Chapter 9: The Notebook Beneath the Floorboards
Marcus didn't speak.
For several seconds, he could hear only Vanessa's uneven breathing through the phone.
“You helped Richard take Elena's money?””
“I didn't know what he was doing at first.””
“Then tell me when you found out.””
“Marcus, I can't do this over the phone.””
“Where is the notebook?””
“I have it.””
He closed his eyes.
“Where?””
“Somewhere safe.””
“Vanessa, stop using that phrase. You have spent years telling me things were safe while my daughter was frightened in her own home.””
She began to cry.
“I know.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Vanessa's breathing became ragged.
“Meet me at Elena's house. Alone.””
“No.””
“Please, Marcus. I need to show you something.””
“You can show it to Mr. Cole.””
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because if he sees the notebook before I explain, he'll think I was part of everything from the beginning.””
Marcus's voice hardened.
“Were you?””
“No!””
“Then you shouldn't be afraid of the truth.””
She went quiet.
Finally, she said, “I'll be there in thirty minutes.””
The call ended.
Marcus immediately contacted Mr. Cole.
“I need you at Elena's house.””
“What happened?””
“Vanessa says she has Elena's missing notebook. She claims it proves she was involved in the financial transfers.””
Mr. Cole paused.
“Don't meet her alone. I'll come with you.””
“She's insisting that I do.””
“Then tell her you're bringing legal counsel. If she refuses, we need to know why.””
Marcus looked at the clock.
Maya would be in class for another four hours.
He didn't want her anywhere near whatever was about to happen.
He sent her a message.
I'm handling something with Mr. Cole. You're safe at school. I'll pick you up this afternoon.
Her reply came almost immediately.
Is it about Mom?
Marcus stared at the screen.
He could no longer promise her that difficult truths would stay hidden until the right moment.
Yes. We're trying to understand what happened to her money. I'll tell you what we learn.
Maya sent back a single heart.
Marcus put the phone away and drove toward Willow Creek Lane.
Vanessa was already standing on the porch when Marcus arrived.
She wore a dark coat and held a small canvas bag against her chest.
She looked nothing like the woman who had hosted the luxury party only days earlier. Her hair was loosely tied back, her makeup had faded, and deep shadows sat beneath her eyes.
Marcus stopped at the foot of the steps.
“Where's the notebook?””
Vanessa looked at the street.
“I brought it.””
“Then give it to me.””
“Not until you hear what happened.””
He felt anger rise in his chest.
“You've had years to tell me.””
“I know.””
“You watched Maya carry dirty dishes in front of your guests. You threatened her with the house. You let me believe there was nothing wrong while you and Richard tried to move the property.””
“I know.””
“Stop saying that.””
Vanessa flinched.
Marcus took a breath.
“Tell me what happened.””
She sat on the porch steps.
For a moment, she stared at the garden.
Then she began.
“Richard came to me about six months after Elena died. He said there were discrepancies in the investment accounts and that he was trying to recover the money.””
“You told me you learned about the missing funds two years after that.””
“I wasn't telling the truth.””
Marcus remained standing.
“Go on.””
“Richard showed me statements. He said Elena had agreed to let him move funds between accounts. He claimed the money had been invested in several projects, but the records were incomplete because one of the companies had closed.””
“Did you believe him?””
“At first, yes.””
“And later?””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“Later, I found out he had used some of the money to cover his own debts.””
Marcus stared at her.
“How?””
“I found a letter from one of his creditors in his briefcase. He had left it in the study after a meeting with you.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I confronted him.””
“What did he say?””
“He told me he was going to repay everything. He said the money had been temporarily redirected, and that the investments would eventually recover.””
Marcus let out a bitter breath.
“Another promise.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I should have told you. I know that now.””
“Why didn't you?””
She looked up.
“Because I was afraid you would ask how much I knew.””
Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Richard told me that if the missing money became public, Elena's estate could be tied up in legal disputes for years. He said Maya might lose access to the property while everything was investigated. He told me you would blame me for bringing the problem into the family.””
“And you believed him.””
“I wanted to believe there was a way to fix it quietly.””
Marcus looked toward the front door.
“Where does the notebook come into this?””
Vanessa opened her canvas bag.
She removed a small wooden box, its corners worn and its brass clasp tarnished.
“I found this in the storage unit.””
Marcus stared at it.
“Why did you take the records?””
“Because Richard asked me to.””
“Why?””
“He said Paul Mercer was moving the company's files. He wanted me to collect a box before it was transferred.””
“And you did.””
“Yes.””
“What was in it?””
“Old statements, correspondence, and Elena's notebook.””
Marcus reached for the box.
Vanessa pulled it back.
“Please. Let me finish.””
He lowered his hand.
She opened the clasp.
Inside were several envelopes, a thin ledger, and a small notebook bound in blue cloth.
Marcus recognized the notebook immediately.
Elena had used it for grocery lists, medical appointments, and reminders. He remembered seeing it beside her bed during her final months.
He had assumed it contained nothing important.
Vanessa touched the cover.
“Richard told me the notebook would prove Elena had approved the transfers.””
“Does it?””
“No.””
She looked at him.
“It proves she challenged them.””
Marcus felt a cold weight settle in his stomach.
Vanessa opened the notebook to a page marked with a folded receipt.
Elena's handwriting filled the page.
Richard says the missing money is tied up in the second investment account. He promised to provide a complete statement by Friday. I asked him to stop all transfers until the balance is reconciled.
Below that, Elena had written another line.
Vanessa says she will help me obtain the records.
Marcus looked up.
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“She asked me to help her.””
“You knew Elena suspected Richard.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she wanted the records.””
“Yes.””
“And you still helped him hide them.””
Vanessa nodded, tears running down her cheeks.
“I thought if I could get the money back, I could make everything right before you found out.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You keep saying that as though secrecy were an act of kindness.””
“I know.””
“No, Vanessa. You knew Elena was frightened about her money, and you made yourself part of the problem.””
She bowed her head.
“I was wrong.””
Marcus took the notebook from her.
He turned several pages.
The entries became more detailed.
Dates.
Amounts.
Names of companies.
Questions Elena had written in the margins.
On one page, a figure had been underlined three times.
*$320,000 — transfer not authorized.*
Beneath it, Elena had written:
Richard says the money was moved to cover temporary losses. He has promised repayment. I no longer believe his explanations.
Marcus's hands began to shake.
The next page contained a list of payments to Richard's company.
Some were marked repaid.
Others were circled.
One had a question beside it.
Why did Vanessa receive this?
Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.
He turned the notebook toward his wife.
“What does this mean?””
Vanessa stared at the page.
Her lips parted.
“I can explain.””
“Then do it.””
She sat down hard on the porch step.
“Richard transferred money to my account.””
Marcus's face went still.
“How much?””
“Thirty thousand dollars.””
“Why?””
“He told me it was repayment for expenses I'd covered while helping him with the investment records.””
“What expenses?””
Vanessa looked away.
“There weren't any.””
Marcus felt the porch railing beneath his hand.
“You accepted thirty thousand dollars from money belonging to Elena?””
“I didn't know it came directly from her account.””
“But you knew Richard was trying to recover money he had lost.””
“Yes.””
“And you accepted it without asking where it came from.””
Vanessa began to cry harder.
“I thought it was his money.””
“Did you spend it?””
She nodded.
“On what?””
“Household expenses. My credit cards. Some things I had bought for myself.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You used money from Elena's account to pay your personal bills.””
“I didn't know the source!””
“You knew enough to hide it.””
Vanessa covered her face.
Marcus turned back to the notebook.
Another entry caught his attention.
Richard says the property may be needed to secure repayment. I told him the house belongs to Maya and cannot be used without proper authorization.
Marcus read the line aloud.
Vanessa went completely still.
“When was this written?””
She looked at the date.
“Two weeks before Elena died.””
Marcus felt the world narrow around him.
Elena had known Richard was trying to use the property as security.
She had refused.
And yet, years later, Richard and Vanessa had attempted to sell the same house.
“Did Richard know Elena had written this?”” Marcus asked.
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“He knew she kept records. That's why he wanted the notebook.””
“Then why didn't he destroy it?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus turned another page.
A folded letter had been tucked into the back cover.
He removed it carefully.
The paper was addressed to Elena.
There was no return address, only a handwritten name at the bottom.
*Paul Mercer.*
Marcus opened it.
The letter was short.
Elena,
I can no longer continue maintaining records that do not match the actual transfers. Richard has asked me to alter several entries and remove references to the original source of the funds. I refused.
If you need proof, I have kept copies of the original statements.
Do not tell Richard that I have contacted you.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know about this letter?””
“No.””
“Did Richard?””
“I don't know.””
Marcus folded the letter.
For the first time, the notebook offered something more than Elena's suspicions.
It suggested that someone inside Richard's company had tried to warn her.
And that the original records might still exist somewhere.
Marcus took out his phone.
“I'm calling Mr. Cole.””
Vanessa grabbed his wrist.
“Please wait.””
He looked down at her hand.
She released him immediately.
“I need to tell you one more thing.””
Marcus's voice was cold.
“What?””
“The thirty thousand dollars wasn't the only payment I received.””
He stared at her.
“How much more?””
Vanessa looked toward the street.
“Another twenty-five thousand.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“From Richard?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Last year.””
“For what?””
She swallowed.
“He said it was a repayment for the money I had spent helping him.””
“You just told me you didn't have expenses.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you accept it?””
“Because I had started to suspect the money wasn't going to be recovered. I was afraid that if I refused, Richard would tell you about the first payment.””
Marcus stepped back.
“So you accepted more money to keep him quiet.””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Yes.””
The confession hung between them.
For years, Marcus had believed the greatest danger to his family was a secret he hadn't discovered.
Now he understood that the real danger had been the series of choices people made after discovering it.
Each person had known enough to stop.
Each had chosen silence instead.
Marcus put the notebook inside the wooden box.
“We're giving this to Mr. Cole.””
Vanessa nodded weakly.
“I understand.””
“And you will tell him everything. Every payment. Every conversation. Every document you handled.””
She looked at him.
“Will you ever forgive me?””
Marcus stared at her for a long time.
“I don't know.””
Her face crumpled.
“But I know this,” he continued.
“Forgiveness won't make the evidence disappear. And it won't mean Maya has to trust you again.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I understand.””
Marcus turned toward the door.
Then he stopped.
“There's one thing I still don't understand. If Elena knew Richard was trying to use the house as security, why did she never tell me?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
She looked down at the notebook.
Then she whispered, “Because she was trying to protect you.””
Marcus turned back.
“Protect me from what?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Richard told her that if she reported the missing money, your company would be dragged into the investigation.””
Marcus went still.
“My company had nothing to do with Elena's investments.””
“I know that now. But Richard claimed he had used one of your company's accounts to move funds temporarily. He said he could make it look as though you had authorized the transfers.””
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
“Did he?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He showed Elena a document with your company's name on it. She became terrified that you'd be blamed for something you didn't do.””
Marcus stared at her.
A new possibility opened before him.
Richard hadn't merely taken money.
He might have used Marcus's business to conceal where it went.
And if that was true, the financial scandal could be far larger than the loss of Elena's inheritance.
Before Marcus could ask another question, his phone rang.
Mr. Cole.
“We've received a response from Paul Mercer's former office,” the attorney said.
“He has agreed to speak with us.””
Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.
“Does he have the original records?””
“He says he does.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Where is he?””
Mr. Cole gave him an address.
Then he added something that made Marcus's heart pound.
“There's one complication. Paul says he will only meet if Maya is present.””
Marcus froze.
“Why would he want my daughter there?””
“I asked the same question. He said Elena gave him specific instructions before she died.””
Marcus looked down at the blue notebook.
“What instructions?””
Mr. Cole paused.
“He says Elena told him that if the missing money was ever connected to Maya's house, he must deliver the original ledger directly to her.””
Marcus stared at the street beyond the porch.
For years, Maya had been treated as a child who couldn't understand the truth.
Now the person holding the key to Elena's final secret was insisting that she be the one to receive it.
Marcus ended the call and turned to Vanessa.
“You're coming with me to Mr. Cole's office. You're going to give him a complete statement.””
Vanessa nodded.
“And after that,” Marcus continued, “we're going to find out what Elena was trying to protect Maya from.””
That evening, Marcus sat beside Maya in the living room.
The blue notebook lay on the table between them, its pages protected inside a clear document sleeve.
He had told her the essential facts: that Elena had questioned the investment transfers, that Richard had admitted to unauthorized transactions, and that Vanessa had received money from him.
He had not described every entry.
Maya was already struggling to understand how two adults she had trusted could have been involved.
When he finished, she stared at the notebook.
“Did Mom know they were going to try to sell the house?””
“She knew Richard had considered using it as security. She refused to allow it.””
Maya touched the edge of the sleeve.
“She was protecting me.””
“Yes.””
Her eyes filled.
“Even when she was sick.””
Marcus put an arm around her.
“Especially then.””
Maya leaned against him.
“Dad, can I ask you something?””
“Anything.””
“If Mom knew the truth, why didn't she leave me a letter explaining it?””
Marcus looked at the notebook.
“I think she hoped the problem would be resolved before she died. And she may have been trying to protect you from something she couldn't fully explain yet.””
Maya was quiet for a moment.
Then she said, “I want to meet Paul Mercer.””
Marcus studied her face.
“Mr. Cole told me he wants to speak with you.””
“Then I want to go.””
“We'll go together.””
Maya nodded.
For the first time, she wasn't asking permission to be heard.
She was choosing to face the truth.
At 10:32 p.m., Marcus received a message from Mr. Cole.
Paul has confirmed tomorrow's meeting. He says the original ledger contains a transfer that Elena never discovered.
Marcus read the message twice.
A second message arrived.
He also says the transfer was made through a company associated with someone Elena trusted more than Richard.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
He typed a single question.
Who?
The reply came almost immediately.
Paul refuses to identify the person until Maya is present.
Marcus looked toward the stairs.
Maya's bedroom light had just gone out.
He wanted to protect her from every remaining secret.
But Elena had left instructions that made one thing clear.
May you like
The truth belonged to Maya, too.
And tomorrow, they would discover why.
