Chapter 8: The Grandfather Who Knew Too Much

The detective took the photograph.

He studied the reflection for several seconds.

Then he looked at Daddy.

"Are you certain this is Richard Whitmore?""

Daddy shook his head.

"No.""

"Then why accuse him?""

"Because of the ring.""

Detective Collins placed the photograph on the table.

"What ring?""

Daddy explained what we had found at Grandpa's house.

The photograph.

The gold ring.

The note about Room 714.

The hospital locker.

When he finished, the detective leaned back.

"That's a serious allegation.""

"I know.""

"Your father-in-law has been cooperating with this investigation.""

Daddy looked exhausted.

"Then ask him about the ring.""

The detective stood.

"I will.""

He turned toward me.

"Lily, I need you to stay here with the officer.""

Daddy immediately looked at me.

"Don't worry, sweetheart. I'll be here.""

I nodded.

But I didn't like the way he looked at the photograph.

He seemed afraid.

Not of Vanessa.

Not of the police.

Of Grandpa.

Grandpa was waiting in the station lobby.

When Detective Collins approached, he stood.

"How is David?""

"We need to ask you some questions.""

Grandpa frowned.

"About what?""

The detective showed him the photograph.

Grandpa's expression didn't change immediately.

Then he noticed the ring.

He looked at his own hand.

The gold ring was still sitting inside an evidence bag.

"I've already explained that.""

"Mr. Whitmore, did you visit Eleanor at the hospital on the night she died?""

"No.""

"Are you certain?""

"Absolutely.""

The detective placed the photograph on the desk.

"Then who is this man?""

Grandpa studied it.

"I can't tell.""

"Look at the ring.""

Grandpa leaned closer.

Then he shook his head.

"That's not my ring.""

The detective's expression hardened.

"Your granddaughter identified it.""

"She's seven years old.""

"She recognized it.""

Grandpa became angry.

"Are you suggesting I hurt my own daughter?""

"I'm asking you to help us establish what happened.""

Grandpa took a deep breath.

Then he removed a small leather case from his pocket.

Inside was an old photograph.

It showed him at a family gathering.

He held it out.

"Look at my hand.""

The detective examined the photograph.

Grandpa was wearing a plain silver band.

"This is the ring I wore for decades. Eleanor gave me the gold ring after her wedding. I kept it in a box.""

"Where?""

"In my study.""

"Who had access?""

Grandpa looked down.

"David. Vanessa. The housekeeper.""

The detective made a note.

"Who else?""

Grandpa hesitated.

Then he said:

"Mark Ellis.""

Meanwhile, Daddy sat with me in the interview room.

He looked at the little gold bell.

"Your mother used to carry that everywhere.""

"Even when she went shopping?""

He smiled.

"Especially when she went shopping.""

I giggled.

He looked relieved to hear it.

Then he said something that made me stop smiling.

"Your mother once told me she was afraid of her father.""

I looked up.

"Grandpa?""

Daddy nodded.

"She said Richard had become controlling.""

"Grandpa is nice.""

"I know.""

"Why was Mommy afraid?""

Daddy looked toward the door.

"I don't know.""

He picked up the photograph again.

"She told me he had threatened to take you away if she didn't follow his instructions.""

I shook my head.

"Grandpa wouldn't do that.""

Daddy nodded.

"Maybe not.""

Then he leaned forward.

"But Lily, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Your mother didn't want us to move into this house.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"She said there were things in the house that shouldn't be there.""

"What things?""

He looked at the bell.

"Documents. Recordings. Things connected to her family.""

I remembered the key.

The little silver key marked 714.

"Mommy left something in Grandpa's house.""

Daddy looked at me.

"What?""

"A box.""

His expression changed.

"What was inside?""

"A photograph. A paper. And a recorder.""

He leaned closer.

"What did the recording say?""

I repeated the conversation between Mommy and Daddy.

Then I told him about the list of times.

Daddy's face became pale.

"Did Grandpa hear it?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Daddy closed his eyes.

"Then he knows.""

"Knows what?""

He didn't answer.

Detective Collins returned with a second officer.

"David, we're going to need you to come with us.""

Daddy stood.

"Where?""

"Back to the interview room.""

He looked at me.

"Stay here, sweetheart.""

I nodded.

The officer closed the door behind him.

A few minutes later, I heard voices outside.

Grandpa had arrived.

"Where is Lily?""

"She's safe.""

"I want to see her.""

"After we finish.""

Then Grandpa's voice became louder.

"She's my granddaughter!""

Detective Collins replied calmly.

"And she's a witness.""

I stood.

I walked toward the door.

Nobody noticed me until I opened it.

"Grandpa?""

He turned.

His face softened immediately.

"Lily.""

I ran to him.

He hugged me.

"Are you all right?""

I nodded.

Then I noticed something.

Grandpa's left hand was shaking.

"Are you cold?""

He smiled.

"No, sweetheart.""

I reached into my pocket.

I pulled out the little gold bell.

"Mommy's bell can make you feel better.""

Grandpa looked at it.

Then he smiled sadly.

"Your mother always believed that.""

He took the bell.

For a moment, he held it against his chest.

Then he gave it back.

"Keep it safe.""

The detective approached.

"Mr. Whitmore, we need to continue.""

Grandpa nodded.

But before he followed the detective, he leaned down and whispered something to me.

"Don't tell anyone about the second recording.""

I frowned.

"What second recording?""

His expression changed.

Then he stood.

And walked away.

I waited until the officer turned toward the reception desk.

Then I looked at the little bell.

Second recording?

Mommy had left one recorder in the wooden box.

But perhaps there was another.

I remembered the silver key.

The small number.

714.

And the photograph with the strange message.

I slipped my hand into my pocket and touched the key.

Grandpa had given it to me.

He hadn't asked for it back.

I walked toward the reception desk.

"Excuse me?""

The officer looked down.

"Yes, Lily?""

"Can I use the bathroom?""

He smiled.

"Of course. I'll show you.""

He led me down the corridor.

When we passed a small storage room, I noticed a familiar wooden box sitting on a chair.

It was the box from Grandpa's house.

I stopped.

"That's mine.""

The officer looked surprised.

"What?""

"Mommy's box.""

He glanced at it.

"Your grandfather brought it in earlier.""

I pointed toward the door.

"Can I see it?""

The officer hesitated.

Then he opened the door.

"Just for a moment.""

I approached the box.

The silver lock was still attached.

But something had changed.

There was a tiny piece of paper sticking out beneath the lid.

I pulled it free.

It was a note.

Written in my mother's handwriting.

*Lily, if you have found this, then someone has already told you that your grandfather is innocent.*

I read the sentence twice.

Then I turned the paper over.

*Don't believe them.*

My stomach tightened.

The officer noticed my expression.

"What's wrong?""

I looked at him.

"Can I keep this?""

He nodded.

I folded the paper and slipped it into my pocket.

That night, Grandpa took me home.

Daddy remained at the police station.

The detective said he needed to complete more interviews.

Grandpa was unusually quiet during the drive.

When we reached his house, he helped me upstairs.

"Get some sleep, sweetheart.""

I nodded.

He kissed my forehead.

"Goodnight.""

"Goodnight, Grandpa.""

He closed the door.

I waited.

Then I got out of bed.

I opened the wooden box.

I found the recorder.

I pressed the buttons.

Nothing happened.

I turned it over.

There was a small compartment beneath the battery cover.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

I had never noticed it before.

I took it out.

Then I found Grandpa's old laptop in the study.

I placed the card into the reader.

A single audio file appeared.

*ELEANOR_FINAL_2.*

I pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Mommy's voice.

"Richard, I know you're listening.""

My hands began to shake.

"I know what you did.""

A man's voice answered.

"You're making a terrible mistake, Eleanor.""

Mommy sounded frightened.

"Why did you tell Vanessa about the trust?""

"Because you were going to lose everything.""

"It belongs to Lily.""

"She's a child. She doesn't need twelve million dollars.""

"She's my daughter!""

There was a loud noise.

Then the man's voice became colder.

"You should have listened to me.""

Mommy began crying.

"Did you arrange the medication?""

Silence.

Then the man answered.

"I gave you a chance to cooperate.""

I stopped breathing.

Mommy whispered:

"You're my father.""

The man's reply was immediate.

"And you're my daughter. That's why I'm giving you one last chance.""

A door slammed.

Then Mommy's voice returned.

"If anything happens to me, protect Lily from Richard.""

The recording ended.

I sat frozen.

The laptop screen showed the audio file.

Then another file appeared.

*ROOM_714_CAMERA.*

I clicked it.

A video opened.

The picture was dark.

A hospital corridor.

A man entered Room 714.

He looked around.

Then he removed his coat.

I recognized the gold ring.

I recognized the face.

It was Grandpa.

He looked directly at the camera.

Then he walked toward the bed.

Mommy was lying there.

Her eyes were open.

She began shaking her head.

"Richard, please.""

Grandpa leaned over her.

And said:

"You should never have chosen David over your family.""

I covered my mouth.

Then he reached toward the bedside table.

He picked up a medicine bottle.

The screen went black.

A second later, a final message appeared.

*FILE DELETED.*

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Grandpa stood in the doorway.

His face was expressionless.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked at the laptop.

May you like

And said quietly:

"Where did you find that?""
