Chapter 8: The Test That Changed Everything
The next morning, Maya refused to go downstairs.
She sat on her bed holding the stuffed rabbit she had owned since she was four.
The same rabbit Emily bought her.
The same rabbit she slept with after nightmares.
I sat beside her.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked at me.
“Why?””
The question surprised me.
“Because you had to hear something so big.””
She looked down.
“Am I supposed to call someone else Mom now?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
“But she is my mom.””
I took a breath.
“There are different kinds of love.””
Maya looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
“It means biology matters. But it isn’t the only thing that matters.””
She stared at the floor.
“Do you still want me?””
I felt tears burn my eyes.
“Maya.””
“What if I’m not really yours?””
I held her face gently.
“You are my daughter.””
“But—”
“No.””
I made sure she heard me.
“You were my daughter yesterday. You are my daughter today. You will be my daughter tomorrow.””
She cried quietly.
And I held her until she stopped.
Downstairs, Rachel and Vanessa were waiting.
The room felt like a courtroom.
Nobody wanted to speak first.
Finally, Rachel placed a folder on the table.
“I arranged a DNA test.””
Maya looked at me.
“What happens after?””
I knew what she meant.
Not the test.
The answer.
I sat beside her.
“Nothing changes.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
“No.””
She looked hurt.
“I need to explain.””
“You had eleven years.””
The sentence silenced her.
Rachel watched us quietly.
Then she spoke.
“I don’t want to take her from you.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She wiped her eyes.
“I know what it feels like to lose a child.””
She looked at Maya.
“I don’t want Maya to lose another parent.””
Maya looked at her.
“Did you look for me?””
Rachel nodded.
“Every day.””
“Why didn’t you find me?””
Rachel’s face broke.
“Because someone made sure I couldn’t.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
The DNA test was scheduled for the following week.
Those seven days were the strangest days of my life.
Maya met Rachel slowly.
Not like a daughter meeting her mother.
Not yet.
Like a child meeting someone who knew pieces of her that nobody else did.
Rachel knew things.
Small things.
Things that made Maya curious.
“You hate strawberry ice cream.””
Maya blinked.
“How did you know?””
Rachel smiled sadly.
“Because your grandmother told me your mother ate strawberries every day when she was pregnant with you.””
Maya smiled.
A real smile.
The first one in days.
Vanessa watched from across the room.
And I wondered if she finally understood what she had almost destroyed.
One evening, I found Vanessa packing a suitcase.
“What are you doing?””
She didn’t turn around.
“Leaving.””
I leaned against the door.
“Why?””
“Because you hate me.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I should.””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised her.
“But hate isn’t the reason.””
“Then what is?””
I looked at the suitcase.
“You hurt my daughter.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“You made her believe she was unwanted.””
“I know.””
“You made her afraid I would stop loving her.””
Vanessa sat down.
“I was afraid too.””
I didn’t expect that.
She looked at me.
“I spent years feeling like Emily was still between us.””
“That wasn’t Maya’s fault.””
“I know.””
“Then why punish her?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“Because I was jealous.””
The honesty was painful.
“I hated that every time Maya smiled, I remembered I wasn’t the person who gave her that smile.””
I stood silently.
Vanessa whispered:
“I became the person I hated.””
The next morning, the DNA results arrived.
I held the envelope.
Maya sat beside me.
Rachel sat across from us.
Nobody breathed.
I opened it.
I read the first line.
Then the second.
Then I looked at Maya.
She immediately knew.
“Dad?””
I swallowed.
The room waited.
“Maya…”
My voice cracked.
“The test confirmed…”
I couldn’t finish.
Rachel covered her mouth.
Maya grabbed my hand.
“What?””
I looked at my daughter.
“Our family has been lying about the wrong thing.””
Rachel started crying.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“What does it say?””
I turned the paper around.
And Vanessa’s face went white.
Because the DNA results didn’t only reveal who Maya belonged to.
They revealed something nobody expected.
May you like
The hospital records were wrong.
But not in the way everyone thought.
