Chapter 8: The Child Who Was Never Meant to Inherit
The warehouse became a battlefield of flashing police lights, shouted commands, and shattered glass.
Detective Collins ordered officers to secure the exits.
Maya rushed toward Thomas.
Her hands shook as she cut through the restraints.
"Dad.""
Thomas looked at her.
For several seconds, neither could speak.
Then he reached for her face.
"My little girl.""
Maya collapsed against his chest.
She had imagined this moment a thousand times.
In some versions, she was angry.
In others, she screamed at him for abandoning her.
But now that he was finally there, all she could do was hold him.
"I thought you were dead.""
Thomas closed his eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
"Why didn't you come home?""
"I couldn't.""
"That isn't an answer.""
"I know.""
He held her tighter.
"I tried to reach you. More than once.""
Maya pulled away.
"Who stopped you?""
Thomas looked toward the warehouse entrance.
"Edward.""
Arthur approached.
"Where's my mother?""
Thomas's expression changed.
"She was taken through the northern loading bay.""
Arthur turned toward Collins.
"Did anyone see her?""
An officer approached.
"Sir, we found a vehicle leaving the property. It was a dark utility van.""
Collins immediately ordered a pursuit.
Arthur grabbed Thomas's arm.
"Where will Edward take her?""
Thomas shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"You worked with him. You know how he operates.""
"I knew how he operated eighteen years ago.""
Arthur looked toward the empty chair where his mother had been sitting.
"Then tell me what happened.""
Thomas glanced at Maya.
"Not here.""
Arthur's voice hardened.
"Everyone keeps saying that. I'm finished waiting.""
Thomas nodded.
"Then listen carefully.""
At 6:15 a.m., they gathered in a private conference room at the police station.
Thomas sat with a blanket around his shoulders.
Maya remained beside him.
Arthur paced near the window.
Detective Collins placed a recorder on the table.
"Mr. Collins, start from the beginning.""
Thomas took a slow breath.
"Eighteen years ago, Richard discovered that Edward had been selling confidential shipping schedules to a criminal organization operating through several international ports.""
Arthur stopped pacing.
"What did they want?""
"Access to cargo manifests, restricted shipments, and the ability to move containers without triggering the company's internal security protocols.""
"Illegal shipments?""
"Among other things.""
Thomas looked at Arthur.
"Your father discovered the operation while investigating a missing container in Rotterdam. The container was supposed to hold industrial machinery. Instead, it contained financial records belonging to several influential people.""
Arthur frowned.
"Why would Edward risk everything for that?""
"Because the records could be used to blackmail people. Politicians. Bankers.
Judges. Corporate executives.""
Collins leaned forward.
"Do you know who was involved?""
Thomas shook his head.
"Richard had a list. He believed the original documents were hidden inside the Hawthorne Star.""
Arthur nodded.
"The sapphire.""
"Yes. The trust instrument wasn't the only thing hidden inside it. There was also a storage code.""
Maya looked at her father.
"Then why didn't you tell anyone?""
"Because Edward had already infiltrated the security department.""
Thomas paused.
"He had access to the cameras, the guards, and the emergency protocols. He knew where every family member would be during the yacht trip.""
Arthur stared.
"And my mother?""
Thomas looked down.
"Your mother discovered the truth first.""
He explained that Elizabeth Hawthorne had been reviewing several family trust documents when she noticed discrepancies in the ownership records.
She confronted Richard.
Together, they discovered that Edward had created a secret network of shell companies.
The network had been operating for years.
Then Elizabeth disappeared.
The family was told she had died in a car accident.
But Thomas had never believed the explanation.
"She contacted me two months later," he continued.
"She was alive. She said she had found proof that Edward had been using Arthur's inheritance as collateral for his criminal operation.""
Arthur looked stunned.
"My inheritance?""
Thomas nodded.
"Your father's entire estate had been placed into a complex trust. Edward wanted control of it. But there was a problem.""
"What problem?""
Thomas looked directly at him.
"You weren't supposed to be the heir.""
Arthur went still.
"What?""
Thomas reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
It was a birth certificate.
The original version.
Arthur examined it.
His name was there.
His father's name was there.
But the mother's name was different.
Not Elizabeth Hawthorne.
Margaret Collins.
Arthur slowly raised his eyes.
"Who is Margaret Collins?""
Thomas looked at Maya.
"Your father's younger sister.""
Maya's face drained of color.
Arthur stared at the document.
"You're telling me my mother wasn't my biological mother?""
Thomas nodded.
"Margaret gave birth to you. She died shortly afterward.""
Arthur sat down.
"Why?""
"Complications during childbirth.""
"And Elizabeth?""
"She was married to Richard. She couldn't have children. She adopted you and raised you as her own.""
Arthur stared at the paper.
Every childhood memory suddenly seemed to shift.
The family portraits.
The birthdays.
The stories about his mother's pregnancy.
The hospital photographs.
"Did she know?""
"Elizabeth loved you as her own son.""
"That's not what I asked.""
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"Yes. She knew.""
Arthur looked at Maya.
"Then why would Edward say I wasn't supposed to inherit?""
Thomas answered.
"Because the Hawthorne family trust had a clause. If Richard's biological line ended, the estate would pass to another branch of the family.""
Arthur frowned.
"Which branch?""
Thomas hesitated.
"Margaret's daughter.""
Maya looked up sharply.
"What?""
Thomas nodded.
"You.""
The room went silent.
Arthur turned toward Maya.
For a moment, he couldn't find his voice.
Maya stared at her father.
"You're saying I'm related to the Hawthorne family?""
"Your mother was Margaret Collins. Richard was her brother.""
Arthur looked back at the birth certificate.
Maya was his cousin.
His aunt's daughter.
The person who had saved his grandmother's life and stopped his bride from escaping was also the person who had a legal claim to the entire Hawthorne fortune.
Maya stood abruptly.
"No.""
Thomas reached for her hand.
"Maya—"
"No. I didn't come here for money.""
"I know.""
"I didn't know any of this.""
"I know.""
Maya turned toward Arthur.
"I had no idea.""
Arthur stared at her.
Then he looked at the document again.
"Edward knew.""
Thomas nodded.
"That's why he wanted the original trust agreement destroyed.""
Collins examined the papers.
"Who currently controls the estate?""
"Arthur, under the revised trust documents," Thomas replied.
"But the original agreement gives Maya the right to challenge that transfer.""
Arthur looked at Maya.
"Do you want the inheritance?""
She shook her head.
"I want the truth.""
Arthur nodded slowly.
"So do I.""
At 7:05 a.m., Detective Collins received an urgent call.
The vehicle carrying Elizabeth had been located outside an abandoned private clinic in Queens.
But the building was empty.
Officers found traces of blood near the entrance.
They also discovered a broken pair of glasses.
Arthur recognized them immediately.
They belonged to his mother.
He picked them up with trembling hands.
"Is she alive?""
Collins looked uncomfortable.
"We don't know.""
Thomas examined the glasses.
Then he turned them over.
A tiny piece of paper had been tucked beneath one of the frames.
Maya carefully removed it.
There was a handwritten message.
*THE SECOND BIRTH CERTIFICATE IS IN THE CHAPEL. ASK ELEANOR WHO SIGNED IT.*
Arthur stared.
"What chapel?""
Thomas answered.
"The old family chapel.""
Arthur looked at Maya.
"At the estate?""
She nodded.
"Behind the stained-glass wall.""
Arthur remembered his childhood.
The chapel had been closed after his father's death.
Nobody had been allowed inside.
Not even the estate staff.
"Why would my mother leave something there?""
Thomas's expression darkened.
"Because that's where she and Richard were married.""
Arthur turned toward him.
"Elizabeth and my father?""
Thomas shook his head.
"No.""
He looked at the document in Arthur's hands.
"Your biological parents.""
Arthur felt the ground disappear beneath him.
Thomas continued.
"Margaret and Richard were married in that chapel. The family never announced it publicly because your grandfather opposed the relationship.""
Arthur's voice was barely audible.
"Then Elizabeth...""
"She was your aunt. She adopted you after Margaret died.""
Maya sat down.
Arthur looked at her.
The family he had known his entire life was dissolving into unfamiliar pieces.
Then Detective Collins received another message.
He read it once.
Then again.
His face went pale.
"What?"" Arthur demanded.
Collins looked up.
"Edward Blackwood has filed an emergency petition with the court.""
"On what grounds?""
The detective hesitated.
"He's claiming that Arthur Hawthorne is not the lawful beneficiary of the estate.""
Arthur stared.
"And who is he naming instead?""
Collins looked toward Maya.
"Your cousin.""
Maya closed her eyes.
May you like
Edward had finally found a way to turn the two people who had survived his conspiracy against each other.
And somewhere, Elizabeth was still missing.
