Chapter 8: The Father I Never Knew
The name on the screen burned into my mind.
*Alexander Vale.*
My biological father.
Alive.
Coming for me.
I stared at those words until they stopped making sense.
A person I had never met.
A person I had spent my entire life believing was nothing more than a name on a document.
Now he was the center of every secret.
Every lie.
Every missing piece of my life.
“No.””
Richard’s voice was barely a whisper.
Everyone looked at him.
Not me.
Him.
That was when I understood.
Richard wasn’t afraid of Alexander because he was a stranger.
He was afraid because he knew him.
I turned slowly.
“Who is he?””
Richard didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
The word slipped out.
And for a moment, I hated myself for still calling him that.
But twelve years of habit didn’t disappear in one night.
Richard looked at me.
“He was my closest friend.””
The room went still.
“My partner.””
Elena looked away.
“A partner who betrayed everyone.””
Richard’s face tightened.
I looked between them.
“You knew my father?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
He looked broken.
“I thought he was dead.””
Elena shook her head.
“You wanted to believe that.””
Richard looked at her.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“I know exactly what happened.””
Her voice became colder.
“You saw what he was capable of.””
The tension between them was impossible to ignore.
I stepped forward.
“Someone explain.””
Nobody spoke.
So I raised my voice.
“Explain!””
The entire hallway froze.
I had spent my whole life being the quiet one.
The grateful one.
The child who never complained because he knew how lucky he was.
But I was tired.
Tired of being the last person to know.
Ethan looked at me.
Then at Richard.
“Tell him.””
Richard closed his eyes.
For several seconds, I thought he would refuse again.
Then he finally spoke.
“Alexander Vale and I built Whitmore Corporation together.””
I listened.
Every word felt like another crack in the foundation beneath me.
“He was brilliant,” Richard continued.
“He understood business better than anyone I had ever met.””
“But?””
Richard looked at the screen.
“But he believed the company belonged to him.””
Elena crossed her arms.
“He believed everything belonged to him.””
Richard nodded.
“After your grandfather died, Alexander expected control of the Vale shares.””
“My shares,” I said.
Richard looked at me.
“Yes.””
“But they went to me.””
“Yes.””
“And that’s why he wanted me gone.””
The silence confirmed it.
Elena stepped closer.
“Alexander didn’t see you as his son.””
My chest tightened.
“What did he see me as?””
Her expression broke.
“A key.””
The answer hurt.
More than I expected.
Because somewhere deep inside, I had always hoped my biological father had a reason.
Maybe he left because he was forced to.
Maybe he was searching.
Maybe he loved me.
But a key?
An inheritance?
A piece of property?
That was all I was to him?
Richard continued.
“When Alexander learned Elena was pregnant, he started making plans.””
“What kind of plans?””
Richard looked at the floor.
“Plans to control the trust.””
Elena’s hands shook.
“He wanted me to sign over my rights before Noah was born.””
“And you refused.””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Because I knew what he wanted.””
I swallowed.
“What happened after that?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Your adoption.””
I looked at him.
“What about it?””
He hesitated.
“The adoption wasn’t random.””
My heart sank.
“What do you mean?””
Ethan looked at Richard.
Richard didn’t stop him.
“You were placed with the Whitmore family because Richard was trying to hide you.””
I stared.
“Hide me?””
“Yes.””
“From Alexander?””
Richard nodded.
“He had people searching for you.””
The hallway suddenly felt smaller.
“So you adopted me to protect me.””
Richard looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you hide the truth?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I was afraid.””
The answer was painfully familiar.
Everyone was afraid.
But I was the one who paid for it.
“Afraid of what?””
Richard looked at Elena.
“Afraid that if Alexander found out where you were, he would come back.””
Elena’s voice was quiet.
“He did.””
Nobody argued.
Because he had.
The screen had proven it.
A message from a man who had been waiting years.
I looked at the photograph of Alexander.
The image showed only a name.
But somehow, I already felt like I knew him.
And I hated that.
A man could be my father by blood.
But he had never been there when I needed him.
A man could raise me and still keep me trapped inside a lie.
I didn’t know who deserved the title anymore.
“Where is he?””
Everyone looked at me.
Richard frowned.
“What?””
“Where is Alexander?””
“Noah—”
“I need to know.””
Elena stepped closer.
“You need to be careful.””
“I’m tired of being protected.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
But they were true.
“I was protected from my mother.””
I looked at Richard.
“I was protected from my past.””
Then at Elena.
“I was protected from the truth.””
I shook my head.
“And somehow, every time someone protected me, I lost something.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan quietly said:
“He’s probably not far.””
Richard turned.
“What makes you say that?””
Ethan pointed toward the security screen.
“The message wasn’t just a threat.””
Everyone looked.
“What do you mean?””
“He wanted us to see it.””
Ethan walked closer.
“He wanted Noah to know he exists.””
Elena nodded slowly.
“He’s forcing us to respond.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He wants me to come to him.””
Nobody answered.
Because they knew.
He did.
The lights flickered again.
This time, the security system didn’t shut down.
Instead, every phone in the room rang at the same time.
Nobody moved.
The sound was terrifying.
One by one, everyone looked down.
Unknown number.
Richard answered first.
“Hello?””
A voice came through.
Clear.
Calm.
Confident.
A voice that sounded nothing like a villain.
“Richard.””
Everyone froze.
Richard’s face lost all color.
“Alexander.””
My heart started racing.
The man on the phone laughed softly.
“So you finally told him.””
Richard tightened his grip on the phone.
“You stay away from him.””
A pause.
Then Alexander replied:
“You still think you have the right to tell me what to do with my son?””
My entire body went cold.
My son.
I stepped closer.
Richard looked at me.
“Noah, don’t.””
But I reached for the phone.
I needed to hear him.
I needed to know.
Richard hesitated.
Then handed it over.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then the voice spoke.
“Noah?””
I froze.
Hearing my name from him felt wrong.
Too familiar.
Too easy.
“You’re my father?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
I looked at Elena.
She was crying silently.
“What do you want?””
The voice softened.
“I want to meet you.””
“Why?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Because there are things your mother never told you.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What things?””
Alexander laughed quietly.
“Things about who really betrayed you.””
Everyone looked at Elena.
She went pale.
“Noah, don’t listen.””
Alexander heard her.
“Still controlling the conversation, Elena?””
Her face changed.
The pain.
The anger.
The history between them.
All of it returned.
I whispered:
“What did she do?””
Nobody answered.
Alexander spoke.
“She didn’t tell you why she disappeared.””
My heart pounded.
“What?””
“She didn’t tell you who she trusted.””
The room went silent.
“She didn’t tell you that the person who handed you over…”
A pause.
My breathing stopped.
“…was someone inside the Whitmore family.””
I looked around the room.
At Richard.
At Margaret.
At Ethan.
At Elena.
Someone had given me away.
Someone close.
Someone I trusted.
Alexander’s voice lowered.
“Come meet me, Noah.””
I didn’t answer.
“Then you’ll finally know the truth.””
The call ended.
Nobody spoke.
I turned toward Elena.
“Is it true?””
She looked devastated.
“Noah…”
“Is it true that someone in this family gave me to them?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The answer crushed me.
Richard stepped forward.
“Noah, listen—”
I stepped back.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Elena whispered:
“It was the person who signed your adoption papers.””
My blood ran cold.
Because there were only three signatures on those papers.
Mine.
Richard’s.
And one more.
The name I had never paid attention to.
The name at the bottom of the page.
Margaret Whitmore.
My adoptive mother.
May you like
I turned toward her.
And she looked away.
