Chapter 5: The Investigator’s Secret

The name stayed in my head.

Thomas Vale.

A private investigator.

The man who was supposed to find answers about Evelyn’s disappearance.

The man who was supposed to help me understand how my first wife had vanished.

The man who had apparently been working with my current wife.

For twelve years.

I looked at the phone in the officer’s hand.

Then at Elise.

Then back at the message.

*You had one job, Elise. Keep Daniel away from the truth. If he knows about Evelyn, you know what happens next.*

My hands curled into fists.

“What happens next?””

Elise didn’t respond.

I stepped closer.

“What happens next, Elise?””

She looked exhausted.

Like she had been running from this moment for years.

“I don’t know.””

The answer made my anger explode.

“You don’t know?””

“I swear.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“I don’t expect you to believe anything I say anymore.””

That should have made me feel better.

It didn’t.

Because part of me wanted her to fight.

To explain.

To tell me she had been protecting me.

Anything.

But she just stood there.

Broken.

And somehow that was worse.

The officer looked at her.

“Mrs. Hall, you need to explain your connection to Thomas Vale.””

Elise looked down.

“He was hired to investigate Evelyn.””

“By who?””

She didn’t answer.

The officer’s tone became sharper.

“By who?””

Finally, she whispered:

“By Daniel.””

I froze.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“You hired him.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I never hired him.””

“You did.””

I shook my head.

“No. I would remember.””

“You wouldn’t.””

The words landed strangely.

Like a warning.

Not an accusation.

“What does that mean?””

Elise walked toward the dining table and sat down.

For the first time since I entered the house, she looked like she couldn’t stand anymore.

“You were not yourself after Evelyn disappeared.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about me like I wasn’t there.””

“I’m not.””

She looked up.

“I’m telling you what happened.””

I remembered that time.

The weeks after Evelyn vanished.

The police searches.

The interviews.

The sleepless nights.

The endless calls.

I remembered feeling like I was drowning.

But I remembered everything.

At least, I thought I did.

“I hired Thomas?”” I asked.

Elise nodded.

“You were convinced someone had taken her.””

“She was taken.””

“Yes.””

Her answer surprised me.

“You believe that?””

She looked away.

“I always believed that.””

“Then why did you hide the truth?””

She didn’t answer.

The officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Hall, we need to verify this.””

“How?””

He looked at the computer.

“The memory card.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

“There may be more footage.””

The room went quiet again.

The first video had shown Elise.

But there were dozens of files.

We had only watched one.

The officer clicked through the folders.

More dates appeared.

More nights.

More secrets.

My home had been watching me.

Recording things I never knew happened.

The next file opened.

The timestamp was from six years ago.

I immediately recognized the date.

The day Noah and Ethan were born.

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

The screen showed the hospital parking lot.

The footage was shaky.

But clear enough.

A man stood beside a black car.

Older.

Gray hair.

Holding a folder.

The officer leaned closer.

“That’s Thomas Vale.””

My breathing stopped.

The man who had helped investigate Evelyn.

The man who had texted my wife.

The man who had somehow been connected to my life long before I knew it.

The video continued.

Thomas opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Then someone approached him.

A woman.

My heart nearly stopped.

Elise.

Six years younger.

Standing in a hospital parking lot.

Talking to him.

I looked at my wife.

“You met him at the hospital?””

She didn’t answer.

The video audio was faint.

The officer increased the volume.

Thomas’s voice came through.

“You should have told him.””

Elise looked nervous.

“I couldn’t.””

“He has a right to know.””

“No.””

Her voice sounded desperate.

“If he knows, he’ll look for her.””

“And?””

“He’ll find out what happened.””

Thomas stared at her.

Then said something that made my blood run cold.

“He already has one child who lost a mother.””

Elise looked around.

“He can’t lose another family.””

I stepped back.

The room spun.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

The video continued.

Thomas handed her the folder.

“Keep this hidden.””

“For how long?””

“Until she comes back.””

Elise looked at him.

“And if she never does?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

The video ended.

I stared at the blank screen.

My mind was racing.

Six years ago.

The day my sons were born.

Thomas and Elise were already hiding something.

But there was another question.

One that felt even more terrifying.

“Who was he talking about?””

The officer looked at me.

“Who?””

I pointed at the screen.

“‘Until she comes back.’”

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

Again.

This time, it wasn’t Evelyn.

It was a number I didn’t recognize.

A message appeared.

*Stop watching the videos.*

My blood ran cold.

A second message arrived.

*You don’t understand what you’re uncovering.*

I looked around the room.

“How does someone know?””

The officer immediately reached for his radio.

“Everyone stay where you are.””

My eyes moved toward the windows.

The curtains were closed.

The doors were locked.

But someone knew.

Someone was watching.

Just like the camera above the stairs.

My phone buzzed again.

A third message.

This one was different.

Shorter.

More personal.

*Ask Elise why she was at the hospital the night Evelyn disappeared.*

I slowly looked up.

“Elise.””

She saw my expression.

And she knew.

“What did you get?””

I turned the phone toward her.

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You knew.””

She stood immediately.

“No.””

“You knew this person was watching.””

“No, Daniel.””

“Then why do you look terrified?””

She stepped closer.

“Because they found us.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I have been trying to protect you.””

“From who?””

She looked toward the staircase.

Toward where our sons had disappeared.

And whispered:

“From the person who made Evelyn disappear.””

The officer looked at her.

“Who?””

Elise’s lips trembled.

Then she said a name.

A name that made the entire room freeze.

“Your father.””

I stared at her.

“My father died fifteen years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then what are you saying?””

She looked at me.

And there was no fear in her eyes anymore.

Only guilt.

“Daniel…”

She whispered.

“The man you buried wasn’t your father.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Before she could answer, a loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

The officers ran toward the staircase.

I followed.

My feet moved before my mind could catch up.

When I reached the top floor, I saw Ethan standing outside his bedroom.

Frozen.

His door was open.

The room was a mess.

Drawers pulled out.

Toys scattered everywhere.

And on his bed was a single envelope.

My name written across the front.

*Daniel Hall.*

I picked it up.

My hands shaking.

Inside was one photograph.

A photograph of Evelyn.

Alive.

Standing outside our house.

Holding something in her arms.

Something that made me forget how to breathe.

Because beside her stood a little girl.

A little girl who looked exactly like me.

May you like

And written on the back of the photograph were six words:

*She is your daughter, Daniel.*
