Chapter 9: The Truth Buried With My First Wife

For five years, I had lived with the same story.

My wife, Emily, was gone.

A rainy night.

A terrible accident.

A phone call that changed my life forever.

That was all I knew.

That was all anyone told me.

Everyone around me repeated the same words.

“It was unavoidable.””

“She didn’t suffer.””

“You need to focus on Caleb.””

And I did.

I focused on my son.

I built a life around protecting him.

But now, standing in front of Vanessa, hearing those words…

*He knows what happened the night your first wife died.*

I felt like the ground beneath me had shifted.

“Explain.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Vanessa looked terrified.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Terrified.

“I don’t know everything.””

“You know enough to say that.””

She looked away.

“My father told me pieces.””

“What pieces?””

She swallowed.

“That Emily wasn’t supposed to be driving that night.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She had another person with her.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know what you were told.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I was there.””

The memory came back instantly.

The hospital.

The doctors.

The phone call.

The moment they told me she was gone.

I remembered every second.

“You weren’t there when it happened,” Vanessa said quietly.

The words hit me.

Because she was right.

I wasn’t.

I arrived after.

Everyone arrived after.

Everyone except the people who knew the truth.

“Who was with her?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Who?””

She closed her eyes.

“My father.””

The room became silent.

I stared at her.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

“My wife didn’t know your father.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She did.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

She hesitated.

“Before you and I met, your company had a legal dispute.””

I remembered.

A small issue involving one of our suppliers.

Nothing major.

Nothing connected to my personal life.

“My father was involved.””

“Why?””

“He was advising the other side.””

I stared at her.

“Your father knew Emily because of business?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

The answer was painful because it was simple.

She had hidden it.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life that everyone knew except me.

“Why was he with her that night?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I don’t know.””

“Then find out.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“You said he knows.””

“Yes.””

“Then I want the truth.””

She shook her head.

“Adrian, you don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“My father is not someone you confront.””

I almost laughed.

After everything?

After my son?

After all the lies?

“You think I’m afraid?””

“No.””

Her voice became quiet.

“I think you don’t know what he’s capable of.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it sounded real.

Not like an excuse.

Like a warning.

I left the guest house and drove straight to Daniel’s apartment.

I needed answers.

Real answers.

When he opened the door, he already knew why I was there.

“You talked to her.””

I walked inside.

“You knew about Emily.””

Daniel froze.

The silence was enough.

I closed the door.

“Tell me.””

He looked exhausted.

“Adrian…”

“Tell me.””

He sat down.

For a moment, he looked like my brother again.

Not the man who kept secrets.

Not the man who failed me.

Just my brother.

“I knew there were questions.””

“What questions?””

“About the accident.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I didn’t know what to say.””

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Everyone always knows what to say when they want to hide something.””

Daniel looked down.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of destroying what was left of your family.””

I stepped closer.

“My family was already destroyed.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because Emily asked me not to tell you.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

Daniel looked up.

“Before she died, she called me.””

My heart began racing.

“When?””

“The day before the accident.””

“What did she say?””

He hesitated.

“She said if anything happened to her, I needed to protect you and Caleb.””

The room felt colder.

“Protect me from what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“From people who would use your grief against you.””

My mind immediately went to Vanessa.

But Daniel shook his head.

“Not just Vanessa.””

“Who else?””

He reached into a drawer.

Pulled out an old envelope.

“I kept this because I didn’t know what to do with it.””

My hands shook as I took it.

The envelope was worn.

Old.

My name was written across the front.

*Adrian.*

“Why didn’t you give this to me?””

“Because after Emily died, you were barely surviving.””

“That wasn’t your choice.””

“I know.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Emily’s handwriting.

The first line nearly broke me.

*My love, if you are reading this, something has gone wrong.*

I had to stop.

I pressed my fingers against the paper.

Then continued.

*I need you to trust your instincts. There are people around us who care more about what we have than who we are.*

My breathing became uneven.

The next sentence made my hands tremble.

*Someone close to us has been asking questions about Caleb’s future.*

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

I continued reading.

*I don’t know who I can trust anymore.*

Then:

*If something happens to me, please don’t let anyone convince you that you are incapable of raising our son.*

My eyes blurred.

Because Emily knew.

She knew someone would try to take Caleb from me.

Years before Vanessa entered our lives.

The final line was the one that destroyed me.

*Adrian, I am scared that our son will become a battle instead of a child.*

I folded the letter.

My hands were shaking.

“Who was she talking about?””

Daniel whispered:

“I don’t know.””

“Someone knew.””

“Yes.””

“Someone helped hide this.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“Was it you?””

His face changed.

“No.””

I believed him.

Because for the first time, he looked as broken as I felt.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

Calm.

Older.

Confident.

“Adrian Hayes.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

“You’ve been asking questions.””

My blood ran cold.

“How do you know?””

A small laugh.

“Because you’re finally asking the right ones.””

I stood.

“Are you Vanessa’s father?””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My grip tightened.

“What happened to my wife?””

Another pause.

Then his voice became colder.

“Your wife found something she shouldn’t have.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

“She discovered the truth about the people around you.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“You always thought Emily’s death was the beginning of your pain.””

The line went quiet.

“It wasn’t.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Then he said the words I never expected.

“Your wife didn’t die because of an accident.””

I stopped breathing.

The call ended.

I stood there holding the phone.

Daniel looked at me.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because for five years, I had mourned my wife.

I had built my life around a tragedy.

But now I had to face the possibility that tragedy had been created.

And somewhere in the middle of all these lies…

Someone had been waiting for me to find out.
