Thinking

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Empire

The pounding on my front door stopped.

For three seconds, there was complete silence.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Claire, please.””

His voice was different now.

Not angry.

Not commanding.

Broken.

The same voice he used ten years ago when we sat on the floor of our tiny apartment eating takeout because we couldn’t afford a dining table.

The same voice that once made me believe I was the only person in the world who mattered to him.

But memories were dangerous.

Especially when they belonged to someone who no longer existed.

I stood behind the door, my fingers still wrapped around the lock.

On the other side were the two people who had shattered my life in a single afternoon.

My husband.

And the woman wearing the ring that was supposed to be mine.

“Claire,” Vanessa called again.

“You deserve to know the truth.””

I almost laughed.

The truth.

Everyone suddenly loved that word after they had spent months hiding it from me.

I unlocked the door.

Not because I forgave them.

Not because I wanted to hear their excuses.

I opened it because I wanted to see their faces when they realized I was no longer the woman they thought they could control.

Daniel stood there looking completely different from the man in the office.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His hair was messy.

His eyes were red.

Behind him, Vanessa stood perfectly composed.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She looked like she belonged in a magazine cover.

Not standing in my doorway at midnight.

“What do you want?”” I asked.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Claire—”

“No.””

He stopped.

I pointed at the hallway.

“You have five minutes.””

His expression tightened.

“Five minutes?””

“Yes.””

“After ten years of marriage, I get five minutes?””

I stared at him.

“After ten years of marriage, I got five seconds to watch you announce your engagement.””

That silenced him.

Vanessa looked away.

For the first time, she seemed uncomfortable.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I never wanted you to find out like this.””

I looked at him.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You keep saying things that make it sound like the problem was the timing.””

His face fell slightly.

“What happened at that office was complicated.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It was very simple.””

I pointed toward the street.

“You kissed another woman.””

I pointed at him.

“You lied to your wife.””

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“And you helped him.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

I smiled.

“Then tell me.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me more than any confession could.

Daniel noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“Not here.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s funny.””

Neither of them moved.

“Not here. Not at the office. Not tonight. Not in front of employees.””

I stepped closer.

“Daniel, when exactly was the right place for you to tell me your marriage was ending?””

He had no answer.

Because there was no answer.

The truth was, he never planned to tell me.

Not until he had already replaced me.

I turned away from them.

“You have four minutes left.””

Daniel ran a hand over his face.

“Claire, there are things about Whitmore Dynamics you don’t know.””

I froze.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I knew exactly where this was going.

“Go on.””

He looked at Vanessa.

She nodded slightly.

That bothered me.

The fact that they had already discussed this.

The fact that they had prepared for this conversation.

They had rehearsed my reaction.

Daniel took a breath.

“When we started the company, things were different.””

I almost smiled.

“Were they?””

“Yes.””

He looked around my house.

The house I had paid for.

The house I had chosen.

The house he loved showing off whenever investors visited.

“You remember when we had nothing.””

“I remember.””

“I remember you believing in me.””

The words sounded strange coming from him.

Like he was reading them from a script.

“You worked two jobs while I built the first version of Whitmore Dynamics.””

I said nothing.

“You used your savings to keep us afloat.””

Still nothing.

“You mortgaged your inheritance.””

My eyes narrowed.

There it was.

The thing he didn’t want to say.

The thing he had been avoiding.

“My inheritance,” I repeated.

Daniel looked down.

Vanessa stepped in.

“Claire, the company was never built only by Daniel.””

I looked at her.

For the first time all night, I didn’t see her as my husband’s affair partner.

I saw something else.

Someone who knew more than she should.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa glanced at Daniel.

He nodded.

“Tell her.””

Vanessa took a slow breath.

“Your 83% ownership stake…”

She paused.

“It isn’t just because you invested money.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked directly at me.

“Claire, your family’s original investment was the foundation of Whitmore Dynamics.””

The room went quiet.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me sadly.

“You never cared about the paperwork.””

“Because I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“I mean I never cared because we were married.””

Daniel flinched.

I continued.

“When we started, you told me we were partners.””

“We were.””

“Were we?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I had spent ten years believing we built something together.

But suddenly, I wondered if Daniel had been rewriting the story while I wasn’t looking.

Vanessa continued.

“The reason the company survived the early years was because your father’s investment agreement gave you majority voting rights.””

“My father died years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel managed the company.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you telling me this?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

A shadow crossed her face.

“Because Daniel has been trying to change the ownership structure.””

I stared at my husband.

“What?””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Claire, it’s not what you think.””

“That sentence should be illegal.””

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

I raised my hand.

“You don’t get to say listen to me anymore.””

He stopped.

I had never spoken to him like that before.

Maybe that was why he looked afraid.

“Explain,” I said.

Daniel swallowed.

“The board has been pushing for restructuring.””

“And?””

“And your shares created complications.””

I laughed.

“Complications.””

“Yes.””

“Meaning?””

He hesitated.

Vanessa answered.

“Meaning Daniel wanted your ownership reduced.””

The room went completely still.

I stared at Daniel.

“You wanted my shares?””

“No.””

“You wanted my company?””

“No, Claire.””

“Then what did you want?””

His silence was the answer.

I felt something cold settle inside me.

Not sadness.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Clarity.

For years, I thought Daniel loved me but failed me.

Now I wondered if he had loved what I represented.

The money.

The security.

The company.

The access.

The image.

“You married me because of the company.””

His face changed instantly.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

“Then why spend years trying to separate me from it?””

He stepped closer.

“Because I wanted to protect the company.””

I stared at him.

“The company?””

Not me.

Not us.

The company.

Vanessa watched silently.

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a folder.

My eyes immediately went to it.

“What is that?””

She walked toward me.

“Something Daniel hoped you would never see.””

Daniel’s voice became sharp.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You’ve hidden enough.””

She handed me the folder.

I opened it.

The first page was a legal document.

A proposal.

A transfer agreement.

My name appeared at the top.

Then I saw the signature line.

A signature that looked almost identical to mine.

Almost.

My heartbeat changed.

“What is this?””

Daniel went pale.

“Claire…”

I looked at him.

“Why is there a document here with my signature?””

Nobody answered.

I flipped the page.

Then another.

And another.

The dates were from six months earlier.

Six months ago.

While Daniel was telling me he loved me.

While he was kissing me goodbye every morning.

While he was pretending to work late.

I looked up slowly.

“Did you forge my signature?””

Daniel’s face turned white.

“No.””

“Then explain it.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Claire, that’s not the worst part.””

I looked at her.

“What could possibly be worse?””

She swallowed.

Then she said the one sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“Daniel wasn’t planning to leave you after getting engaged.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

And for the first time, I saw fear in her eyes too.

“It means…”

She lowered her voice.

“Your husband was planning to remove you completely before you ever found out about me.””

The folder slipped slightly in my hands.

I looked down at the papers again.

At the fake signature.

At the documents created behind my back.

At the evidence of a betrayal that started long before Valentine’s Day.

Then my phone rang.

The screen lit up.

It was my attorney.

I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice came through immediately.

“Claire, I need you to stay calm.””

I looked at Daniel.

At Vanessa.

At the two people standing in my home.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then my attorney said:

“Because the board just filed an emergency motion to freeze your company voting rights.””

My blood ran cold.

I tightened my grip on the folder.

“They did what?””

May you like

And then he added the words that made me realize this fight was never about a marriage.

“Claire… someone inside Whitmore Dynamics has been preparing to take everything from you for months.””
