Chapter 9: The Last Betrayal
The truth had a strange way of arriving.
Not like a storm.
Not like an explosion.
More like a door slowly opening.
And behind every door was another room filled with secrets.
Ethan’s father.
A man I had met only twice.
A man everyone described as a businessman.
A man who died five years ago.
Apparently, death was becoming a family tradition.
“So he’s alive too?””
My voice sounded empty.
My father nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Did you know?””
“No.””
This time, I believed him.
Because Ethan looked genuinely broken.
“My father was supposed to be dead.””
My father studied him.
“Your father was careful.””
Ethan sat down.
For the first time since I knew him, he looked lost.
Not calculating.
Not confident.
Lost.
“What was he doing?””
My father answered.
“Waiting.””
“For what?””
“For you.””
I felt a chill.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
My father looked at the documents.
“Your father wanted control of the company. But he couldn’t take it directly.””
“Because of Blue Lantern.””
“Yes.””
“Because of me.””
“Yes.””
I looked down.
My entire life suddenly felt like a battlefield I never knew existed.
Ethan’s voice was quiet.
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at him.
“About what?””
“About the plan.””
“What plan?””
He swallowed.
“My father told me to marry you because it would bring the families together.””
The room went silent.
I felt the words before I understood them.
“You knew that before we married?””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“Ethan.””
“I swear I didn’t know the reason.””
“But you knew there was a reason.””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
That hurt more than I expected.
Because even if he hadn’t known everything…
he had known enough.
“You still chose me.””
“Yes.””
“Knowing your family wanted something.””
“Yes.””
I nodded slowly.
“Thank you.””
His eyes lifted.
“For what?””
“For finally telling the truth.””
Ethan looked devastated.
“I loved you.””
I looked at him.
“I believe you did.””
That surprised him.
“But love doesn’t erase what you allowed.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“We need to focus.””
She placed another file on the table.
“The offshore company is the immediate threat.””
My father looked at it.
“He’s trying to force a legal takeover.””
“How?””
Rebecca pointed.
“By proving Ethan controlled the company through marriage.””
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if the marriage was manipulated from the beginning.””
I looked at Ethan.
His face went pale.
“They’re going to claim the marriage was part of a business arrangement.””
“Yes.””
“So they can challenge ownership.””
“Yes.””
I laughed once.
The absurdity was overwhelming.
“My entire marriage was evidence.””
Nobody answered.
Because it was possible.
That was the worst part.
Then Ethan stood.
“I need to call my father.””
My father grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Ethan looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because he wants you scared.””
“He’s my father.””
“He stopped being a father when he used you as a weapon.””
That sentence destroyed something in Ethan.
He sat back down.
For years, I thought Ethan’s greatest weakness was arrogance.
I was wrong.
It was his need for approval.
He had spent his entire life trying to impress a man who saw him as a tool.
Rebecca checked her phone.
“We have movement.””
“What kind?””
“The offshore company filed emergency claims.””
“Where?””
“Thailand.””
I stood.
“Why here?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because they want to stop you from leaving.””
My blood went cold.
“They’re trying to trap me.””
“Yes.””
My father looked at me.
“You have to leave immediately.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“No?””
I shook my head.
“I spent my entire life running from a story I didn’t know.””
I looked at the documents.
“I’m done running.””
Rebecca smiled slightly.
“That’s what I hoped you’d say.””
A notification appeared.
A message from Sterling.
*Final evidence package available.*
I opened it.
There was one file.
One recording.
The title:
*Conversation between Ethan Morgan and Thomas Morgan.*
My hands froze.
“Why would there be a conversation between them?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Because Ethan recorded it.””
I turned.
Ethan looked confused.
“I did?””
“You don’t remember?””
“No.””
Rebecca opened the file.
A voice played.
Ethan’s voice.
Younger.
Nervous.
Then another voice.
Older.
Cold.
His father.
And then the sentence that changed everything.
“You marry Claire, you gain access.””
A pause.
Ethan’s voice:
“What if I love her?””
His father laughed.
“Then make yourself stop.””
I closed my eyes.
The recording continued.
“She is not a person in this plan. She is the key.””
My breathing stopped.
Because I knew.
I knew the worst part was coming.
Then his father said:
“And once she activates Blue Lantern…”
The recording crackled.
The next words were barely audible.
But everyone heard them.
“Take everything.””
The room went silent.
Ethan looked like he had been punched.
My father closed his eyes.
Rebecca turned pale.
Then the final line played.
A line nobody expected.
A line that changed the entire story.
Because it wasn’t Ethan’s father speaking.
It was Ethan.
His younger voice.
Terrified.
Whispering:
“I can’t do that to her.””
The recording ended.
I looked at Ethan.
He looked back at me.
For the first time, I didn’t see the man who betrayed me.
I saw the man who had been trapped too.
Then my phone rang.
A number from the United States.
Rebecca answered.
Her face changed instantly.
“What?””
She listened.
Then looked at me.
“Claire…”
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“The person who gave Sterling the final evidence…”
She swallowed.
“…was your mother.””
I froze.
“My mother is dead.””
Rebecca looked at me.
“No.””
A silence.
May you like
Then:
“She’s been alive this entire time.””
