Chapter 9: The Secret Inside Elena’s Necklace

Nobody spoke.

Not even the rain outside.

It felt like the entire world had stopped waiting for one answer.

The necklace.

The small silver pendant hanging around Claire’s neck.

The necklace Elena had given to Mia.

The necklace Claire had somehow ended up wearing.

I looked at Claire.

“Take it off.””

Her hand immediately covered the pendant.

“No.””

The answer was quick.

Too quick.

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Claire looked around the greenhouse.

At Ethan.

At Vanessa.

Then at me.

“Because you don’t understand what it is.””

“Then explain.””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You can’t?””

After everything.

After six years of lies.

After my daughter was taken.

After Elena died.

She still couldn’t tell me the truth.

I stepped closer.

“Claire.””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the warning.

“You have one chance.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Adrian…”

“One chance to stop protecting secrets.””

For several seconds, she didn’t move.

Then slowly…

She removed the necklace.

She placed it in her palm.

The pendant looked ordinary.

Almost too ordinary.

A simple piece of silver.

Something anyone could overlook.

But I knew Elena.

She never did anything without a reason.

I held out my hand.

Claire hesitated.

Then placed it in my palm.

The moment I touched it, something felt strange.

Not because of the necklace.

Because of the memories attached to it.

Elena wearing it while cooking.

Elena touching it whenever she was thinking.

Elena smiling when Mia grabbed it as a baby.

I turned it over.

“There’s a mark.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“What?””

I pointed.

A tiny line on the back.

Almost invisible.

Like a crack.

But it wasn’t damage.

It was a hidden opening.

Claire’s expression changed.

“You shouldn’t.””

I looked at her.

“You knew.””

She didn’t answer.

I pressed the small edge.

A tiny compartment opened.

Inside was a small memory card.

Everyone went silent.

Vanessa whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at her.

“You knew about this?””

She looked away.

Another lie.

Another secret.

I took the memory card.

“Where is a computer?””

Claire stepped forward.

“Adrian, listen to me.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Everyone keeps telling me to listen.””

I held up the card.

“But nobody has been telling me the truth.””

I turned toward the exit.

“We’re going home.””

Twenty minutes later, we were back at the mansion.

Mia was upstairs with Mrs. Carter.

I made sure of that before anything else.

No more secrets around my daughter.

No more adults making decisions while she suffered.

In my office, Ethan, Claire, and Vanessa stood across from me.

Three people.

Three different versions of the truth.

I connected the memory card.

The computer screen opened.

There was one file.

One video.

Created six years ago.

The date made my chest tighten.

The night Elena died.

I clicked play.

At first, the screen was dark.

Then Elena appeared.

My breath stopped.

It was impossible.

She was alive.

Sitting in the greenhouse.

Holding the same necklace.

Her face was tired.

Her eyes were red.

But she was still Elena.

The woman I had lost.

“Adrian,” she said.

My hands started shaking.

“If you’re watching this…”

She looked down.

“Then something happened.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Ethan looked away.

Claire covered her mouth.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Elena continued.

“I don’t know who will find this.””

She paused.

“But I know one thing.””

Her eyes became serious.

“Someone close to us is lying.””

The words felt familiar.

Because I had read them before.

“I wanted to tell you everything.””

She looked toward the camera.

“But I was afraid.””

A tear rolled down her face.

Not dramatically.

Not like a movie.

Just one tear.

A real one.

“Adrian, if something happens to me, please don’t blame yourself.””

I closed my eyes.

Because even now, she was still trying to protect me.

“I need you to protect Mia.””

The screen showed Elena touching the necklace.

“The evidence is here.””

My heartbeat increased.

“The person behind this believes they have won.””

She paused.

“But they don’t know something.””

She smiled sadly.

“Mia is stronger than anyone realizes.””

I looked toward the stairs.

My daughter.

The little girl everyone underestimated.

Elena continued.

“The person helping them isn’t who you think.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

Then Claire.

Then Ethan.

The video became blurry.

Like someone had touched the camera.

Elena looked behind her.

She looked scared.

“I have to go.””

A voice came from somewhere outside the frame.

A man.

“Who are you talking to?””

Elena froze.

The video shook.

Then Elena whispered:

“No…”

The screen went black.

The room stayed silent.

Nobody moved.

Finally, I said:

“That’s it?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“That’s all we had.””

“We?””

Her face tightened.

“Yes.””

I looked at Ethan.

“You had this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Claire answered.

“I found it after Elena died.””

I turned toward her.

“You said you made a deal.””

“Yes.””

“To protect this?””

She nodded.

“And to hide it.””

My anger returned.

“You hid the only proof Elena left me.””

“I was trying to keep it away from them.””

“Who?””

Claire looked at the computer screen.

Then whispered:

“The person Elena was talking to.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You know who it was.””

Claire didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

She looked at me.

Then slowly said:

“Yes.””

The room became colder.

“Who?””

She took a breath.

“Someone you trust.””

I waited.

The silence was unbearable.

Then her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

Vanessa immediately stepped back.

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“Not Vanessa.””

Everyone froze.

I looked confused.

“Then who?””

Claire’s eyes moved to me.

And the answer destroyed every assumption I had made.

“Your lawyer.””

I stared.

“My lawyer?””

“Yes.””

The name came back instantly.

The man who had handled my father’s estate.

The man who helped restructure my company.

The man who advised me after Elena died.

The man who was always there when I needed someone.

Marcus.

“No.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“He was the one moving the money.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You worked with him?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The confession hit.

“You knew?””

“I knew someone was involved.””

“Not who?””

She shook her head.

“I was scared.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was scared.””

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a familiar voice.

A calm voice.

A voice I had heard hundreds of times.

“Adrian.””

My blood went cold.

“Marcus.””

The room went silent.

He laughed softly.

“So you finally opened the necklace.””

I gripped the phone.

“How do you know?””

“Because Elena always underestimated one thing.””

“What?””

“She trusted people too much.””

My jaw tightened.

“Where is my daughter?””

A pause.

Then:

“Safe.””

I closed my eyes.

“If you hurt her…”

“I won’t.””

His voice became colder.

“But you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“You’ve spent six years looking for the person who destroyed your family.””

A pause.

“You never asked why Elena was protecting you from yourself.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus answered:

“Come alone.””

“Where?””

“The place where everything started.””

The line went quiet.

Then he added:

“And Adrian…”

I waited.

“Bring the necklace.””

The call ended.

I looked at the others.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

The final secret wasn’t hidden in the past anymore.

It was waiting for me.

May you like

And this time…

I was going to face the person who had been controlling the story from the beginning.
