Chapter 14: The Last Ghost Trident

We reached the surface six hours later.

But the world waiting for us was already different.

The recovery vessel was empty.

No crew.

No communication.

No explanation.

Only one message left on the main console.

*SEAVIEW ACADEMY IS COMPROMISED.*

The place where I had spent my career.

The place where generations of officers learned honor.

Was now the center of the greatest betrayal in Navy history.

We returned under emergency conditions.

Nobody spoke during the flight back.

Because there was nothing left to say.

The truth had become too large.

When we arrived at Seaview, the academy looked normal.

That was the most frightening part.

Students walked across the grounds.

Families visited.

Flags moved in the wind.

A perfect picture.

A perfect lie.

Elena Voss met us at the entrance.

She looked relieved.

Then she saw Carter.

Her expression changed.

“You know.””

Carter nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“And you remember?””

I nodded.

Her face fell.

“Then it’s worse than we thought.””

I followed her gaze.

“What?””

She handed me a tablet.

A classified intelligence report.

The first page contained a photograph.

A meeting.

Twenty-four years earlier.

The people in the room were familiar.

Thomas Vale.

Jonathan Pierce.

Daniel Cross.

And me.

But there was one more person.

Someone sitting at the center.

Someone I had forgotten.

I stared.

“No.””

Pierce looked over my shoulder.

His face changed.

“Impossible.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

For the first time, I believed him.

The photograph showed a woman.

Older now.

But I recognized her.

Commander Elena Voss.

Except twenty-four years earlier.

She had a different name.

A different identity.

“What is this?””

Voss went silent.

Everyone looked at her.

Finally, she whispered:

“I was there.””

The room changed.

Carter stepped forward.

“You were part of Black Current?””

She nodded.

“I was.””

My voice was cold.

“Why hide it?””

“Because I was the one who found the original files.””

“The files about the Ghost Trident?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

She looked at me.

“And I found the person who created it.””

I already knew.

But I needed to hear it.

“Who?””

Her eyes moved toward me.

“You.””

Nobody spoke.

Again.

The same answer.

Again.

But this time, something was different.

Because I remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

The original Ghost Trident was not created to control information.

It was created because I believed someone needed to protect the truth when governments could not.

I believed good intentions justified secrecy.

And secrecy became power.

Power became corruption.

And corruption became the monster I created.

Voss continued.

“You realized what it had become.””

I nodded slowly.

“I tried to destroy it.””

“Yes.””

“But I couldn’t.””

“No.””

“Because too many people depended on it.””

She nodded.

“So you created a final protocol.””

My throat tightened.

“The memory protocol.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Carter.

“And Michael?””

Voss looked down.

“The hardest decision.””

Carter said nothing.

“You erased yourself.””

She looked at him.

“You chose to become the person Richard needed you to be.””

Michael smiled sadly.

“I remember now.””

Voss looked surprised.

“What?””

Carter touched his chest.

“The original memories.””

Everyone went quiet.

“I wasn’t replaced.””

He looked at me.

“I was divided.””

The explanation was almost impossible.

But somehow it made sense.

The man who stood before me was not fake.

He was the result of a decision.

A sacrifice.

A man built from the pieces of another.

Then the academy alarms sounded.

Everyone froze.

Voss checked the tablet.

Her face went pale.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“The Ghost Trident network has activated.””

Pierce stepped forward.

“How?””

Voss looked toward the academy.

“Because the final command has been issued.””

I felt cold.

“By who?””

She turned the tablet around.

A single authorization code appeared.

The signature.

My own.

I whispered:

“No.””

The screen displayed the message.

*PROTOCOL ONE: RESTORE THE ORIGINAL ARCHITECT.*

The lights across Seaview Academy shut off.

Every screen turned black.

Then one image appeared.

A black trident.

May you like

And beneath it:

*WELCOME HOME, ADMIRAL CALLAHAN.*
