Chapter 7: The Man Who Wore My Face
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The greenhouse felt frozen.
The broken glass above us let the rainlight spill across the floor.
My daughter was holding onto me.
Vanessa was standing behind me.
And the man in front of us…
Looked like a memory that had come back to life.
He had my eyes.
My height.
My voice.
But he wasn’t me.
I knew that.
I had spent six years looking at my own reflection every morning.
I knew my own face.
And yet, seeing him standing there made something inside me question everything.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
The man smiled.
A calm, almost gentle smile.
The kind that made him more frightening.
“You really don’t remember.””
My hands tightened around Mia.
“Remember what?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“Everything.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Adrian, take Mia and leave.””
The man laughed quietly.
“That’s interesting.””
His eyes moved toward her.
“You’re still pretending to protect them.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Shut up.””
I looked between them.
“You know him.””
Neither answered.
That was enough.
“You know him.””
The man walked closer.
“Of course she knows me.””
He tilted his head.
“She’s the reason I got close to your family.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa’s voice became sharp.
“Don’t listen to him.””
The man smiled.
“Still controlling the story, Vanessa?””
I looked at her.
“What is he talking about?””
She didn’t answer.
The man stopped a few feet away.
“My name is Ethan.””
The name meant nothing.
But the way Vanessa reacted did.
Her face went pale.
“No.””
I noticed.
“You know that name.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Adrian…”
“Tell me.””
Her lips parted.
Then closed.
Ethan laughed softly.
“Six years later, and she still can’t tell the truth.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
He looked at me.
“I was Elena’s brother.””
The words hit like a wave.
I froze.
“Elena didn’t have a brother.””
“That’s what you were told.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My mind searched through memories.
Family dinners.
Conversations.
Everything Elena had ever told me.
No brother.
No Ethan.
“That’s impossible.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“She erased me.””
Vanessa immediately said:
“Don’t listen to him.””
Ethan looked at her.
“You know what happened.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Explain.””
She looked trapped.
For the first time, she didn’t have a prepared answer.
“I…”
I raised my voice.
“Explain!””
Mia flinched.
I immediately lowered myself.
“Sorry.””
I looked at my daughter.
“You’re okay.””
She nodded.
But she kept staring at Ethan.
Like some part of her recognized him.
Ethan noticed.
“She remembers.””
My heart dropped.
“What?””
“She remembers that night.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
He looked at Mia.
“Your mother tried to protect you.””
Mia hid behind me.
“Daddy…”
I turned.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
Nothing about this was okay.
I looked at Ethan.
“What happened that night?””
He took a slow breath.
“Your wife discovered that Vanessa was stealing from the foundation.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head.
“He’s lying.””
Ethan continued.
“She confronted her.””
My mind flashed back to Elena’s unfinished email.
Someone close to us is lying.
“She found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Ethan looked toward the old greenhouse.
“The evidence that could destroy Vanessa.””
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“She deserves to know.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She looked at me.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
My voice became colder.
“You let me believe Elena died in an accident.””
“I didn’t kill her.””
“I didn’t ask that.””
The silence after those words was heavy.
Because I realized something.
I wasn’t asking if Vanessa killed Elena.
I was asking why she had hidden the truth.
Ethan continued.
“Vanessa wasn’t the only person involved.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He smiled sadly.
“You still don’t understand.””
A terrible feeling formed in my stomach.
“Understand what?””
“That night wasn’t about Elena finding stolen money.””
He stepped closer.
“It was about what Elena discovered after that.””
“What?””
Ethan looked directly at me.
“You.””
The word made no sense.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“You weren’t supposed to survive.””
The greenhouse went silent.
I felt Mia’s hand gripping mine.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Your wife discovered someone was trying to destroy your family.””
“Who?””
His eyes moved to Vanessa.
Then back to me.
“Someone who wanted your company.””
My blood ran cold.
“My company?””
“Yes.””
I thought about the past.
The business expansion.
The unexpected investors.
The people who had appeared after Elena’s death.
Everything suddenly felt connected.
“Who?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his jacket.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
He pulled out a small envelope.
Then handed it to me.
Inside was a document.
A contract.
I read the first page.
And my hands started shaking.
It was a transfer agreement.
My company shares.
Signed six years ago.
But the signature…
Was mine.
I looked up.
“I never signed this.””
Ethan nodded.
“I know.””
My breathing became uneven.
“Then why is my signature on it?””
“Because someone copied it.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
“What did you do?””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know about that.””
“Then what did you know?””
She looked away.
And that was when I realized.
She knew something.
Not everything.
But something.
“Mia,” I whispered.
My daughter looked up.
“Yes, Daddy?””
“Do you remember Ethan?””
She stared at him.
Slowly, she nodded.
A little.
“He came to Mommy’s room.””
Everyone froze.
Ethan looked surprised.
“What?””
Mia continued quietly.
“Mommy told him to leave.””
My heart raced.
“You saw him?””
She nodded.
“He was angry.””
Ethan looked down.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
Mia squeezed my hand.
“Mommy said…”
Her voice shook.
“She said, ‘You promised me you would never hurt him.’”
Ethan went completely still.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Because she knew.
I looked at Ethan.
“What promise?””
He didn’t answer.
“What promise?””
His eyes moved to Mia.
Then back to me.
Finally, he whispered:
“I promised Elena I would protect you.””
The words didn’t match the man standing in front of me.
A man who had frightened my daughter.
A man who had taken her.
“Then why did you take Mia?””
His face changed.
Regret.
“I didn’t.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“I found her.””
“Found her where?””
“Here.””
I looked around.
“You expect me to believe someone else brought my daughter here?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Ethan looked toward the entrance.
And his expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Because the person who took Mia…”
He stopped.
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone walking through the rain.
Ethan whispered:
“…is the person who has been controlling all of us from the beginning.””
The greenhouse door opened.
And a familiar voice said:
“You always were terrible at keeping secrets, Ethan.””
I turned.
My entire body went cold.
Because the person standing in the doorway…
Was someone I had trusted.
Someone I never questioned.
Someone who had been part of my family for years.
And she was smiling.
“Hello, Adrian.””
I couldn’t speak.
Because the woman standing there…
May you like
Was Elena’s sister.
Claire.
