Chapter 7: The Enemy Inside Our Walls

The door moved slowly.

Too slowly.

That was what made it terrifying.

A normal door closing would have been a sound.

This felt like a warning.

The old hinges groaned as the heavy wooden panel began sliding shut, separating us from the hidden room that contained decades of secrets.

Marcus reacted first.

He rushed forward and caught it with both hands before it closed completely.

“Someone triggered the mechanism,” he said.

My eyes moved around the room.

“From where?””

He looked toward the ceiling.

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

Someone above us had activated it.

Someone who knew this room existed.

Someone who knew we were here.

Isabella grabbed my hand.

Her fingers were cold.

“Daniel, we have to move.””

I looked at her.

“You said the person controlling Adrian is already here.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I don’t know.””

That answer terrified me more than any name could have.

Because Isabella Rossi was not someone who admitted uncertainty.

She spent her life researching, analyzing, planning.

She was the person who found patterns everyone else missed.

The fact that she didn’t know meant we were dealing with someone who had hidden from her.

Someone smarter.

Someone closer.

A sharp sound echoed from above.

A crash.

Then footsteps.

Heavy footsteps.

Someone was moving through the house.

Marcus looked at me.

“We need to get everyone out.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“Daniel.””

“If they wanted us dead, they would have attacked already.””

“That’s not comforting.””

“It’s not supposed to be.””

I looked at Isabella.

“They want something.””

She nodded.

“The documents.””

“The evidence.””

“The truth.””

She looked at the walls covered in photographs and notes.

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“They want something your father hid.””

I stared.

“What?””

She walked toward the old desk.

“My father spent years searching for it.””

I frowned.

“Your father?””

She stopped.

Then slowly turned.

“My family is connected to this too.””

The room became silent.

I felt something inside me shift.

Another secret.

Another piece missing.

“You knew?””

She looked away.

“Not everything.””

“But enough.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

Maybe because after everything, I wanted one person who had told me the whole truth.

Apparently, that person didn’t exist.

“How long?””

She swallowed.

“Before I met you.””

I stared at her.

“You married me while hiding this?””

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

“I married you because I loved you.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father asked me not to.””

My anger stopped.

“My father?””

She nodded.

“He knew my family had been connected to his secrets for generations.””

“What secrets?””

Before she could answer, the lights went out.

Again.

This time, nobody moved.

Because we knew.

The darkness was not an accident.

Someone was controlling it.

Marcus pulled out his flashlight.

A beam cut through the room.

“Everyone stay close.””

A sound came from the hallway.

A door opening.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Confident.

Not someone sneaking.

Someone who wanted us to hear.

I moved toward the entrance.

“Adrian.””

No answer.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came through the darkness.

“Daniel.””

My brother.

I stepped forward.

“You came for the documents.””

A quiet laugh.

“No.””

The voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Tired.

“I came because I knew you would eventually find the truth.””

The flashlight moved toward the hallway.

Nothing.

“Show yourself.””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m not the person you should be afraid of.””

I froze.

Because Adrian had never sounded like that.

Not smug.

Not arrogant.

Afraid.

“Where are you?””

“Trying to stop what I started.””

The words made Isabella step forward.

“Adrian?””

Silence.

Then:

“You’re alive.””

The pain in his voice was obvious.

And for a second, I saw something I never expected.

Regret.

Isabella looked at me.

Then toward the hallway.

“Why?””

Adrian answered softly.

“Because I failed.””

A shadow moved.

Then he stepped into the emergency lighting.

He looked different from earlier.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect suit was wrinkled.

His face was pale.

And he wasn’t holding a weapon.

He was holding a file.

Marcus immediately raised his gun.

Adrian stopped.

“Don’t.””

“You don’t get to give orders,” Marcus said.

Adrian looked at him.

“I know.””

Then he looked at me.

“Daniel.””

I hated that he still sounded like my brother.

“I need you to listen.””

I laughed bitterly.

“After everything?””

“I know.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You let me bury my wife.””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

“You tried to find the clock.””

“Yes.””

Every answer made me angrier.

But then he said:

“I also tried to stop them from killing her.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

“What?””

Adrian looked at Isabella.

“I never wanted you dead.””

She looked at him with pure hatred.

“You followed me.””

“Yes.””

“You chased my car.””

“Yes.””

“Your men forced me off the road.””

His face changed.

“No.””

The word came out immediately.

“I didn’t send them.””

Nobody spoke.

Adrian stepped closer.

“The night you crashed, I was trying to get you away from them.””

“Then why didn’t you help me?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because they had my daughter.””

The room froze.

Even Isabella.

Even me.

“What did you say?””

Adrian looked at me.

“My daughter.””

A thousand questions hit at once.

But before I could ask, a noise came from upstairs.

A scream.

Not loud.

But clear.

A child’s scream.

Emma.

I moved instantly.

Everyone followed.

We rushed through the hidden doorway and into the west corridor.

The house was no longer quiet.

Alarms were flashing.

Staff members were running.

Marcus shouted into his radio.

“Secure the main floor!””

But I only heard one thing.

Emma.

“Where is she?””

Sophia appeared at the end of the hallway.

Her face was white.

“Daniel.””

I ran toward her.

“Where’s Emma?””

Sophia looked behind her.

“I thought she was with you.””

The words hit like a punch.

“No.””

I turned.

“She was in the room.””

Isabella grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

A piece of paper slid across the floor.

Nobody had noticed it before.

Marcus picked it up.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

The handwriting was familiar.

Not Isabella’s.

Not my father’s.

Adrian’s.

The note contained only one sentence.

*If you want Emma back, bring the thing your father hid before midnight.*

Below it was a location.

A place I recognized immediately.

The old Rossi family chapel.

The place where my father had been buried.

I looked at Adrian.

He stared at the note.

“I didn’t write that.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Then who did?””

Adrian looked toward the dark hallway.

And for the first time in my life, I saw genuine terror in my brother’s face.

“Daniel…”

His voice dropped.

“The person who took Emma…”

A pause.

“Is the person who raised me.””

The entire house went silent.

Because suddenly the truth was no longer about Adrian.

It was about the person behind him.

The person who had shaped him.

Controlled him.

Used him.

And now had my daughter.

Adrian looked at the chapel location.

May you like

Then whispered the name he had spent his entire life trying to forget.

“My mother.””
