Chapter 8: The Contract Nobody Was Supposed to See
We reached my father's house forty minutes later.
A black sedan was parked in the driveway. Inside the living room, Vanessa sat beside a woman in a navy suit, while a man with a leather briefcase stood near the fireplace.
Dad was pacing beside the windows.
When he saw me, relief crossed his face.
Then he looked at Adrian.
His expression hardened.
"I asked Nia to come home. I didn't invite you.""
Adrian removed his gloves.
"Neither did Elena invite you to destroy her future, Marcus. Yet here we are.""
Dad flinched.
Vanessa rose from the sofa.
"This is exactly what I warned you about. Adrian Vale has spent years manipulating people with money and influence. Now he's using Nia to reopen a case that was settled seventeen years ago.""
I looked at the woman in the navy suit.
"Who are you?""
She stood.
"Rachel Morgan. I'm legal counsel for the Bellamy Institute. We're here because a document has surfaced that may affect the ownership of the Phoenix design.""
"The dress I created?""
Rachel opened her briefcase and removed a photocopy.
"This document appears to show that Elena Carter assigned the rights to her original Phoenix design to Vanessa Whitmore.""
I looked at the signature.
It resembled my mother's handwriting.
But something was wrong.
The letters were too angular. The signature leaned in the opposite direction from the one on her letters. Even the spacing looked unnatural.
"That's a forgery," I said.
Vanessa laughed sharply.
"Of course you'd say that.""
I took the photocopy from Rachel.
"Where did this come from?""
"The institute's archived legal files," Rachel replied.
"The original was recovered this morning.""
"By whom?""
She hesitated.
"Mrs. Carter brought it to our attention.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"You found this document just after I discovered Mom's letters?""
"Coincidence.""
"That's convenient.""
Vanessa's face reddened.
"Watch your tone.""
Adrian stepped between us.
"Ms. Morgan, has the document been examined by an independent forensic specialist?""
"Not yet.""
"Then it has no established authenticity.""
Rachel closed her briefcase.
"We're not claiming the document is conclusive. We're asking that all parties preserve relevant records while the institute conducts its review.""
"Then why are you here presenting it as evidence against Elena?"" Adrian asked.
Rachel's expression tightened.
"Because Mrs. Carter has threatened legal action if the institute fails to acknowledge her claim.""
"She can make whatever claim she wants. She cannot turn an unverified signature into proof.""
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"You think your money makes you untouchable, Adrian?""
"No," he replied.
"I think evidence should be examined before reputations are destroyed.""
Dad finally spoke.
"Enough.""
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked at the document in my hands.
"That contract is false.""
Vanessa went completely still.
Rachel frowned.
"Mr. Carter, are you certain?""
"I am.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Marcus, don't.""
He looked at her.
"You told me this was over.""
"It is over.""
"No," he said quietly.
"It isn't.""
He turned toward me.
"I need to show you something.""
Dad led us into his study.
The room was lined with bookshelves and framed photographs. A heavy wooden desk stood near the window, its surface covered with neatly arranged papers.
He opened the bottom drawer and removed a small metal box.
"I kept this because I couldn't bring myself to destroy it.""
He placed the box on the desk.
Inside was a leather folder, its corners worn and its clasp rusted.
My heart hammered.
"The second ledger?"" I asked.
Dad nodded.
"Your mother gave it to me shortly before she died. She asked me to keep it safe until you were old enough to understand what it meant.""
I stared at him.
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was ashamed.""
He opened the folder.
Inside lay a thick ledger filled with handwritten sketches, design notes, dates, and signatures.
Several pages had been marked with red tabs.
The first showed my mother's original design for the Phoenix collection.
The second showed Vanessa's alleged version.
The dates were unmistakable.
My mother's sketch came first.
Three weeks earlier.
I turned the page.
A series of notes documented the development of the design, including fabric experiments and structural changes.
Each entry was signed by Elena Carter.
The next page contained a photograph of the original gown, taken in Bellamy's design studio.
Beneath it was a note.
October 19, 2009. Final prototype completed by Elena Carter.
I looked up.
"This proves she made it first.""
Dad nodded.
"Yes.""
Adrian leaned over the desk.
"Why did you keep this hidden?""
Dad's face twisted with shame.
"Because I thought Vanessa's accusation would destroy Elena completely. By the time I realized how far she had gone, the institute had already suspended her. I believed that if I produced the ledger, I would have to admit that I had signed the original report without reading it.""
"So you let Mom carry the blame," I whispered.
He bowed his head.
"Yes.""
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I turned another page.
There was a copy of the contract Rachel had shown us.
But this version was different.
The signature line was blank.
A handwritten note appeared in the margin.
Assignment refused. Design remains the intellectual property of Elena Carter.
The note was dated October 28, 2009.
My mother had rejected the transfer.
The forged document claimed she had signed it three days later.
I looked at Dad.
"Who made the fake?""
He hesitated.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa appeared in the doorway.
"You know perfectly well.""
Dad closed his eyes.
She stepped into the room, her heels striking the floor with deliberate precision.
"You promised you would never show that ledger to anyone.""
"I promised Elena I'd protect it.""
"And you failed her.""
The words landed hard.
For a moment, Vanessa looked almost triumphant.
Then Dad lifted his head.
"Yes. I did. And I'm not going to fail her again.""
Vanessa's face changed.
"You have no idea what you've just done.""
"I've told the truth.""
"No. You've destroyed your family.""
I looked at her.
"You destroyed it when you stole Mom's work.""
Vanessa turned on me.
"Your mother was not some innocent victim. She wanted Adrian, the scholarship, the recognition, everything. She had a way of making people believe she was the only person in the room who mattered.""
"Because she was talented?""
"Because she knew how to make people feel sorry for her!""
Adrian's voice cut through the room.
"Vanessa, stop.""
She spun toward him.
"You have no right to judge me.""
"I have every right to demand an explanation.""
"You weren't there when the board questioned her. You didn't see the evidence. You didn't hear what she admitted.""
"What did she admit?"" I asked.
Vanessa's mouth closed.
I stepped closer.
"You said Mom confessed to stealing your designs. What exactly did she say?""
Vanessa looked at Dad.
He shook his head.
"Don't," he said.
She laughed bitterly.
"Fine. You want the truth? Elena admitted that some of the designs were similar. She said she had looked at my sketches and incorporated elements into her collection.""
"Because you were working together," I said.
"She said she had borrowed ideas.""
"That isn't the same as stealing.""
"To the board, it was.""
Adrian placed a hand on the ledger.
"Then why did you submit your sketches after hers?""
Vanessa's face went white.
Rachel stepped forward.
"Mrs. Carter, I think we should pause this conversation.""
"No!"" Vanessa snapped.
"I'm tired of everyone pretending Elena was perfect!""
Nobody spoke.
Then she turned toward me.
"You want to know why I hated that dress? Because the moment I saw it, I saw her again. The way people looked at her.
The way Adrian looked at her. The way Marcus followed her around like a dog.""
Dad stared at her in disbelief.
"You told me you admired her.""
"I did admire her!"" Vanessa shouted.
"Until I realized that no matter what I did, she would always be better.""
The confession hung in the air.
For the first time, Vanessa had said something honest.
Not about the evidence.
Not about the institute.
About herself.
I looked at the ledger.
"You could have become a designer in your own right.""
She laughed without humor.
"Not with her standing beside me.""
"So you decided to destroy her.""
"I decided to protect what was mine.""
"You took something that wasn't yours.""
Her eyes flashed.
"You have no idea what I sacrificed.""
I shook my head.
"No. But I know what Mom sacrificed.""
Vanessa looked away.
For a moment, I thought she might finally break.
Then her expression hardened again.
She reached into her handbag and removed her phone.
"I think everyone should see this.""
She pressed play.
A recording filled the room.
My mother's voice emerged from the speaker, soft and tired.
"I can't keep doing this, Vanessa. I won't sign anything. The designs are mine.""
A second voice answered.
Vanessa's.
"Then you'll lose everything.""
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Rachel looked shaken.
"Where did you get that?""
Vanessa held up her phone.
"From the original Bellamy archive.""
Adrian stared at her.
"That recording proves you pressured Elena.""
"It proves nothing of the sort.""
Dad reached for the phone.
Vanessa pulled it away.
"You don't get to touch this.""
I looked at her.
"Play it again.""
She hesitated.
"Why?""
"Because I heard something.""
Vanessa's fingers tightened around the phone.
I repeated the recording in my head.
My mother's voice.
The faint rustling in the background.
Then a third sound, almost buried beneath the conversation.
A door closing.
And a man's voice, speaking quietly after the recording supposedly ended.
She'll sign when she understands what happens if she doesn't.
I looked at Dad.
He had gone pale.
"Who said that?"" I whispered.
Dad didn't answer.
Adrian stepped closer.
"Marcus?""
My father stared at the phone.
Then he looked at me.
"It was me.""
The room went silent.
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"You threatened Mom?""
Dad's eyes filled with tears.
"I was trying to stop the scandal. Vanessa told me the institute would ruin Elena if she continued fighting. I thought I could persuade her to sign an agreement and leave quietly.""
"You threatened her.""
"I thought it would protect you.""
I recoiled.
"Stop saying that.""
He fell silent.
I could no longer look at him.
Every time I uncovered another piece of the past, the same excuse appeared.
Protection.
Love.
Family.
As if those words could make betrayal harmless.
Rachel quietly gathered her briefcase.
"This matter requires a formal investigation. I will preserve the documents and report the recording to the institute's board.""
Adrian nodded.
"Please do.""
Vanessa watched them, her face rigid.
"You can't prove any of this.""
I held up the ledger.
"We can prove the dates. We can prove Mom refused the contract. And we can prove you had access to the designs before you submitted your claim.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"You think that ledger is enough?""
"Not by itself," Adrian replied.
"But it's a beginning.""
He turned toward Rachel.
"Arrange an independent forensic examination. Every page, every signature, every timestamp. Nothing leaves the chain of custody.""
Rachel nodded.
Then Vanessa did something none of us expected.
She smiled.
It was small and cold.
"You've all forgotten one thing.""
She slipped her phone into her handbag.
"Elena didn't create the Phoenix Gown alone.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
Vanessa looked directly at me.
"Your mother had a partner. Someone whose name never appeared on the official sketches.""
Adrian's face changed.
"That's impossible.""
"Is it?""
Vanessa walked toward the door.
"Ask your beloved archivist, Adrian. Ask Evelyn Shaw who really created the original wing structure.""
She paused in the doorway.
"And when you find out, ask yourself why she kept it secret for seventeen years.""
Then she left.
Nobody followed her.
I looked down at the ledger.
My mother's handwriting covered the pages, clear and confident.
But on the final sheet, beneath the drawing of the Phoenix Gown, was a second signature.
Not Elena's.
Not Vanessa's.
A name I had never seen before.
*Evelyn Shaw.*
May you like
And beside it, in my mother's handwriting, were four words.
She built the wings.
