories…
May you like
was standing only a few feet away.
My father.
