Chapter 2: The Key Beneath the Veil
The wedding ceremony was officially canceled at 11:43 a.m.
By noon, ambulances, police officers, and private security personnel had surrounded the Hawthorne estate.
The guests were escorted into the reception hall while investigators began documenting the sanctuary.
Arthur refused to leave his grandmother.
Eleanor was taken to a private hospital, accompanied by Daniel and two members of the family security team.
Before the ambulance doors closed, she caught Arthur's wrist.
"Don't let her near the vault," she whispered.
Arthur leaned closer.
"Grandmother, what is inside it?""
Eleanor's eyes moved toward the police officers.
"Not here.""
Then she squeezed his hand.
"Trust no one who tells you your father died without leaving questions.""
The ambulance doors shut.
Arthur remained standing in the courtyard long after the vehicle disappeared.
His wedding suit was wrinkled. His boutonniere had fallen off. A thin streak of blood from Maya's injured lip had somehow transferred onto his white shirt when he had tried to help her.
Daniel approached.
"Arthur, we need to talk.""
"About what?""
"The vault.""
Arthur turned.
"You heard Eleanor.""
"I heard her. That's why I'm worried.""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Your father changed the vault's access protocol three weeks before he died.""
Arthur frowned.
"What?""
"I was there when he met with the estate attorney. He instructed them to prepare a second security key.""
"Why wasn't I told?""
"Because your father specifically requested that you not be involved.""
Arthur stared at him.
"My father trusted me.""
"I know.""
"Then why would he hide something from me?""
Daniel had no answer.
A police officer approached them.
"Mr. Hawthorne?""
Arthur turned.
"I'm Detective Collins. We need your statement.""
"Not until I know what's happening with my grandmother.""
"She's receiving treatment. The doctors believe her injuries are serious but not immediately life-threatening.""
Arthur exhaled.
Then Collins continued.
"We also need to question the woman who intervened.""
Arthur glanced toward the building.
"The maid?""
"Yes. She's currently in the security office.""
Arthur looked surprised.
"Why is she being questioned? She stopped the attack.""
"That's exactly what we're trying to establish.""
Daniel frowned.
"Are you suggesting she participated?""
"I'm suggesting we investigate everyone who had access to the scene.""
Arthur looked toward the main entrance.
"Then I'll speak to her first.""
Inside the estate, Maya sat in a small security room.
A nurse had cleaned the cut on her lip and wrapped an ice pack in a towel for her swollen jaw.
She had removed her white apron.
Her black uniform was still stained with blood.
On the table lay her body camera, her identification documents, and a folded piece of paper.
When Arthur entered, Maya stood.
"Mr. Hawthorne.""
"Please, sit.""
She hesitated.
Then she sat again.
Arthur pulled out the chair opposite her.
For several seconds, he simply looked at her.
"You saved my grandmother.""
Maya shrugged.
"Anyone should have stopped her.""
"Not everyone would have.""
"That's not an excuse.""
Arthur glanced at her injured face.
"She hit you.""
"Yes.""
"She could have seriously injured you.""
"She tried.""
Arthur lowered his eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
Maya studied him.
"Why?""
"For hiring you into this mess.""
A faint, tired smile appeared on her face.
"You didn't hire me to be attacked.""
Arthur almost smiled.
Then he noticed the folded paper.
"What is that?""
Maya followed his gaze.
"Something I found this morning.""
She slid it across the table.
Arthur unfolded it.
The paper contained a handwritten list.
Three names.
A date.
And a sentence written in block capitals:
*THE ORIGINAL WILL MUST NEVER LEAVE THE VAULT.*
Arthur looked up.
"Where did you find this?""
"In the bridal preparation room. It was tucked beneath the lining of a jewelry case.""
"Did you know what it meant?""
"No.""
"Then why didn't you give it to security?""
"Because the name at the bottom was yours.""
Arthur looked down.
Beneath the warning were two initials.
A.H.
His own initials.
But the handwriting was unfamiliar.
"Who else has seen this?""
"Nobody.""
Arthur folded the paper.
"Detective Collins needs to see it.""
Maya nodded.
Before he could stand, she spoke again.
"Mr. Hawthorne?""
"Yes?""
"There's something you should know about Isabella.""
Arthur's jaw tightened.
"Go on.""
"She received a phone call at approximately 9:30 this morning. She was in the bridal suite. I was delivering a garment bag.""
"What did she say?""
"She told the caller that the old woman would be wearing the necklace before noon.""
Arthur felt his stomach tighten.
"Anything else?""
Maya hesitated.
"She said, 'Once I have the key, the original documents are mine.''"
Arthur stared at her.
"Did you recognize the voice on the other end?""
"No. But I heard Isabella say a name.""
"What name?""
Maya looked directly at him.
"Richard.""
Arthur stopped breathing.
His father had been dead for two years.
At 1:15 p.m., Detective Collins returned with a report from the initial search.
Isabella's handbag contained three passports.
One American.
One British.
One bearing a different surname.
There were also two prepaid mobile phones, a large quantity of foreign currency, and a boarding pass for a private flight departing from Teterboro Airport that evening.
The destination was Zurich.
The passenger name was not Isabella Vance.
It was Claire Whitmore.
Arthur examined the documents.
"Who is Claire Whitmore?""
Collins shook his head.
"We're still checking.""
"What about the car?""
"Recovered at the eastern gate. The driver claims he was hired through an intermediary.""
"Name?""
"Marcus Bell.""
Arthur recognized it.
Marcus had worked for the Hawthorne estate for eleven years.
He had been responsible for coordinating transport during family events.
"Where is he?""
"Missing.""
Arthur slammed the documents onto the table.
"How does a man disappear from my estate on the morning of my wedding?""
Collins remained calm.
"That's what we're investigating.""
Daniel walked in carrying a tablet.
"Arthur, you need to see this.""
He placed it on the table.
The screen displayed a series of financial transfers.
Several payments had been made from an offshore account to a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands.
The first payment was dated eighteen months earlier.
The final one had been made two days before the wedding.
The total amount exceeded twelve million dollars.
Arthur examined the recipient information.
"Who's receiving this money?""
Daniel enlarged the screen.
"An account registered to a company called Vance Holdings.""
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"Isabella's family?""
"That's what I thought.""
Daniel swiped to another page.
"But the company wasn't established by her father.""
"Who established it?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he turned the tablet toward Arthur.
The company registration listed one controlling shareholder.
*Richard Hawthorne.*
Arthur stood so abruptly that his chair scraped backward.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel looked troubled.
"The company was created four years ago.""
"My father died two years ago.""
"I know.""
"Then explain how his name is on a company that continued receiving money after his death.""
Daniel said nothing.
Arthur picked up the tablet again.
A final document appeared.
It was a scanned copy of a transfer authorization.
His father's signature was at the bottom.
But the date was six months after the funeral.
Arthur felt cold.
Someone had been using his father's identity.
Someone with access to the family finances.
Someone who knew the vault's secrets.
And Isabella had been communicating with a person named Richard.
A knock sounded.
Detective Collins entered.
"We've completed the preliminary examination of the stolen necklace.""
Arthur turned.
"Is it damaged?""
"No. But we discovered something unusual.""
Collins placed a photograph on the table.
It showed the back of the Hawthorne Star.
A small circular compartment had been opened beneath the central sapphire.
Inside it was a tiny metal cylinder.
Arthur stared.
"I've never seen that before.""
"Neither had the jeweler who authenticated it last year," Collins replied.
"Apparently, the compartment was sealed.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"What's inside?""
Collins carefully opened the evidence photograph on his tablet.
The cylinder contained a folded strip of paper.
On it was a sequence of numbers and a short handwritten message.
Arthur recognized the handwriting immediately.
His father's.
The message contained only seven words.
*ARTHUR, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I AM ALIVE.*
The room went completely still.
Arthur's fingers began to tremble.
He read the sentence again.
Then a third time.
"No.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Arthur...""
"No. My father is dead.""
Detective Collins spoke carefully.
"Mr. Hawthorne, we have not verified the document's authenticity.""
Arthur grabbed the photograph.
"Then verify it!""
"We will.""
"Now!""
Collins nodded.
But before anyone could say another word, Arthur's phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One message.
No greeting.
No explanation.
Just a photograph.
It showed a man sitting in a dark room, wearing a gray suit.
The man's face was partially obscured.
But Arthur recognized the watch on his wrist.
It had belonged to his father.
May you like
Underneath the photograph was a sentence.
*STOP LOOKING FOR YOUR FATHER, OR YOUR GRANDMOTHER WILL BE THE NEXT ONE TO DISAPPEAR.*
