Chapter 7: The Sister I Never Knew

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The words were simple.

Too simple.

But they changed everything.

*You weren’t the only child he had.*

I stared at my mother.

Waiting for her to take it back.

Waiting for her to laugh.

Waiting for her to say it was some cruel misunderstanding.

She didn’t.

And that was when the truth became real.

“What did you say?””

My voice barely came out.

My mother looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stepped backward.

“No, don’t apologize. Explain.””

Richard remained silent.

That bothered me more than anything.

Because Richard always had an answer.

Always had a document.

Always had another piece of information.

But now?

He looked just as shocked as I felt.

“You knew?””

I looked at him.

His eyes moved away.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“Emily—”

“How long?””

He didn’t answer.

“How long have you known I had a sibling?””

My mother whispered:

“Since before you were born.””

The room spun.

I grabbed the edge of the bookshelf.

“Before I was born?””

She nodded.

My voice rose.

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

The honesty was brutal.

I looked at the photograph in my hand.

My father.

A woman.

A baby.

Me.

Or someone who looked like me.

“What is this?””

My mother wiped her tears.

“That picture was taken at St. Catherine’s Hospital.””

I looked down at the bracelet again.

The name was blurry.

But the date was clear.

The year before I was born.

“So that baby…”

My mother closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Richard.

“Who is she?””

He finally spoke.

“Her name is Claire.””

The name felt strange.

Like someone was introducing me to a ghost.

“Claire who?””

Richard looked at my mother.

And my mother whispered:

“Claire Bennett.””

My stomach dropped.

Bennett.

The same last name.

“Thomas Bennett?””

My mother nodded.

I felt sick.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Richard looked at me.

“Emily…”

“My father’s business partner?””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was confirmation.

I walked away from them.

My mind was trying to connect pieces that didn’t belong together.

Thomas.

My father’s best friend.

The person who betrayed him.

The person connected to the missing money.

And now…

A daughter?

A sister?

“How?””

I turned around.

“How could Dad have a child with Thomas Bennett’s family?””

My mother’s face changed.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

“Claire was not Thomas’s daughter.””

I frowned.

“Then why Bennett?””

My mother looked at the photograph.

“Because Claire’s mother married Thomas after she disappeared.””

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

I waited.

My mother looked like she was about to say something she had spent years trying to forget.

“Her name was Sarah.””

I felt a strange sense of recognition.

I had heard that name before.

“Sarah who?””

My mother looked at me.

“Sarah Bennett.””

Richard spoke quietly.

“Your father’s first love.””

The room became silent.

I felt anger rising.

“So Dad cheated?””

“No.””

My mother answered immediately.

“Your father never knew.””

I stared at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because Sarah disappeared before Daniel met me.””

She looked down.

“Before you were born.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The woman holding the baby.

The woman who had been erased from my family’s history.

“Then why did Dad have this?””

Richard stepped closer.

“Because he found out about Claire years later.””

“When?””

“Six months before he died.””

I remembered.

Six months.

The same time he discovered the missing money.

The same time everything changed.

My father wasn’t just investigating a company betrayal.

He was discovering a family secret.

“What happened to Sarah?””

My mother’s face tightened.

“She died.””

“How?””

She hesitated.

“An accident.””

I looked at her.

Another hesitation.

Another secret.

“Mom.””

She swallowed.

“That’s what we were told.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Richard answered.

“It means Daniel didn’t believe it.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because the timing was too convenient.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Sarah died right after Dad found Claire?””

“Yes.””

“And Thomas?””

Richard’s expression darkened.

“He knew.””

I looked down.

Of course he did.

Thomas Bennett was everywhere.

Every secret.

Every betrayal.

Every shadow around my father.

“But why would Thomas hide Claire?””

My mother looked at me.

“Because Claire was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That Daniel’s life was not what everyone thought.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Richard opened the folder again.

This time, he removed a birth certificate.

My hands started shaking before I even read it.

Because I already knew.

The name at the top.

Claire Bennett.

The father listed.

Daniel Hayes.

I looked up.

“My father knew.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Six months before he died.””

“And he was going to tell me?””

My mother nodded.

“He wanted you to know.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Her face broke.

“Because he died.””

I looked away.

The anger was easier than the grief.

Always easier.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, the night was still.

Like the world hadn’t just changed.

I had spent my whole life believing I was my father’s only child.

His only daughter.

The person he left everything to.

Now I had a sister.

A sister connected to the same man who might have destroyed my family.

“What happened to Claire?””

Nobody answered.

That scared me.

“What happened?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Claire disappeared.””

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

My blood ran cold.

The same year my father died.

“The same year?””

“Yes.””

My mother sat down.

“Daniel found her.””

“Where?””

“In a small town outside the city.””

“And?””

“He planned to bring her into his life.””

I stared.

“My father wanted a relationship with her.””

“Yes.””

“Did he tell me?””

“No.””

The answer hurt.

Not because he had a secret.

Because I wondered why he thought I couldn’t handle the truth.

My mother saw my expression.

“Emily, your father loved you.””

“I know.””

“He wasn’t replacing you.””

“I know.””

But a small part of me wondered.

The part of me that had always been afraid of losing people.

Richard stepped closer.

“Your father’s biggest fear was that the truth would destroy both of his daughters.””

“Both?””

He nodded.

“Because whoever was behind everything knew about Claire.””

I turned.

“What?””

Richard pulled out another document.

A police report.

“Three weeks before your father died, someone broke into Sarah’s old house.””

My eyes widened.

“Why?””

“They were looking for records.””

“What records?””

“Proof that Claire existed.””

I looked at the photograph.

The baby bracelet.

My father’s handwriting.

Everything suddenly felt connected.

Someone wasn’t just stealing money.

They were erasing people.

“Does Claire know?””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because she doesn’t remember.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Richard looked at me.

“Claire was in an accident when she was young.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

“And?””

“She lost pieces of her memory.””

The room went quiet.

My father’s secret daughter.

Missing.

With no memory of the family she came from.

And someone trying to keep it that way.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Another message.

Unknown number.

I looked down.

This time, there was a picture.

My hands went cold.

It was a recent photo.

Not an old one.

A woman standing outside a coffee shop.

Dark hair.

Same eyes.

Same expression.

I knew immediately.

Even before I read the message.

*You finally found your sister.*

My heart stopped.

The next line appeared.

*Now find out why your father died protecting her.*

I looked up.

Richard’s face had gone pale.

My mother whispered:

“No.””

“What?””

She stared at the picture.

Then at me.

“Emily…”

Her voice trembled.

“That’s not possible.””

I looked back at the photo.

The woman standing there.

Alive.

Watching the camera.

May you like

And beneath the message was one final sentence.

*Claire knows who killed Daniel Hayes.*
