Chapter 5: The Person Who Was Never Supposed to Return

Elena stared at Daniel.

The room seemed to lose all sound.

The hospital lights above them hummed softly.

A nurse pushed a cart past the hallway.

Someone laughed somewhere far away.

But inside Maya’s room, nobody moved.

“Dead?””

The word came from Elena’s mouth before she realized she had spoken.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“According to Robert.””

Maya’s face changed.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at her.

“It means Robert told people someone was gone.””

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation made Maya stand straighter.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“No, don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Look at me like that.””

Daniel looked away.

Maya’s hands started shaking.

“Who is it?””

Daniel reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out an old photograph.

The edges were worn.

The colors had faded.

He placed it on the table.

Elena picked it up.

At first, she didn’t understand what she was seeing.

A group of people.

A backyard.

A summer barbecue.

Robert was there.

Daniel was there.

And standing beside them was a woman Elena had never seen before.

A woman with a bright smile.

A woman who looked completely out of place beside Robert’s carefully controlled expression.

“Who is she?””

Daniel looked at the picture.

“Rachel.””

Elena frowned.

“Rachel who?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Rachel Reed.””

Elena looked at him.

“Your wife?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya looked confused.

“What does she have to do with me?””

Daniel’s expression broke slightly.

“Because she was the first person who tried to expose Robert.””

The room went silent.

Elena looked back at the photograph.

“What happened to her?””

Daniel stared at the floor.

“Robert said she died.””

The way he said it made Elena understand.

He didn’t believe it.

“You don’t believe him.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Because I was there the night she disappeared.””

Maya looked at him.

“Tell us.””

Daniel’s eyes moved toward the door.

Almost like he expected Robert to appear.

Then he began.

“Two years ago, Rachel started noticing things.””

“What things?””

“Things about Robert.””

Elena looked down.

The name was becoming something she hated hearing.

“Rachel worked in accounting for Robert’s company,” Daniel continued.

“She saw financial records I didn’t see.””

“Records?””

Daniel nodded.

“She found money missing.””

“How much?””

“Enough to ruin him.””

Sarah immediately focused.

“Financial records can be important. Do you still have access to them?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because after Rachel disappeared, Robert made sure everything connected to her vanished.””

Maya looked at the photograph.

“She knew about him.””

“Yes.””

“What exactly did she know?””

Daniel looked at her.

“That he wasn’t just hurting people emotionally.””

Elena’s stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Like he was choosing every word carefully.

“I’m saying Robert built a life around controlling people.””

Sarah nodded.

“Control can take many forms.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“And he knew exactly how to make people afraid.””

Maya wrapped her arms around herself.

Elena moved closer.

“Daniel, what happened the night Rachel disappeared?””

His face became distant.

Like he was watching something that happened years ago.

“I got a call from her.””

“When?””

“Almost midnight.””

“What did she say?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“She said Robert knew.””

Elena felt a chill.

“Knew what?””

“That she had found the documents.””

The room was silent.

“She told me she was going to meet Robert and confront him.””

“You let her go?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I tried to stop her.””

“But?””

“She said she was tired of running.””

Maya looked at the photo again.

“What happened after?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“She never came home.””

Nobody spoke.

“I called her.””

A pause.

“Again and again.””

Another pause.

“Then Robert called me.””

Elena looked up.

“Robert?””

Daniel nodded.

“He sounded calm.””

That detail frightened Elena more than anger would have.

“What did he say?””

Daniel stared at his hands.

“He said, ‘Some people don’t know when to stop asking questions.’”

Elena felt sick.

“What did you do?””

“I went to his house.””

Maya immediately looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I thought he had done something.””

“And?””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

“When I arrived, Robert was already there.””

“Was Rachel with him?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Elena covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Maya whispered:

“What did you see?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I saw enough to know Rachel wasn’t safe.””

The room felt colder.

“Did you call the police?””

Daniel’s silence returned.

Elena’s anger rose.

“Daniel.””

“I did.””

“And?””

“They didn’t believe me.””

“Why?””

Daniel gave a painful laugh.

“Because Robert was Robert.””

Elena knew exactly what he meant.

The respected businessman.

The generous neighbor.

The father everyone praised.

“He told them I was unstable,” Daniel said.

“He said I was angry because my marriage was failing.””

Maya looked shocked.

“But you weren’t married anymore?””

Daniel nodded.

“Not after Rachel disappeared.””

Elena looked at him.

“You divorced?””

“No.””

The answer confused her.

“Then what?””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“I never signed the papers.””

“Why?””

“Because I believed she was alive.””

Maya stared at him.

“You spent two years believing your wife was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because I knew Robert.””

The words were quiet.

“And because people don’t disappear when someone wants them gone.””

A long silence followed.

Then Sarah spoke.

“Mr. Reed, if Rachel is alive, where is she?””

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He pulled out another piece of paper.

A handwritten note.

Elena looked at it.

“What is that?””

“Something I received yesterday.””

Maya looked alarmed.

“Yesterday?””

Daniel nodded.

“Before I came here.””

Sarah took the paper carefully.

“What does it say?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Maya looked at him.

“Read it.””

Sarah unfolded the note.

Her expression changed as she read.

“What?””

Elena stood.

“What does it say?””

Sarah looked at Maya.

Then at Daniel.

“It says…”

She paused.

Daniel finished the sentence.

“It says Rachel is ready to talk.””

Nobody moved.

Then Maya whispered:

“Where is she?””

Daniel looked at the door.

“She’s waiting.””

Elena’s heart raced.

“Here?””

“No.””

“Then where?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

And the fear returned to his face.

“Somewhere Robert can’t reach her.””

Maya frowned.

“Why are you scared?””

Daniel looked at the hospital window.

Because outside, in the parking lot below, a black SUV had just pulled in.

Elena noticed.

“What?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He was staring at the vehicle.

“Maya.””

Her daughter looked at him.

“Call whoever you trust.””

The fear in his voice made everyone freeze.

“Why?””

Daniel stood slowly.

Because he knew that vehicle.

“I told Rachel I would protect her.””

He looked at Elena.

“And I failed once.””

The SUV door opened.

A man stepped out.

Daniel’s face went pale.

“It’s him.””

Elena’s breathing stopped.

“Robert?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked toward the window.

The man below was not Robert.

But Daniel looked more terrified than before.

“Then who is it?””

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“The person Robert sent when he wants someone to disappear.””
