Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Plan
I stared at the message until the screen dimmed.
Don’t blame Vanessa yet.
The words bothered me.
Not because I trusted Vanessa.
I didn’t.
But because someone had been watching.
Someone knew exactly what was happening.
I looked around the ship.
Thousands of passengers walked past me.
Families laughing.
Couples holding hands.
Children running toward the pools.
Everyone had a story.
And somehow, mine had become a mystery.
I called the number.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Finally, a voicemail appeared.
A man’s voice.
“Millie, my name is Daniel Brooks. We need to talk before your family does more damage.””
I froze.
Daniel Brooks.
The name sounded familiar.
Then I remembered.
My father’s business partner.
The man Dad blamed years ago when everything started collapsing.
I found him near the ship’s coffee lounge.
He was sitting alone, holding a cup he hadn’t touched.
When he saw me, he stood.
“You came.””
I didn’t sit.
“You know who I am.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He looked away.
“Because your father talked about you.””
That surprised me.
“What did he say?””
Daniel gave a bitter smile.
“He said you were the one person who would always save him.””
The words felt like a punch.
“Why are you helping me?””
“Because I should have done it sooner.””
He opened a folder.
Inside were documents.
Again.
More papers.
More proof.
I was starting to hate paper.
It was strange how something so ordinary could destroy everything you believed.
“What is this?””
“Your father’s real financial situation.””
I looked down.
The numbers were worse.
Much worse.
“He wasn’t trying to save the company,” Daniel said.
I looked up.
“Then what was he doing?””
“Saving his lifestyle.””
My stomach tightened.
Daniel pushed a document toward me.
Luxury purchases.
Private memberships.
Large withdrawals.
“You’re lying.””
“I wish I was.””
I looked through the pages.
There were payments I recognized.
Places my father had mentioned.
“Business expenses.””
Daniel nodded.
“He called them that.””
The anger came slowly.
Not like an explosion.
More like a fire spreading.
“So every time he said he needed help…”
“He needed money.””
“And every time Mom cried…”
“She knew enough to be afraid.””
I closed the folder.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because your family benefited from you not knowing.””
That sentence hurt because it was true.
I returned to my room that evening.
My family was waiting outside.
All of them.
Dad.
Mom.
Vanessa.
I stopped.
“What now?””
Dad stepped forward.
“We need to talk.””
“No.””
His expression changed.
“You can’t keep running away.””
I laughed.
“Running away?””
I looked at the three people standing in front of me.
“I spent my entire life running toward you.””
Nobody spoke.
Dad’s voice softened.
“Millie, you’re angry.””
“Yes.””
“But you don’t understand everything.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because explanations require truth.
And truth was the one thing he had never given me.
Mom stepped forward.
“Your father made mistakes.””
I looked at her.
“And you covered for him.””
She cried.
“I was trying to protect our family.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at all of them.
“You were protecting the version of our family that everyone else got to see.””
Vanessa looked away.
That hurt.
Because I realized she knew exactly what I meant.
That night, I received another message.
This one from Daniel.
*Ask your mother about the cruise payment.*
I frowned.
The cruise payment?
I had paid for it.
Everyone knew that.
I called him.
“What does that mean?””
He answered quietly.
“There’s something strange about the cruise.””
“What?””
“Your father knew about the reservation before you told him.””
I sat up.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
I thought back.
The dinner.
The way Dad complained about the price.
The way Vanessa immediately said she needed a break.
The way Mom looked hopeful.
“Millie.””
Daniel’s voice interrupted my thoughts.
“Your family didn’t just take advantage of the cruise.””
My stomach dropped.
“They planned it.””
I looked at the penthouse around me.
The room I had thought represented freedom.
Now it felt like evidence.
“Planned what?””
A long silence.
May you like
Then he said:
“To get you to pay for one last thing.””
