Chapter 2: The Lie She Was Told to Tell

Marcus led Nia toward the sofa.

“Sit down, sweetheart.””

Nia sat.

Ava immediately sat beside her.

Caleb remained standing near Marcus, watching Vanessa with an expression that was unusually serious for a ten-year-old.

Vanessa stayed near the dining table.

“This is ridiculous,” she said.

“You’re interrogating a child because she has a bruise.””

Marcus turned.

“I’m questioning my daughter because she’s afraid to tell me how she got it.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“She’s fourteen, Marcus. Everything is a tragedy to her.””

Nia stared at the carpet.

Marcus noticed.

He knelt in front of her again.

“Forget everyone else. Just tell me the truth.””

Nia whispered, “I don't want you to be angry.””

“I’m not angry with you.””

“You might be.””

“Never.””

Vanessa made an impatient noise.

Marcus didn't acknowledge it.

“Nia, did you fall?””

Nia shook her head.

“Did Caleb hurt you?””

Caleb immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Did Ava?””

Ava's eyes widened.

“No, Dad.””

“Then who?””

Nia's fingers tightened around the hem of her shirt.

Vanessa spoke before she could answer.

“She probably caught it on the cabinet.””

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

“Did I ask you?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“What?””

“I asked Nia.””

The room went silent.

Marcus reached carefully toward Nia's collar.

“Can I see it?””

She nodded.

He moved the fabric aside just enough to see the bruise.

His jaw tightened.

It was large and dark purple, stretching across the top of her shoulder.

Near it was a thin scratch, already beginning to heal.

Marcus had seen injuries before.

Construction sites had taught him what accidents looked like.

This didn't look like an ordinary accident.

He stood.

“When did this happen?””

Nia hesitated.

“This afternoon.””

Marcus looked at the cake.

“The cake?””

Nia nodded.

Vanessa immediately said, “She was reaching for it after I told her to wait.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And then?””

“She lost her balance.””

Caleb suddenly spoke.

“She didn't.””

Vanessa snapped her head toward him.

“What did you say?””

Caleb swallowed.

But he didn't take it back.

“She didn't fall.””

Marcus crouched slightly so he was eye level with him.

“Caleb, tell me exactly what happened.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Caleb, go upstairs.””

“No.””

The word came from the boy so quietly that everyone heard it.

Vanessa stared at him.

“What?””

Caleb looked at his father.

“You told me not to talk about it.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Talk about what?””

Vanessa's face lost some of its color.

“Caleb is confused.””

“No, I'm not.””

“Caleb,” Vanessa warned.

The boy pointed toward Nia.

“You grabbed her.””

Nia closed her eyes.

Marcus didn't move.

“What?””

Caleb's voice shook.

“When she reached for the cake, you grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“That's a lie.””

Caleb shook his head.

“I saw you.””

“You saw nothing.””

“I did!””

Marcus stepped between them.

“Vanessa.””

She stopped.

His voice was dangerously calm.

“Do not raise your voice at my son.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

“This is unbelievable.””

Ava finally spoke.

“I saw it too.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Ava.””

Ava squeezed Nia's hand.

“She wasn't lying.””

Marcus looked at his children.

Two witnesses.

Both afraid.

Both contradicting Vanessa.

He turned toward Nia.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Nia's eyes filled.

“Because she said you'd blame me.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“Who said that?””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“She said if I made trouble again, you'd send me away.””

Marcus stared at his wife.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never said that.””

Nia's voice cracked.

“You did.””

“No, I didn't.””

“You did.””

“Nia, stop being dramatic.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was trying to discipline her.””

“Discipline?””

“She was told not to touch the cake.””

“She reached for a piece of her own birthday cake.””

“She wasn't supposed to yet.””

Marcus glanced at the cake.

Then at the bruise.

Then at Nia.

His voice dropped.

“You hurt her because she reached for cake?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time, she seemed to realize that her explanation wasn't helping.

“It wasn't like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

“I grabbed her for one second.””

Nia's eyes lowered.

Marcus looked at the scratch.

“One second?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“She pulled away.””

Marcus's hands curled into fists.

Ava moved closer to Nia.

Caleb stood beside his father.

The family photograph was still waiting on the tripod.

The timer screen showed *00:14*.

Marcus noticed it.

He walked over and turned the phone off.

“No picture.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“No picture.””

“This is supposed to be a family celebration.””

Marcus looked directly at her.

“Exactly.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

Marcus returned to Nia.

“Go upstairs with Ava.””

Nia looked frightened.

“Am I in trouble?””

Marcus's expression broke.

“No, sweetheart.””

He gently touched her hair.

“You're not the one in trouble.””

Nia nodded.

She and Ava began walking toward the stairs.

Caleb started after them.

Vanessa suddenly said, “Caleb, you stay here.””

He stopped.

Marcus looked at his son.

“You can go.””

Caleb hurried upstairs.

Vanessa waited until the children disappeared.

Then she turned toward Marcus.

“You are seriously choosing them over me?””

Marcus stared at her.

“I’m choosing my daughter.””

“She has always manipulated you.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“She was afraid of you.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“You're going to destroy this marriage over a bruise?””

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

“No.””

He looked back at her.

“I’m questioning a marriage that allowed my daughter to hide bruises from me.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You don't know the whole story.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then tell me.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Marcus waited.

Finally, Vanessa whispered, “You really want the truth?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

May you like

And when she spoke again, her voice was almost a whisper.

“If you find out why Nia has been so quiet, you may not want to keep her in this house either.””
