Chapter 8: My Brother's Secret
I looked at Ethan.
Then at the photograph.
Then back at Ethan.
He stood across the consultation room, staring at the screen as if it had become a weapon pointed at his chest.
“Tell me that's not you,” I said.
He didn't answer.
“Ethan.””
His face had gone gray.
Claire began to cry again.
Helen quietly asked the security officer to remain nearby.
I barely noticed.
“Tell me that's not you.””
Ethan lowered his head.
“Mark, I can explain.””
I felt my hands begin to shake.
“You're in a photograph with Elena Ward outside a hospital, and Sophie has just told me you're her biological father.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
The room fell silent.
For several seconds, I couldn't process the answer.
My brother.
My older brother.
The man who had stood beside me at my wedding.
The man who had helped me carry Maya into the house after she was born.
The man who had spent years calling me his best friend.
He was Sophie's biological father.
And he had watched me search for answers without telling me the truth.
“How long have you known?”” I asked.
Ethan's eyes filled with tears.
“Since before she was born.””
I took a step toward him.
“You knew Sophie was your daughter?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe she was mine?””
“I didn't know Claire had told you that.””
I stared at him.
“You knew she was being hidden from the family. You knew Mom had signed documents. You knew Dad was involved. And you never once thought to tell me that the child was yours?””
Ethan covered his face.
“I was twenty-nine. Elena and I had a relationship, but it wasn't a stable one. We were young, and I made mistakes.””
“You were twenty-nine years old.””
“I know.””
“You were old enough to know you had a child.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
He lowered his hands.
“Because I was afraid.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone in this family has been afraid for eleven years.””
Ethan flinched.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
“When Sophie was born, I thought I could fix things. Elena and I had been arguing. She said she didn't want me involved. Then Claire came to me and said Elena was struggling and the baby needed a stable home.””
“And you agreed to let Claire take her?””
“I thought it would be temporary.””
I stared at him.
“Those are Claire's exact words.””
He looked away.
“Because we all believed it.””
“Did you sign anything?””
“Yes.””
The answer came so quietly that it took me a second to understand it.
“What did you sign?””
“A statement saying I wasn't prepared to take responsibility for a child.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“Was that true?””
“At the time, I didn't think I could raise a baby. I was working two jobs. I was behind on rent. Elena was furious with me, and I didn't know how to make things right.””
“So you gave her up.””
“I thought I was agreeing to temporary care.””
“Did you tell Mom and Dad you were the father?””
“Yes.””
“And they helped conceal it.””
Ethan nodded.
I felt a strange emptiness spread through me.
My entire family had been involved in a secret that had shaped two children's lives.
My mother had signed statements.
My father had used his connections.
Claire had taken Sophie.
And Ethan had known the truth.
“What happened to Elena?”” I asked.
Ethan's eyes filled.
“I don't know.””
“You were her partner.””
“I know.””
“You fathered her child.””
“I know.””
“Then how can you not know?””
He looked at me helplessly.
“After Sophie was placed at Newbridge, Elena disappeared. Claire told me she had moved away. Dad told me she had chosen to leave. I tried to find her once, but nobody would give me information.””
“Did you contact the police?””
“No.””
“Did you contact a lawyer?””
“No.””
“Did you go to Newbridge?””
Ethan shook his head.
“Not after the first visit.””
I felt sick.
“You went there?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Shortly after Sophie was born.””
“What did you see?””
He stared at the floor.
“I saw a little girl in a nursery. Claire said it was Sophie. She told me I could visit, but that it would confuse the child if I acted like her father.””
I closed my eyes.
“So you walked away.””
Ethan began to cry.
“Yes.””
The word was a confession.
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted to tell him that nothing could excuse what he had done.
But beneath my anger was a memory of my brother at Maya's hospital bed, holding her tiny hand and promising to protect her.
The man in that memory and the man sitting in front of me seemed impossible to reconcile.
I looked at Claire.
“Did you know Ethan was Sophie's father when you married me?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“And you married me anyway?””
“I loved you.””
“Was that why you chose me? Because you knew I would be a convenient father for a child whose real father had refused to claim her?””
“No!””
“Then explain it.””
Claire pressed both hands against her face.
“My father said the child needed a family. Ethan refused to take responsibility. Elena was gone. The court needed a stable placement, and I was the only person willing to provide one.””
“Except you weren't willing to provide the truth.””
“I thought I could tell you someday.””
“When?””
“After we were married. After Maya was born. After things settled down.””
I stared at her.
“You had ten years.””
“I know.””
“You had twelve years of marriage.””
“I know.””
“You watched me love Maya as though she were my only child while keeping the existence of Sophie from me.””
Claire's voice broke.
“I didn't know how to tell you.””
I shook my head.
“You didn't want to tell me.””
She didn't deny it.
Helen interrupted before the confrontation could escalate further.
“Mr. Bennett, we need to focus on locating Sophie. We have information suggesting she may currently be at Newbridge Family Residence. The authorities have been notified.””
I forced myself to breathe.
“Then we go there.””
Helen shook her head.
“Please don't attempt to remove her yourself. The authorities need to verify her location and ensure she is safe.””
“She's fifteen years old, alone in a place where adults have been manipulating her for years.””
“I understand your concern. We are acting on it.””
My phone rang.
The screen showed Sophie's number.
I answered immediately.
“Sophie?””
“Dad?””
Her voice was trembling.
“I'm here.””
“Where are you?””
“At Newbridge.””
“Are you safe?””
“I think so.””
“Are there adults with you?””
“There's a woman at the desk. She says I have to wait for Claire.””
My stomach tightened.
“Did she tell you why?””
“She said Claire is coming to collect me.””
I looked at Claire.
She had heard enough to understand.
Her eyes widened.
“No,” she whispered.
I turned away from her.
“Sophie, listen carefully. Don't leave with anyone until the authorities have confirmed who they are and explained your options. If you feel unsafe, go to the reception desk and ask them to contact emergency services.””
“Are you coming?””
“I want to see you. But I'm going to make sure we do this safely.””
She began to cry.
“I don't want to stay here.””
“I know.””
“They said I was difficult. They said I was ungrateful. They said my real family didn't want me.””
I closed my eyes.
“You are not unwanted.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I'm looking for you right now.””
There was a small, broken sound on the other end of the line.
Then Sophie whispered, “I need to tell you something.””
“Tell me.””
“I found the original placement file.””
“What does it say?””
“It says Mom—Claire—wasn't supposed to be my guardian.””
I glanced at Helen.
“What do you mean?””
“She was supposed to be a temporary caregiver. The paperwork says I was meant to go back to Elena after she finished treatment.””
My heart began to pound.
“Did you see anything about Elena's location?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
Sophie hesitated.
Then she said, “There's a letter from her. It says she never abandoned me.””
I gripped the phone.
“What else?””
“She said she kept trying to find me. She wrote letters to Newbridge. She sent them to Claire. She asked to see me.””
I looked at Claire.
She had gone completely still.
“Sophie,” I said, “do you have those letters?””
“Yes. They're in the file.””
“Can you tell the staff about them? Don't take anything or put yourself at risk. Just tell them where the documents are.””
“Okay.””
Then she whispered, “Dad?””
“Yes?””
“There's something else.””
“What is it?””
“The letter says Mom was never supposed to be my mother.””
I swallowed.
“Claire?””
“No. Elena.””
The room went silent.
Sophie continued.
“Elena says she didn't give me up. She says someone told her I had been adopted by a family in another state. She says she spent years looking for me.””
I looked at Ethan.
He was crying openly now.
“Sophie, do you know who told her that?””
“No. But there's a name on the bottom of the letter.””
“What name?””
“Your grandmother's.””
My mother.
I felt the world tilt.
Sophie continued.
“She wrote that Grandma told her you had died, Dad. She said Grandma promised to help her find you, but then she stopped answering her letters.””
I stared at my mother’s name as Sophie read it aloud.
Then the call crackled.
“Sophie?””
“Dad, I think someone is coming.””
“Who?””
“I don't know. The woman at the desk just went into the office.””
“Stay where you are. Don't leave with anyone until the authorities arrive.””
“Okay.””
The line went dead.
I looked at Helen.
“We need to move now.””
Helen was already speaking with the hospital's safeguarding team, relaying the information to the authorities.
Claire stood abruptly.
“I have to go there.””
“No,” I said.
“She needs me.””
“She asked you not to find her.””
“She doesn't understand!””
I stared at her.
“She understands enough to ask for help.””
Claire began to cry again.
“I raised her.””
“You concealed her identity.””
“I loved her.””
“You made her believe she was unwanted.””
She shook her head violently.
“I never said that.””
“You told her I was dead. You told her Elena was gone. You told her the people who loved her couldn't be trusted.””
Claire covered her face.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
Ethan rose from his chair.
“Stop saying that.””
Claire looked at him.
He was trembling.
“You keep using protection as an excuse for everything you did. But you weren't protecting Sophie. You were protecting the life you wanted.””
Claire recoiled.
For a moment, the room was silent.
Then Helen returned to the table.
“The authorities have confirmed that officers are on their way to Newbridge. They're also reviewing the historical records.””
I nodded.
“Thank you.””
My phone vibrated again.
A message from Sophie.
*I found Elena's address in the file.*
Then another.
*She lives twenty minutes from here.*
I stared at the screen.
For eleven years, Elena had apparently been alive, searching for her daughter.
For eleven years, Sophie had believed she was unwanted.
And for eleven years, I had been living a life constructed around a lie.
I typed:
*Don't go anywhere alone. Let the authorities help you. We'll find Elena together.*
Her reply came almost instantly.
*Dad, there's a photograph here. It's Elena with a man.*
I waited.
Then the photograph arrived.
It showed Elena standing beside a younger Ethan outside a hospital.
On the back, in faded handwriting, were the words:
*Sophie and her father. The day he promised he would come back.*
I looked at my brother.
He had promised his daughter he would return.
And he had never come.
Then Sophie sent one final message.
*Dad, I think Claire knows Elena has been looking for me.*
A second later, my phone rang again.
It was my mother.
I answered.
“Mom?””
Her voice was barely recognizable.
“Mark, you need to listen to me.””
“What now?””
“Claire has just left the house.””
“Where is she going?””
My mother began to cry.
“She said she was going to Newbridge.””
I looked at Helen.
May you like
Then I heard my mother whisper the words that made every hair on my arms stand up.
“She said if Sophie reached Elena before she did, all of us would lose everything.””
