Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Room 714

I couldn't move.

Grandpa stood in the doorway.

His hands were resting at his sides.

He wasn't shouting.

He wasn't smiling.

He wasn't even angry.

That frightened me most of all.

"Grandpa?""

He looked at the laptop.

"Turn it off, Lily.""

I shook my head.

"Why did you hurt Mommy?""

He closed the study door.

"Come here, sweetheart.""

I stepped backward.

He stopped.

His expression changed.

"You're frightened of me.""

I nodded.

He looked toward the screen.

Then he pulled out a chair and sat down.

"Your mother was a difficult woman.""

I stared at him.

"Mommy was nice.""

"She was stubborn.""

"She loved me.""

"Of course she did.""

"Then why did you hurt her?""

Grandpa rubbed his forehead.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he began speaking.

"Your mother inherited a great deal of money from her grandmother. She also inherited shares in the family company.""

I knew about the money.

Martin had explained it.

"She wanted to put everything into a trust for you.""

Grandpa nodded.

"Yes. And I disagreed.""

"Why?""

"Because I believed the money should remain under family control.""

"But it's Mommy's.""

His jaw tightened.

"It was our family's.""

I looked at him.

"Mommy said it belonged to me.""

He gave a tired laugh.

"Your mother always believed she knew what was best.""

I moved closer to the door.

"Did you change her medicine?""

Grandpa looked down at his hands.

"I didn't want her dead.""

It wasn't an answer.

I remembered Daddy saying the same thing about wanting to hurt Vanessa.

But Daddy hadn't hurt her.

I looked at Grandpa.

"Did you?""

He slowly raised his eyes.

"I wanted her to sign the trust documents.""

"Mommy said no?""

"She refused.""

"Then why did you give her medicine?""

Grandpa stood.

"Because I thought if she became confused, she would stop fighting me.""

I stared at him.

"Did you make her sick?""

He didn't answer.

I began crying.

"Why?""

He stepped forward.

I ran toward the door.

He didn't chase me.

Instead, he said something that made me stop.

"Because I thought I was protecting the family.""

I turned.

"You're not protecting me.""

His face crumpled.

For the first time, he looked old.

Very old.

The doorbell rang.

Grandpa looked toward the hallway.

"Stay here.""

I shook my head.

He walked out.

I waited until his footsteps disappeared.

Then I ran toward the back stairs.

I knew the way to the kitchen.

I knew where the telephone was.

Daddy had taught me how to call emergency services.

My fingers trembled as I dialed.

"Emergency services. What's your emergency?""

I tried to speak.

But I was crying too hard.

"Sweetheart, can you tell me what's happening?""

"My grandpa hurt my mommy.""

The woman became very calm.

"What's your name?""

"Lily.""

"Are you somewhere safe, Lily?""

I looked toward the hallway.

"I don't know.""

"Can you tell me your address?""

I gave her the address.

"Good girl. Stay on the phone with me. Don't go near anyone who makes you uncomfortable.""

Then I heard a crash upstairs.

Grandpa shouted.

"Who gave you permission to come here?""

A man's voice answered.

"Richard Whitmore, you're under arrest.""

I began crying harder.

The operator reassured me.

"Help is on the way.""

Detective Collins entered the kitchen first.

Two officers followed.

Grandpa stood near the staircase.

His hands were raised.

"You're making a mistake," he said.

The detective looked at him.

"We have the recordings.""

Grandpa's face changed.

"Those files were supposed to be destroyed.""

The detective's expression hardened.

"Thank you for confirming their authenticity.""

Grandpa said nothing.

An officer approached him.

He was handcuffed.

Then he looked toward the kitchen.

His eyes found me.

"Lily.""

I stepped behind the counter.

He swallowed.

"I never wanted you to hear that.""

I looked at him.

"Mommy wanted me to know.""

He closed his eyes.

The officers led him away.

Daddy arrived twenty minutes later.

He ran through the front door.

"Lily!""

I rushed toward him.

He caught me.

"Are you hurt?""

I shook my head.

He held me tightly.

"Thank God.""

I buried my face against his chest.

"Grandpa hurt Mommy.""

Daddy closed his eyes.

"I know.""

"Why did he do it?""

He held my shoulders.

"Because he made a terrible choice.""

"Is he bad?""

Daddy looked toward the door.

"I think he did something unforgivable.""

I started crying again.

Daddy wiped my cheeks.

"Listen to me, sweetheart. You don't have to decide what to call him. You don't have to forgive him. And you don't have to see him again unless you want to.""

I nodded.

Then I remembered something.

"Daddy?""

"Yes?""

"I found another recording.""

He looked at me.

"Where?""

"In the computer.""

I showed him the file.

He watched the video.

His face became pale.

When the screen went black, he lowered the laptop.

"That's enough for tonight.""

"But Mommy was scared.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

"Can we find out everything?""

He kissed my forehead.

"Yes.""

The next morning, Detective Collins came to speak with us.

He brought Martin Hale.

They sat across from Daddy in the living room.

"The recordings are authentic," the detective began.

Daddy looked down.

"How much did Richard admit?""

"Enough to establish that he interfered with Eleanor's medical treatment.""

Martin opened a folder.

"We also found financial records showing that Richard attempted to gain control of Eleanor's trust.""

Daddy looked up.

"Was Vanessa involved?""

"Yes.""

The detective placed several printed messages on the table.

"Vanessa helped Richard obtain medical records and access the hospital system through Mark Ellis.""

Daddy stared at the messages.

"So they worked together.""

"Initially, yes.""

"What about the fake prescription?""

"We believe Richard arranged it. Mark helped deliver it.""

Daddy rubbed his face.

"And Vanessa?""

"She coordinated the financial arrangements.""

Martin added:

"She also created the false confession attributed to Eleanor.""

Daddy leaned back.

"How much money did they steal?""

Martin opened another document.

"Approximately two million dollars was diverted from accounts connected to the estate.""

Daddy stared.

"Two million?""

"Yes.""

"Where did it go?""

"Some was transferred into accounts controlled by Vanessa. The remainder appears to have been used to pay debts and purchase property.""

Daddy shook his head.

"All this for money?""

Detective Collins looked at him.

"Money was only part of it.""

He placed one final document on the table.

"Eleanor had discovered that the company was being used to conceal fraudulent transactions.""

Daddy looked up.

"What?""

"She was preparing to report the activity.""

Martin nodded.

"Richard was facing the possibility of losing control of the company.""

Daddy looked at the photograph of Mommy.

"So he silenced her.""

The detective didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"That's one of the central allegations we're investigating.""

Later that afternoon, Daddy took me to the cemetery.

It was the first time I had visited Mommy's grave since I was very small.

Snow covered the grass.

Daddy carried a bouquet of white roses.

I carried the little bell.

We stood beside the headstone.

*ELEANOR WHITMORE CARTER*

Beloved daughter, wife, and mother.

I knelt.

"Hi, Mommy.""

Daddy stood behind me.

I placed the bell beside the flowers.

"I found your messages.""

The wind moved through the trees.

"I know Grandpa hurt you.""

Daddy knelt beside me.

"I'm sorry, Eleanor," he whispered.

He placed the roses against the stone.

"I should have listened.""

I looked at him.

"Did you know Grandpa was bad?""

Daddy shook his head.

"No.""

"Did you know he changed Mommy's medicine?""

"No.""

"Then why did you go to the hospital twice?""

Daddy went completely still.

I watched his face.

He looked at the ground.

Then he finally answered.

"Because I found out Vanessa had lied to me.""

I frowned.

"What lie?""

Daddy took a breath.

"She told me your mother had signed a document changing the trust. I went back to the hospital to ask her about it.""

"Did you see Mommy?""

"Yes.""

"Was she awake?""

He nodded.

"She was frightened.""

"What did she say?""

Daddy's eyes filled.

"She asked me to take you home and never let Richard near you.""

I looked at the grave.

"Why didn't you listen?""

Daddy began crying.

"Because I was angry with her.""

I turned.

"Why?""

He wiped his face.

"Because she told me she wanted to leave me.""

I didn't understand.

"Mommy wanted to leave?""

"She wanted to take you somewhere safe. She said she couldn't trust anyone in the family.""

Daddy looked at the headstone.

"I thought she was accusing me of things I hadn't done.""

"Did you believe her?""

"Not enough.""

He lowered his head.

"That is something I'll regret for the rest of my life.""

I touched the bell.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

"Daddy, did you ever want Mommy to die?""

He looked at me.

"No.""

"Not even when you were angry?""

"Never.""

He held my hands.

"I made mistakes. I trusted the wrong people. I failed to protect her. But I never wanted her to die.""

I studied his face.

Then I nodded.

I wasn't ready to forgive him for everything.

But I believed him.

That evening, Detective Collins called.

Daddy answered.

"David Carter.""

He listened.

Then his expression changed.

"What do you mean?""

He stood.

"Where?""

I looked up.

The detective continued speaking.

Daddy's face became pale.

"Are you certain?""

A long silence followed.

Then he ended the call.

I stood.

"What happened?""

He looked at me.

"Vanessa has agreed to cooperate.""

"Why?""

"She wants a reduced sentence.""

"Does she know what happened to Mommy?""

Daddy nodded.

"She knows more than she's told us.""

He looked toward the window.

"She's agreed to reveal who actually administered the medication.""

I frowned.

"Wasn't it Grandpa?""

Daddy shook his head.

"Grandpa arranged it. Mark delivered it.""

"Then who gave it to Mommy?""

Daddy swallowed.

"Vanessa says she did.""

I felt cold.

"But she said she didn't.""

"I know.""

"Why did she lie?""

Daddy looked at me.

"Because she says someone else was in the room.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

Daddy didn't answer.

He received another message.

It was a photograph of an old hospital visitor log.

Three names had been circled.

Richard Whitmore.

Vanessa Carter.

And David Carter.

Beside my father's name was a handwritten note.

*Room 714 — 11:10 p.m.*

Daddy stared at it.

Then he whispered:

"That's impossible.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He turned the paper toward me.

Beneath his name was another line.

*Visitor admitted under special authorization: DR. MARTIN HALE.*

I looked toward the living room.

Martin had been sitting with us that afternoon.

The lawyer who had helped Grandpa.

The lawyer who had brought Mommy's documents.

The lawyer who had promised to protect me.

Daddy picked up his phone.

"Detective Collins?""

He paused.

"There's another person you need to investigate.""

The detective replied.

Daddy looked at me.

Then he said:

"Martin Hale.""

At 11:30 that night, someone knocked on our front door.

Daddy checked the security camera.

His face changed.

It was Martin.

He was standing outside in the snow.

Holding a white envelope.

Daddy opened the door but kept the security chain attached.

"Martin?""

The lawyer smiled faintly.

"David. I'm afraid we have a problem.""

"What problem?""

Martin looked past him.

His eyes found me.

Then he lifted the envelope.

"Your daughter has something that belongs to me.""

Daddy's voice became cold.

"What are you talking about?""

Martin's smile disappeared.

"The original recording.""

Daddy stared at him.

"Why do you want it?""

Martin leaned closer.

"Because I was the one who made sure Eleanor never reached the operating room.""

He paused.

"And if you want Lily to survive this investigation, you'll give me the bell.""

I clutched the little gold bell.

Daddy stepped in front of me.

"You're not coming anywhere near my daughter.""

Martin looked directly at me.

Then he said something that made Daddy's blood run cold.

"Ask your father why he signed the document that authorized Eleanor's final treatment.""

He turned and walked away.

Daddy slowly closed the door.

Then he looked at me.

For the first time since the investigation began, he seemed completely terrified.

Because the next document Detective Collins sent us contained my father's signature.

May you like

And beneath it were the words:

*I authorize the administration of the medication prescribed by Dr. Martin Hale.*
