Chapter 8: The Betrayal Behind The Friendship
Adrian stood in the driveway long after the call ended.
The screen of his phone had gone dark.
But Daniel’s words stayed.
She was trying to remove you from Mia’s life.
The sentence repeated in his mind.
Not because he didn’t believe it.
Because he did.
And that was the part that terrified him.
For weeks, maybe months, people had been having conversations about his daughter’s future without him.
They had watched.
They had collected information.
They had prepared documents.
And Daniel had been there.
His best friend.
The person Adrian trusted most after losing his wife.
The person who knew exactly how much Mia meant to him.
Adrian walked into the house slowly.
Mia was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.
She looked up immediately.
“Daddy?””
He forced a smile.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
“Are you okay?””
The question surprised him.
Because she was the child.
She was the one who had been hurt.
Yet she was still checking on him.
“I’m okay.””
Mia looked at him carefully.
She had started doing that recently.
Watching people’s faces.
Trying to figure out if they were telling the truth.
Adrian hated that.
A child shouldn’t have to learn how to read adults because adults failed her.
He sat beside her.
“What are you drawing?””
She turned the paper around.
It was a picture of their family.
Adrian.
Mia.
And a woman with long hair holding a little girl’s hand.
Her mother.
“You drew Mom.””
Mia nodded.
“I wanted her here.””
Adrian swallowed.
“I think she would love it.””
Mia smiled faintly.
Then she looked down.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Are we going to be okay?””
He knew what she meant.
Not just today.
Not just the party.
Everything.
He took her hand.
“Yes.””
“Promise?””
“Yes.””
He paused.
“But I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Has anyone ever said things to you that made you feel like you were bad?””
Mia became quiet.
Too quiet.
Adrian noticed.
“Mia?””
She looked at the drawing.
“Sometimes.””
His chest tightened.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“Vanessa.””
He stayed calm.
Even though every instinct wanted him to react.
“What did she say?””
Mia played with the edge of the paper.
“She said I make things harder for you.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“When did she say that?””
“Sometimes when you weren’t home.””
That answer hurt.
Not because Vanessa had said something cruel.
Because she had chosen moments when Mia was alone.
“When else?””
“She said you were happier before.””
Adrian felt something inside him break.
“Mia.””
“She said adults need adult time.””
Her voice became smaller.
“And that someday you would want a life without having to worry about me.””
Adrian looked at his daughter.
A seven-year-old girl carrying words she should never have heard.
He pulled her into his arms.
“Listen to me.””
She looked up.
“You are not something I have to worry about.””
“But…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You are someone I love.””
Mia nodded.
But Adrian knew something.
Love could repair wounds.
But first, he needed to stop the person creating them.
That evening, Daniel came to the house.
Adrian almost didn’t let him in.
But he needed answers.
Real ones.
Daniel stood in the doorway looking exhausted.
“I know you don’t want to see me.””
“You’re right.””
Daniel nodded.
“I deserve that.””
Adrian stepped aside.
“Talk.””
They sat across from each other.
The same kitchen.
The same table.
The same place where Daniel had eaten dinner with them countless times.
But now it felt unfamiliar.
“Start from the beginning,” Adrian said.
Daniel looked down.
“When Vanessa met you, she knew Mia was your priority.””
“That’s not a secret.””
“No.””
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
“But she believed things would change.””
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She thought once you remarried, Mia would become less dependent on you.””
Adrian stared.
“And when that didn’t happen?””
Daniel looked away.
“She became frustrated.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you help her?””
Daniel was silent.
Finally, he said:
“Because she manipulated me.””
Adrian didn’t react.
“Explain.””
Daniel sighed.
“She knew I was struggling financially.””
Adrian’s expression changed slightly.
Daniel continued.
“I lost my business last year. I didn’t tell many people.””
Adrian looked shocked.
“You didn’t tell me?””
“I was embarrassed.””
“You were my best friend.””
“I know.””
Daniel looked down.
“And Vanessa knew.””
Adrian understood.
“She used it.””
Daniel nodded.
“She offered to help.””
“With what?””
“My debts.””
The silence was heavy.
Adrian leaned back.
“So you helped her because she paid you?””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
“I thought she was right.””
Adrian looked at him.
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“I thought maybe you were trapped.””
“Trapped?””
“By your grief.””
The words hurt.
But Adrian listened.
“I thought you had built your entire life around protecting Mia because you were afraid of losing her.””
Daniel looked up.
“And Vanessa convinced me that you needed someone to push you to move forward.””
Adrian shook his head.
“So you decided my daughter was the thing holding me back.””
“No.””
“That’s exactly what you decided.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I was wrong.””
“Yes.””
“I know.””
“You weren’t confused, Daniel.””
Adrian leaned forward.
“You made choices.””
Daniel nodded.
“I did.””
A long silence passed.
Then Adrian asked:
“What was Vanessa’s real goal?””
Daniel looked nervous.
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know something.””
Daniel took a breath.
“She wanted evidence.””
“For what?””
“That you were unstable.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Because I love my daughter?””
“Because she wanted to argue that you couldn’t make objective decisions.””
Daniel continued.
“She planned to show people that you were too emotionally attached to Mia.””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“The irony is unbelievable.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
“She was trying to prove I loved my daughter too much.””
Neither man spoke.
Because the truth sounded ridiculous.
But dangerous things didn’t need to be logical.
They only needed to convince the right people.
“Where is Vanessa now?”” Adrian asked.
Daniel hesitated.
“She left town.””
“What?””
“She found out you knew about the documents.””
“When?””
“This morning.””
Adrian stood.
“She ran.””
Daniel nodded.
But then he reached into his bag.
“I brought something.””
He placed an envelope on the table.
Adrian looked at it.
“What is it?””
“Insurance.””
Adrian frowned.
Daniel opened it.
Inside were printed messages.
Texts between Vanessa and Daniel.
Dates.
Times.
Plans.
Adrian picked up the first page.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
Because one message changed everything.
It was from Vanessa.
*“Once Adrian loses credibility, Evelyn will support the transition. The child will adjust.””*
The child.
Not Mia.
Not his daughter.
The child.
Like she was an object being moved.
Adrian turned the page.
More messages.
More proof.
Then he saw the last one.
The newest message.
Sent after the birthday party.
His hands went cold.
Because it wasn’t about guardianship anymore.
It wasn’t about reports.
It was about something much bigger.
Vanessa had written:
*“If Adrian refuses to cooperate, we use the final option.””*
Adrian looked at Daniel.
“What final option?””
Daniel’s face became pale.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I swear I don’t.””
Adrian looked back at the message.
Then another notification appeared.
A new message.
From Vanessa.
The number was unknown.
But the words were clear.
*“You found the documents. Good. Now you’ll understand why I had to do this.””*
Adrian stared.
A second message arrived.
*“Ask your daughter what happened the night her mother died.””*
The room went completely silent.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Because there was only one reason Vanessa would mention that night.
She knew something.
Something about Mia’s mother.
Something Adrian had never been told.
May you like
And suddenly, the secret they had been hiding wasn’t about the future.
It was about the past.
