Chapter 6: The Name Written in the Letter
The letter fell from Samantha’s hands.
It landed on the wooden floor of the library with a soft sound.
But to her, it felt louder than an explosion.
Because one name was written on that page.
One name she never expected to see.
*Adrian Whitmore.*
The man who had defended her.
The man who had looked at her like she mattered.
The man who had been the first person in twenty years to ask what she wanted.
Her eyes slowly lifted.
Adrian was staring at the letter.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Just silent.
And that silence hurt more than anything.
“Why?””
Samantha’s voice was barely audible.
Nobody moved.
“Why is your name there?””
Adrian opened his mouth.
But no words came out.
Marcus watched him carefully.
Victoria looked terrified.
Samantha looked at all three of them.
And suddenly she felt like the only person in the room who knew nothing.
Again.
“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””
Her voice became stronger.
“But somehow, every person who says that has lied to me.””
She looked at Adrian.
“You knew about my mother.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Not everything.””
“But you knew something.””
A pause.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Samantha laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
She stepped backward.
“Of course you did.””
Adrian moved toward her.
“Samantha, listen to me.””
“No.””
The word stopped him.
For the first time, she wasn’t afraid of anyone in the room.
Not Victoria.
Not Marcus.
Not even Adrian.
“I trusted you.””
The sentence was simple.
But it affected him more than anger.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Samantha wiped her eyes quickly.
“You don’t know what it feels like to spend your whole life believing you don’t matter.””
Adrian’s expression softened.
“I do know what it feels like to lose family.””
“But you had one.””
She looked at him.
“You had a name. A company. A place in this world.””
She pointed toward herself.
“I had nothing.””
Adrian looked down.
Because he knew she was right.
Marcus crossed his arms.
“This is exactly why she cannot trust you.””
Adrian turned sharply.
“You’re enjoying this.””
Marcus smiled.
“Because the truth is finally coming out.””
Samantha looked at Marcus.
“What exactly did my mother mean?””
Marcus glanced at the letter.
“She knew the Whitmore family was dangerous.””
“Your family?””
Marcus didn’t deny it.
“My family.””
Samantha looked at Adrian.
“And yours?””
Adrian stayed silent.
That was enough.
Her heart sank.
“Tell me.””
Adrian looked at her.
“There are things my father did that I didn’t know about.””
“But you know now.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Adrian hesitated.
“Before I came here.””
Samantha’s face changed.
“You already knew.””
“I knew your name.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.
“I knew Eleanor had a daughter.””
“And you still came here.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The question hung in the air.
Adrian looked at her.
And for the first time, Samantha saw something close to guilt.
“Because I needed to confirm the truth.””
Her expression hardened.
“So I was an investigation.””
“No.””
“You came here to see if I was really her.””
“I came here because I needed to protect you.””
“From who?””
Nobody answered.
Samantha looked around.
Then she understood.
“From everyone.””
The room went silent.
Because that was the truth.
Everyone had their own reason.
Victoria wanted money.
Marcus wanted power.
Adrian wanted to fix something connected to his family.
But what did Samantha want?
She wanted the life that had been stolen from her.
She turned away.
“I need to leave.””
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
“That’s not safe.””
She looked back.
“Safe?””
Her voice cracked.
“You keep using that word.””
She picked up the letter.
“But I was never safe.””
A loud crash suddenly came from outside.
Everyone froze.
The mansion lights flickered.
Then went out.
Darkness covered the room.
Victoria gasped.
“What’s happening?””
Adrian immediately became alert.
“Everyone stay here.””
Marcus laughed softly.
“You still think you’re in control.””
Adrian ignored him.
He pulled out his phone.
No signal.
That was impossible.
The Collins mansion had private security.
Backup systems.
Emergency power.
Someone had disabled everything.
Samantha heard movement outside the library.
Footsteps.
Multiple footsteps.
Someone was inside the house.
Adrian moved closer to the door.
“Samantha, get behind me.””
This time, she didn’t argue.
Not because she trusted him.
Because she understood something.
Whatever was happening…
it was bigger than their secrets.
The library door suddenly shook.
Someone hit it from the other side.
Victoria screamed.
Then the door opened.
A man in a black jacket stepped inside.
He looked around the room.
His eyes stopped on Samantha.
“There she is.””
Adrian moved immediately.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
“Someone who has been searching for Eleanor Whitmore’s daughter for twenty years.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You’re late.””
The stranger looked at him.
“No.””
He smiled.
“I’m exactly on time.””
Samantha felt her stomach tighten.
“What do you want from me?””
The man looked at her.
“Your signature.””
She frowned.
“My signature?””
He held up a folder.
“Your mother left behind a final legal agreement.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“No.””
The man looked amused.
“You know about it?””
Adrian’s voice became cold.
“Leave.””
The stranger laughed.
“Still protecting her?””
He looked at Samantha.
“You should ask him why.””
Samantha turned.
“What?””
The stranger smiled.
“Ask Adrian why Eleanor created a document that could destroy the Whitmore family.””
Everyone became still.
Samantha looked at Adrian.
“What document?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
The stranger continued.
“The final inheritance agreement.””
He stepped closer.
“The one that says if anything happens to Eleanor…”
He paused.
“Control of Whitmore Industries does not go to her family.””
Samantha’s heart raced.
“Then who?””
The stranger looked directly at her.
“You.””
Silence.
The words were impossible.
“You’re lying.””
The man shook his head.
“No.””
He opened the folder.
Inside was another document.
A legal agreement.
Signed by Eleanor Whitmore.
Signed twenty years ago.
Samantha looked at the signature.
Her mother’s handwriting.
The stranger continued.
“Your mother knew someone would try to steal your inheritance.””
He looked at Adrian.
“She knew the Whitmores would come after her daughter.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“That’s not true.””
The stranger smiled.
“Then why did Eleanor write this?””
He turned the document around.
At the bottom was a sentence that made everyone stop.
*If Samantha Eleanor Whitmore is ever found, Adrian Whitmore must never be allowed to control her inheritance.*
Samantha stared.
The room became silent.
She slowly looked at Adrian.
The man who had promised to protect her.
The man whose name appeared on her mother’s warning.
And now…
the man her mother specifically told her never to trust.
“Adrian…”
Her voice trembled.
“Why did my mother fear you?””
For the first time since she met him…
Adrian Whitmore looked afraid.
And before he could answer, the stranger added one final sentence.
“Because your mother didn’t just disappear.””
He looked at Samantha.
“She was murdered.””
A cold silence filled the room.
May you like
Then he said:
“And Adrian’s father was the last person seen with her.””
