Chapter 6: The Truth Buried Under The Paperwork
Adrian stared at the document until the words blurred.
He read the title again.
*TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP AGREEMENT.*
The paper looked official.
Too official.
There were signatures.
Dates.
Legal language.
A plan written neatly in black ink.
A plan about his daughter.
His hands tightened around the page.
“She signed this,” Rachel whispered.
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because his mind was somewhere else.
Three weeks.
Three weeks before Mia’s birthday.
Three weeks before Vanessa ruined her dress.
Three weeks before anyone saw Mia cry.
They had already decided what story they wanted people to believe.
“She was going to take Mia from me,” Adrian said quietly.
Rachel shook her head.
“Not necessarily.””
He looked at her.
“What else could this be?””
“I don’t know.””
Rachel picked up the document carefully.
“But we need to understand exactly what it says.””
Adrian looked back at the kitchen window.
Outside, Mia was sitting on the porch with a coloring book.
She was drawing flowers.
The same flowers that were embroidered on her ruined dress.
Even after everything, she was still trying to save the memory.
That hurt him more.
“I should have seen it,” he said.
Rachel looked up.
“What?””
“All of it.””
“Adrian.””
“I ignored every sign.””
He looked down.
“Every time Vanessa complained about Mia. Every time she said I was too protective. Every time she made comments about needing more control.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Blame yourself for someone else’s choices.””
He didn’t respond.
Because part of him understood.
But another part couldn’t stop thinking about one thing.
Mia had trusted him to protect her.
And somehow, people had been planning against her while he was trying to build a future.
A knock came from the front door.
Both of them turned.
Adrian immediately stood.
He wasn’t surprised when he saw Evelyn standing there.
The woman looked older than she had yesterday.
Tired.
Guilty.
But Adrian didn’t move aside.
Not this time.
“Can I come in?””
He stared at her.
“I don’t know.””
The answer hurt her.
He saw it.
But he didn’t soften.
Not yet.
Evelyn looked past him.
“Mia?””
“She’s outside.””
Evelyn nodded.
Then she looked at the document in his hand.
“You found it.””
Adrian felt his stomach drop.
“You knew I would.””
She closed her eyes.
“I knew eventually you would.””
“Eventually?””
His voice rose.
“How long were you planning to hide this from me?””
Evelyn looked down.
“I was trying to prevent something worse.””
“That’s what everyone keeps saying.””
“Adrian—”
“No.””
He stepped back.
“Everyone involved keeps pretending they were helping.””
His eyes filled with anger.
“But nobody asked Mia what she needed.””
Evelyn swallowed.
“She needs stability.””
“She has stability.””
“She has you.””
“Yes.””
“That’s the problem.””
The words hung between them.
Adrian looked at her.
“Say that again.””
Evelyn’s expression changed.
She knew she had gone too far.
“I didn’t mean it like that.””
“Yes, you did.””
“No.””
“You all think I’m the problem because I won’t let go of her.””
Evelyn looked away.
“We think you’re afraid.””
Adrian froze.
“Afraid of what?””
“Losing her.””
The honesty surprised him.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Because that part was true.
Adrian was afraid.
After losing his wife, the idea of losing Mia terrified him.
But fear wasn’t the reason he loved his daughter.
He loved her because she was his daughter.
“You think that makes me dangerous?”” he asked.
“No.””
“Then why did you sign this?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because I saw my daughter disappear.””
Adrian went quiet.
“What?””
Evelyn sat down slowly.
“When your wife died, Mia was only two.””
Adrian remembered.
Every detail.
The hospital room.
The machines.
The last goodbye.
Evelyn continued.
“I watched you survive.””
She looked at him.
“But I also watched you stop living.””
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
Adrian looked away.
“You don’t know what I felt.””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“I don’t.””
A pause.
“But I saw it.””
She looked toward the window.
“You stopped seeing friends. You stopped going out. You stopped caring about yourself.””
Adrian said nothing.
“Every conversation became about Mia. Every decision became about Mia.””
“She was a toddler who lost her mother.””
“I know.””
“Then why are we talking like that was wrong?””
Evelyn wiped her eyes.
“It wasn’t wrong.””
“Then what was wrong?””
She looked down.
“I was afraid you would never allow anyone else into your life.””
Adrian understood.
Finally.
Not everything.
But enough.
This wasn’t only about Mia.
It was about the adults around her.
Their fears.
Their assumptions.
Their belief that Adrian’s love had become something unhealthy.
But they had made one mistake.
They had turned their concern into a secret attack.
“You could have talked to me,” he said.
“I know.””
“You could have told me you were worried.””
“I know.””
“Instead, you created documents.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I made a mistake.””
Adrian laughed softly.
“A mistake?””
She looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
He shook his head.
“You keep using that word.””
“I deserve that.””
The silence stretched.
Then Adrian asked:
“What was the plan?””
Evelyn looked confused.
“What?””
“The birthday party.””
Her face changed.
“I don’t know what you mean.””
“Yes, you do.””
Adrian placed the document on the table.
“Vanessa blamed Mia.””
Evelyn looked down.
“Daniel said there was a plan.””
A flicker of fear crossed her face.
“What did Daniel tell you?””
“Enough.””
Evelyn became quiet.
That was the moment Adrian knew.
She knew more.
“What were they supposed to do?””
She didn’t answer.
“Evelyn.””
Her voice shook.
“Vanessa wanted proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That Mia was becoming difficult.””
Adrian felt cold.
“She wanted evidence?””
“Yes.””
“Evidence for what?””
Evelyn looked away.
“To show that you were too emotional to make decisions about Mia.””
The room went silent.
Adrian couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“They wanted to use my love for my daughter against me.””
Evelyn whispered:
“Yes.””
“And you helped them.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“I thought I was helping Mia.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You were helping people who wanted control.””
Evelyn looked like she wanted to argue.
But she couldn’t.
Because she knew.
Then Adrian noticed something.
The document wasn’t the only thing on the table.
There was another page attached.
A page he hadn’t seen before.
He picked it up.
Rachel moved closer.
“What is that?””
Adrian read the first line.
His expression changed.
Because it wasn’t a guardianship agreement.
It was a report.
A psychological evaluation request.
With a subject name.
*Mia Harper.*
His daughter.
Someone had requested an evaluation.
Someone wanted a professional record created.
But there was one detail that made his blood run cold.
The request date.
The day after Mia’s birthday party.
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
“This was supposed to happen after yesterday?””
Evelyn looked confused.
“What?””
He turned the page around.
“They weren’t just trying to ruin her birthday.””
Nobody spoke.
“They were trying to create a story.””
A story where Mia was the problem.
A story where Adrian was the reason.
A story that would make strangers believe they were protecting a child.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke quickly.
“Is this Adrian Harper?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Dr. Laura Bennett.””
Adrian frowned.
“Why are you calling me?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I believe someone submitted false information about your daughter.””
Adrian looked at the document.
His heart started racing.
“What information?””
The woman hesitated.
“The report claimed Mia had serious behavioral issues.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Who submitted it?””
The line went quiet.
Then Dr. Bennett said:
“I can’t disclose private information without authorization.””
Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.
“But I can tell you one thing.””
“What?””
“The person who contacted my office was not trying to help Mia.””
A cold silence filled the kitchen.
“Then what were they trying to do?””
The answer came softly.
“They were trying to make sure nobody believed her.””
Adrian looked through the window.
At his little girl.
At the child who had spent yesterday asking if she ruined everything.
And he finally understood.
The ruined dress was never the real attack.
It was just the first step.
May you like
Someone had been building a case against his daughter.
And now Adrian had to find out who was behind it before they destroyed the way the world saw Mia forever.
