Chapter 6: The Shadow Robert Sent

Nobody spoke.

The words hung in the hospital room like a warning.

*The person Robert sent when he wants someone to disappear.*

Elena looked at Daniel.

She wanted to believe he was exaggerating.

She wanted to believe this was another misunderstanding.

Another complicated piece of a story that would eventually make sense.

But then she looked at Maya.

Her daughter was terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And that was the moment Elena stopped searching for reasons to doubt.

She started searching for ways to protect her.

Sarah immediately moved toward the door.

“Everyone stays calm.””

Her voice was steady.

Professional.

But Elena noticed something.

Sarah locked the door.

A small action.

A simple action.

Yet it made Elena’s heart race.

“Who is he?”” Elena asked.

Daniel didn’t take his eyes off the window.

“His name is Victor Hale.””

“Who is Victor Hale?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Someone Robert has used for years.””

“For what?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“For problems.””

A cold feeling moved through Elena.

“What kind of problems?””

Daniel finally turned around.

“The kind that disappear quietly.””

Maya grabbed Elena’s arm.

“Mom.””

Elena looked at her.

“It’s okay.””

But the words sounded empty.

Because for the first time, Elena understood something.

Robert hadn’t just been hiding things.

He had built a system around hiding things.

Sarah pulled out her phone.

“I’m contacting hospital security.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Don’t just call security.””

Sarah looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because if Victor is here, Robert already knows what’s happening inside this building.””

The room went still.

Elena looked at the hallway.

“How?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because everyone understood.

Someone inside the hospital could be helping him.

Maya’s breathing became uneven.

“He knows I told.””

Elena immediately turned toward her.

“No.””

Maya looked at her.

“He knows.””

“No.””

“He always knows.””

The pain in Maya’s voice broke Elena.

She sat beside her.

“Look at me.””

Maya slowly looked up.

“You are not alone anymore.””

A tear rolled down Maya’s face.

“I should have told you sooner.””

Elena shook her head.

“Don’t.””

“But if I had—”

“Don’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“You were a child.””

Maya looked away.

“I was scared.””

“I know.””

“I thought nobody would believe me.””

Elena held her hand.

“I believe you.””

The words were simple.

But Maya started crying.

Because those were the words she had needed years ago.

Daniel looked away, giving them privacy.

Then his phone vibrated.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

Elena asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel?””

He slowly turned the phone around.

A message.

From an unknown number.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THIS ALONE.*

Below it was a photo.

A photo of Daniel standing outside the hospital entrance.

Taken minutes ago.

Maya gasped.

“He’s watching us.””

Sarah immediately took the phone.

“Do not respond.””

Daniel nodded.

But his hands were shaking.

Elena noticed.

“You’re afraid of him.””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Because for the first time, Daniel looked completely honest.

“Because I know what he’s capable of.””

The hallway lights flickered.

Everyone looked toward the door.

A shadow passed beneath it.

Maya stopped breathing.

“Mom.””

Elena stood.

“I’m here.””

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A voice came from outside.

“Mrs. Carter?””

Not Robert.

A stranger.

Calm.

Polite.

That somehow made it worse.

Sarah stepped forward.

“Who is this?””

The voice answered.

“My name is Victor Hale.””

Nobody moved.

“I’m here because there seems to be a misunderstanding.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

There was no humor in it.

“That’s what he always says.””

Victor continued through the door.

“Mr. Reed, this doesn’t involve you.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“It always involves me.””

A pause.

Then Victor spoke again.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

Elena felt anger replace fear.

She walked closer to the door.

“You don’t know what my daughter has been through.””

Silence.

Then Victor replied.

“Mrs. Carter.””

The way he said her name made her freeze.

“I understand you are upset.””

“Upset?””

Elena’s voice rose.

“You came here after my daughter spent years afraid.””

“I came here to prevent further damage.””

The words made her blood run cold.

“Damage to who?””

Another pause.

Then:

“To everyone.””

Maya grabbed Elena’s sleeve.

“Don’t talk to him.””

Elena looked at her.

And realized something.

Maya knew this type of conversation.

She knew how people like Victor worked.

They didn’t threaten first.

They made you question yourself.

Sarah motioned for everyone to step away.

She whispered:

“Do not engage.””

Then she called security again.

This time, someone answered.

A few seconds later, Sarah’s expression changed.

“What?””

Elena looked at her.

“What happened?””

Sarah lowered the phone.

“They said nobody by that name has checked in at the front desk.””

Daniel frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

Sarah looked toward the door.

“Then how did he get this far?””

Nobody had an answer.

The silence was broken by another sound.

A notification.

Maya’s phone.

Elena looked at it.

Another message.

From Robert.

This time, there was a video attached.

Maya immediately went pale.

“No.””

Elena picked up the phone.

“Maya?””

“Don’t watch it.””

But Elena already had.

The video started.

It showed their house.

The living room.

The place where Elena had spent years believing her family was safe.

Robert was sitting on the couch.

Looking directly at the camera.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

“Maya,” he said.

The room listened.

“If you’re seeing this, you’ve made a mistake.””

Maya started shaking.

Elena stopped the video.

But Robert’s voice continued in her mind.

Daniel looked horrified.

“He recorded that before coming here.””

“How do you know?””

“Because that’s what he does.””

Elena stared at the phone.

“He’s trying to scare her.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“What then?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“He’s trying to make her think he still controls the story.””

Maya wiped her tears.

“He does.””

Elena looked at her.

“No, he doesn’t.””

Maya shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I do.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“He always has a backup plan.””

The room became silent.

Daniel slowly looked at Maya.

“What did he tell you?””

Maya hesitated.

Then whispered:

“He told me if I ever spoke…”

She looked at Elena.

“…he would show everyone the video.””

“What video?””

Maya’s face turned white.

“The one he said would prove I was lying.””

Elena felt sick.

“What video?””

Maya looked toward the door.

And whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Maya.””

She shook her head.

“He said he had proof.””

Sarah’s expression hardened.

“Did you ever see this video?””

“No.””

“Did he show it to anyone?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked at Elena.

“Robert doesn’t need proof.””

Elena frowned.

“What?””

“He only needs people to believe he has proof.””

A loud knock interrupted them.

Everyone froze.

Victor’s voice came again.

“Mrs. Carter.””

The calmness was gone.

Now there was something else.

Urgency.

“You need to think carefully about what happens next.””

Sarah stepped toward the door.

“Security is on the way.””

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he said something that made Maya’s entire body go still.

“Maya.””

Her eyes widened.

“How does he know my name?””

Daniel’s face changed.

Because he realized the truth.

Victor wasn’t guessing.

He knew.

“Maya,” Victor said through the door.

“You don’t know what your father protected you from.””

Maya whispered:

“He’s lying.””

Daniel stared at the door.

Then quietly said:

“Maybe.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel’s expression was filled with fear.

“But there’s one thing we never asked.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“What if Robert wasn’t protecting himself?””

A chill ran through the room.

Elena stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

He lowered his voice.

“What if the reason he destroyed everyone who got close…”

A pause.

“…was because he was hiding something even bigger?””

At that exact moment, the hospital power flickered.

May you like

The lights went out.

And in the darkness, Elena heard the door unlock.
