Chapter 5: The Girl Who Walked Into the Lion's Den
At 7:42 the next morning, I stood outside the Grand Hall wearing a simple navy dress I had borrowed from a neighbor.
It wasn't fashionable.
The hem was slightly uneven, and the sleeves were too long.
But it was clean, comfortable, and mine to wear.
I carried my folder in one hand and my mother's portfolio in the other.
Through the glass doors, I could see event staff arranging flowers, adjusting spotlights, and setting up a long runway beneath a ceiling of crystal chandeliers.
A banner stretched across the entrance.
*YOUNG CREATORS SHOWCASE — ORIGINALITY, CRAFT, VISION.*
My stomach tightened.
I had spent months imagining what it would feel like to show my work in a place like this.
I hadn't imagined arriving under suspicion.
A security guard stepped forward.
"Name?""
"Nia Carter. I'm here for the ownership review.""
He checked a tablet.
His expression changed.
"You're the subject of the complaint?""
"Apparently.""
"Wait here.""
He disappeared through a side door.
I watched guests arrive in elegant coats and polished shoes. Some carried garment bags. Others walked beside parents who adjusted their collars and reminded them to smile.
I recognized several girls from Brianna's school.
One of them pointed at me.
"That's her.""
Another whispered something.
Then both looked away.
A few minutes later, the security guard returned with a woman wearing a black blazer and a silver identification badge.
"I'm Rachel Morgan, the event coordinator. Please come with me.""
She led me into a conference room behind the stage.
Brianna was already there.
She wore my dress.
The colorful train spilled across the floor behind her, catching the overhead lights. Her hair had been arranged in a sleek updo, and delicate gold earrings framed her face.
Vanessa stood beside her, holding a folder.
Dad sat at the far end of the table.
When he saw me, he looked down.
Brianna smiled.
"Well, you actually came.""
I placed my portfolio on the table.
"Of course.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Rachel, we have already explained that this girl is attempting to damage Brianna's reputation.""
Rachel remained calm.
"That's why we're reviewing the evidence before the event begins.""
Brianna lifted her chin.
"I designed this gown. Nia has always copied my ideas.""
I stared at her.
"Name one.""
She blinked.
"What?""
"Name one design of mine you saw before I created this dress. Tell them what you contributed.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Don't interrogate my daughter.""
Rachel raised a hand.
"Let Brianna answer.""
Brianna looked at her mother.
Then she turned back to me.
"I helped choose the colors.""
"When?""
"During the design process.""
"Which day?""
She hesitated.
"I don't remember.""
"Did you choose the sculpted shoulders?""
"No.""
"The asymmetrical sleeves?""
She pressed her lips together.
"The train?""
"No, but—"
"Did you sew any part of it?""
Brianna's cheeks flushed.
"I don't have to sew something to design it.""
"That's true," I said.
"But you do have to create the design you're claiming as yours.""
Rachel opened her notebook.
"Let's examine the evidence.""
I laid out the photographs in chronological order.
The first showed my original white gown, nearly complete.
The second showed the paint stains.
The third showed my early sketches for the redesigned dress.
The fourth showed me stitching the sculpted shoulders.
The final photograph showed the finished gown hanging in my bedroom.
Rachel studied the timestamps.
"These images were taken over several weeks.""
"Yes.""
Vanessa leaned forward.
"Photographs can be manipulated.""
"They can," Rachel replied.
"That's why we also requested the original files.""
I handed over a USB drive containing the unedited photographs and video clips from my phone.
One video showed the sewing machine running while I stitched the gown's train. My voice could be heard explaining the design to myself as I worked.
Rachel watched part of it.
Then she looked at Brianna.
"Do you have comparable documentation showing your design process?""
Brianna's face went pale.
Vanessa opened her folder.
"We have sketches.""
She slid several pages across the table.
I recognized the drawings immediately.
They were copies of my original sketches.
The proportions were slightly wrong, and the details were simplified, but the designs were unmistakably mine.
I stared at them.
"Where did you get these?""
Brianna crossed her arms.
"I drew them.""
"Those are my sketches.""
"No, they're not.""
I pointed to the corner of the first page.
"Look at the notation.""
Rachel leaned closer.
A tiny handwritten note sat beside the sleeve design: Shift seam two centimeters to preserve movement.
I had written it weeks earlier.
The same note appeared in my sketchbook.
Rachel compared the pages.
"These are remarkably similar.""
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"Fashion designers use common techniques. That doesn't prove anything.""
"Then why did Brianna submit these as her original sketches?"" I asked.
Brianna shot me a furious look.
"Because they are mine!""
Rachel raised her hand again.
"Please. We will review the material carefully.""
She turned to the next page.
There, in the lower corner, was another detail.
A faint pencil mark.
My mother's initials.
E.C.
I had copied that little signature mark from the sewing patterns she used when I was a child. I placed it on my designs as a private tribute.
Brianna had copied it too.
Rachel looked up.
"Who is E.C.?""
"My mother," I answered.
"Elena Carter.""
Evelyn entered the room at that moment.
"Elena was a respected designer," she said.
"And Nia has been preserving her mother's methods and sketches for years.""
Vanessa stood.
"That doesn't mean Nia created this gown.""
"No," Evelyn agreed.
"The dated evidence does.""
Brianna's hands began to shake.
She looked toward Dad.
"Say something!""
He stared at the table.
"Dad!""
He finally lifted his head.
"Nia, perhaps we can resolve this privately.""
I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.
"Privately? You mean like when you asked me to sign a false statement yesterday?""
Rachel looked at him.
"Did you ask Nia to sign a statement acknowledging Brianna as a co-creator?""
Dad's face tightened.
"I wanted to avoid a public dispute.""
"That wasn't my question.""
He swallowed.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Marcus!""
He looked at her, then at me.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that the room was no longer his to control.
Rachel closed her notebook.
"The evidence strongly supports Nia's claim of authorship. However, the final decision must follow the showcase's formal procedures.""
Brianna shot to her feet.
"So you're letting her steal my opportunity?""
"No one is stealing anything from you," Rachel replied.
"We're investigating a complaint.""
Brianna pointed at me.
"She did this because she's jealous!""
I stood.
"You ruined my original dress. You took the redesigned gown. You posted it online and claimed you created it. And now you've copied my sketches to make your lie look real.""
My voice shook, but I didn't stop.
"You had every opportunity to tell the truth. You could have apologized. You could have returned the dress. You could have entered the competition with something you actually created.""
Brianna's eyes filled with tears.
Then she said something that made the room go cold.
"Fine. I didn't design every part of it. But I deserve to win more than she does.""
Rachel's expression hardened.
"Why?""
Brianna looked around as though the answer should have been obvious.
"Because I have a future to protect!""
I stared at her.
"So do I.""
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then Rachel asked Brianna to step outside while the panel reviewed the documentation.
Vanessa grabbed her daughter's arm.
"This is ridiculous.""
Evelyn remained seated.
"No, Vanessa. What's ridiculous is believing that another person's talent belongs to you simply because you can afford to take it.""
Vanessa's face turned red.
"You have no idea what this family has sacrificed.""
Evelyn's voice stayed calm.
"I know exactly what Elena sacrificed. She worked nights to save money for her daughter's education. She created a legal structure to protect that money. And someone appears to have disregarded those protections.""
Vanessa went completely still.
Dad looked up sharply.
"Evelyn, that's enough.""
"No," I said.
Everyone turned toward me.
"I want to know what happened to my mother's money.""
Rachel glanced between us.
"That matter is outside the scope of the design review.""
"Then it can be handled separately. But I'm done pretending it doesn't exist.""
I gathered the documents.
Evelyn placed a hand on my shoulder.
"One thing at a time, Nia.""
I nodded.
Rachel escorted Vanessa and Brianna into the hallway.
Dad remained in the room.
He stared at the gown, then at the photographs.
Finally, he whispered, "I never thought it would come to this.""
I looked at him.
"What did you think would happen?""
He opened his mouth.
No answer came.
Before I could speak again, Rachel returned.
"The panel has reached an initial decision. Brianna's entry is suspended pending a full review. Nia's authorship claim will be formally recorded, and she may present her evidence to the judges.""
Brianna's voice rang out from the hallway.
"YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME!""
A chair scraped against the wall.
Then the door flew open.
Brianna stormed inside, still wearing my dress.
She grabbed the train and lifted it.
"You want to know what really happened?"" she shouted.
Vanessa rushed after her.
"Brianna, stop!""
But Brianna was already looking at me.
"Fine. I'll tell you who actually came up with the idea for the colors.""
She pointed at my mother's initials on the sketch.
Then she said the words that made Evelyn stand abruptly.
"Your mother didn't design this alone. She stole the original concept from someone else.""
Evelyn's face went white.
And Dad whispered, "Brianna, you have no idea what you're saying.""
May you like
But Brianna smiled.
Because she believed she had finally found a way to destroy me.
