Chapter 9: The Name On The Forged Papers

My father didn’t speak for several seconds.

Neither did I.

Because we all understood what the lawyer had just said.

Someone had forged my mother’s signature.

Someone wanted the world to believe she had done something wrong.

Even after she was gone.

“Send me everything,” my father said.

The lawyer agreed.

Then the call ended.

The kitchen became silent again.

Mia looked terrified.

“Rachel did this?””

My father didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

We all knew.

But knowing was different from proving.

And Rachel had spent years preparing.

I looked at the laptop.

The recording.

The hidden camera.

The stolen documents.

The fake complaint.

This wasn’t a moment of anger.

This was a plan.

A long one.

“She planned everything.””

My father looked at me.

“What?””

I stood.

“Think about it.””

I pointed toward the laptop.

“The dress wasn’t random.””

Then the flash drive.

“The letter wasn’t random.””

Then the phone.

“The college complaint wasn’t random.””

My voice shook.

“She has been waiting.””

My father’s expression changed.

Because he realized it too.

“She wanted me to fail.””

Mia whispered.

“Why?””

I looked at her.

“Because if I failed…”

I stopped.

Then I understood.

“Because she wins.””

My father stood.

“What do you mean?””

I looked at him.

“What happens if my college rejects me?””

He didn’t answer.

“What happens if people believe the fake records?””

Still nothing.

“What happens if your company records become public and everyone thinks Mom stole money?””

My father’s face went pale.

“She gets everything.””

Exactly.

Rachel wasn’t trying to hurt us.

She was trying to replace us.

The front door suddenly opened.

We all froze.

My father grabbed the nearest object from the counter.

A moment later, footsteps entered.

But it wasn’t Rachel.

It was my uncle Michael.

My father’s younger brother.

“Daniel?””

Everyone relaxed slightly.

“What are you doing here?”” my father asked.

Michael looked at all of us.

Then the laptop.

Then the papers.

“I came because I got a call.””

“From who?””

He hesitated.

“Rachel.””

The room changed.

My father stepped forward.

“Why?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“She wanted me to convince you to stop.””

“Stop what?””

Michael looked at me.

“Looking into your mother’s death.””

My heart stopped.

My father stared.

“What?””

Michael sighed.

“She contacted me yesterday.””

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought she was just angry.””

My father laughed quietly.

“She’s not angry.””

“No.””

Michael looked at the laptop.

“She’s scared.””

That word caught my attention.

“Scared?””

Michael nodded.

“She knows something is coming.””

My father walked closer.

“What do you know?””

Michael looked down.

For a moment, I thought he would refuse.

Then he said:

“I know your mother didn’t die because of an accident.””

The room went completely silent.

I felt dizzy.

“What?””

My father stared at his brother.

“Michael.””

“I’m sorry.””

“Explain.””

Michael sat down.

“Your mother called me the night before she died.””

My father’s face changed.

“She did?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she asked me not to.””

“Why?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because she was afraid someone was listening.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What did she say?””

Michael swallowed.

“She said if anything happened to her, I needed to protect Emma.””

My eyes burned.

Again.

That same sentence.

Protect Emma.

My mother had been trying to protect me even when she knew she might not survive.

“What else did she say?””

Michael looked at my father.

“She said Rachel knew about the account.””

My father closed his eyes.

“And?””

“She said there was someone helping Rachel.””

Nobody moved.

“Who?””

Michael hesitated.

Then he pulled a folded piece of paper from his jacket.

“I found this in my files last week.””

He placed it on the table.

My father opened it.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

He handed it to me.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

And one name at the bottom.

A name I recognized.

Because it belonged to someone who had been standing beside us the entire time.

Someone who had acted like they were helping.

Someone who knew exactly where every piece was hidden.

My hands started shaking.

Because beneath Rachel’s name…

Was my father’s name.

May you like

And beside it were the words:

*Final approval.*
