Chapter 2: The Footage Nobody Wanted Me To See

The security room smelled like dust and old electronics.

It was a place I rarely visited.

The cameras were installed years ago because of business concerns, not family problems.

I never imagined they would become the only witness my son had.

I picked up the folder.

My hands were shaking.

The first page showed the date.

The same day.

The same afternoon.

The same moment I came home early.

Behind me, the door creaked.

I turned around.

It was Marcus, the head of security.

He looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Hayes.””

I held up the footage.

“What is this?””

He swallowed.

“I was going to speak with you.””

“When?””

He looked down.

“That was the problem.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Explain.””

Marcus walked closer.

“Mrs. Vanessa asked us not to mention anything.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“She asked you?””

“Yes.””

“What exactly did she ask?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he said quietly:

“She told us family matters should stay private.””

I stared at him.

“And you listened?””

His face tightened.

“I made a mistake.””

I wanted to be angry.

But I understood something.

Fear existed in every household.

Even large ones.

Even wealthy ones.

Especially when one person controlled the story everyone else was afraid to question.

“Play it,” I said.

Marcus inserted the recording.

The screen came alive.

There was Caleb.

Walking through the kitchen with his blanket.

There was Vanessa.

Standing near the counter.

At first, everything looked normal.

Then the conversation began.

“Caleb, how many times do I have to tell you to be careful?””

Vanessa’s voice came through the speakers.

“I’m sorry,” Caleb replied.

“You always say that.””

“I didn’t mean to.””

“You never mean to.””

I felt my stomach twist.

On the screen, Caleb looked exactly like the boy I had carried inside.

Small.

Confused.

Trying to fix something he didn’t understand.

Then the juice spilled.

A tiny accident.

A normal childhood moment.

But Vanessa’s reaction changed everything.

She slammed the cup down.

“You ruined the tablecloth.””

“I’m sorry.””

“Stop saying that.””

Caleb froze.

Then Vanessa pointed toward the back door.

“Go outside.””

My breathing stopped.

The footage continued.

“Please,” Caleb said.

“I said outside.””

“I don’t want to.””

“You need to learn.””

The little boy grabbed his blanket.

“I’m cold.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Maybe next time you’ll listen.””

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn’t watch.

Then Marcus stopped the video.

“I’m sorry, sir.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“Play the rest.””

The footage continued.

Minutes passed.

Caleb sat outside.

Looking through the glass.

Waiting.

Waiting for Vanessa to change her mind.

Waiting for someone to open the door.

Then something happened.

Something I never expected.

Vanessa walked back to the door.

Caleb immediately stood up.

“Can I come inside?””

She looked at him.

And instead of opening the door…

She turned off the patio light.

The screen went dark.

I felt something inside me break.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Caleb wasn’t trying to tell me what happened.

He was trying to tell me for months.

I just wasn’t listening carefully enough.

Then Marcus spoke.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“More?””

He nodded.

“There was another recording from last week.””

My heart sank.

“Show me.””

He opened another file.

The timestamp appeared.

Seven days earlier.

The camera showed Caleb sitting alone in the hallway.

Holding his blanket.

Waiting.

Then Vanessa entered the frame.

And the moment I saw who was standing beside her, I stopped breathing.

Because the person beside my wife was someone I never expected to see.

May you like

Someone who knew exactly what was happening inside my home.

And had chosen to stay silent.
