Chapter 7: The Recording
The headlights stopped at the gate.
Marcus stared into the darkness.
The engine remained running.
No one got out.
Peter pressed one hand against his bleeding shoulder.
“Take Ava inside.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Who is it?””
“I don't know.””
“You said he found us.””
Peter swallowed.
“I said he found the evidence.””
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
Tall.
Dark coat.
Face hidden beneath the shadow of the gate light.
Marcus immediately pulled Ava closer.
Grace moved behind him.
Vanessa backed farther into the house.
The man raised both hands.
“Marcus.””
Marcus knew that voice.
Not well.
But enough.
He had heard it at business meetings.
At the hospital.
At his wife's funeral.
His eyes narrowed.
“Dr. Reed?””
The man stepped into the light.
Ethan Reed looked older than Marcus remembered.
Exhausted.
Terrified.
His tie was loosened, his shirt stained with rain.
“Don't shoot.””
Marcus gave a bitter laugh.
“I don't have a gun.””
“You should.””
“Why are you here?””
Dr. Reed looked at Peter.
Then Vanessa.
Then Ava.
“I came because I know what's on that card.””
Marcus's fingers closed around the tiny memory card.
“Then you're exactly who I need to talk to.””
Reed took another step.
“No. You're not listening.””
“I've been listening all night.””
“Then listen now.””
His voice cracked.
“Your daughter is in danger because of that card.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“She was already in danger.””
“I know.””
“Your name came up.””
Reed stopped.
“What?””
“Vanessa said you helped her poison my wife.””
Reed looked at Vanessa.
Her eyes widened.
“I never said that.””
Marcus didn't move.
“Did you?””
Reed slowly shook his head.
“No.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
Reed glanced at the dark tree line.
“Not here.””
Marcus looked toward the road.
“Why?””
“Because if we're still standing here in another minute, none of us will be alive.””
A sound came from the gate.
Metal scraping metal.
Peter looked up.
“He's back.””
Reed turned sharply.
“Who?””
Peter pointed.
“The same man who shot me.””
Reed's face went pale.
Marcus didn't hesitate.
“Everybody inside.””
They rushed through the front door.
Grace pulled Ava toward the stairs.
Marcus followed.
Vanessa remained in the foyer.
Reed closed the door behind them and locked it.
Then another gunshot cracked through the night.
The glass beside the front door exploded.
Ava screamed.
Grace dropped to the floor with her.
Marcus grabbed the nearest table and shoved it against the door.
“Stay down!””
Another shot.
Then another.
The alarm panel began screaming.
Vanessa covered her ears.
Reed looked around.
“Is there another exit?””
“The kitchen.””
“Too exposed.””
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
“The wine cellar.””
Reed stared at him.
“Does it connect to the outside?””
“Underground passage.””
“Then that's where we're going.””
Peter struggled to his feet.
Marcus grabbed him.
“You're coming.””
Peter shook his head.
“No.””
“You know the passage.””
“Yes.””
“Then move.””
Peter looked at Vanessa.
She was frozen.
Marcus noticed.
“You're coming too.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Marcus, please.””
“You're not staying behind.””
“I can't go down there.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because that's where she died.””
Marcus stopped.
“Who?””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Your wife.””
Reed closed his eyes.
“Marcus, we don't have time.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What does she mean?””
Reed lowered his voice.
“She isn't talking about the nursery.””
Marcus's chest tightened.
“Then where?””
“The passage.””
Ava suddenly looked up.
“The secret room?””
Everyone went silent.
Marcus stared at his daughter.
“What secret room?””
Ava looked confused.
“Mama showed me.””
Vanessa's face went white.
Marcus crouched.
“Showed you what?””
Ava pointed toward the corridor.
“The room under the stairs.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She didn't move.
“Open it.””
Vanessa whispered, “No.””
“Open it.””
She shook her head.
“I can't.””
Marcus grabbed her wrist.
“You're going to.””
Peter stepped in.
“Don't.””
Marcus turned.
“Why?””
Peter's voice was low.
“Because if she opens it, you'll finally know.””
“That's the point.””
Peter looked at Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
Then she walked toward the staircase.
They followed.
At the bottom step, Vanessa reached behind a wooden panel.
She pressed something.
A click sounded beneath the floor.
A narrow section of wall shifted.
Behind it was a steel door.
Marcus stared.
“How long has this been here?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Peter did.
“Since before your wife died.””
Marcus opened the door.
Cold air rushed past them.
Ava clung to Grace.
Reed looked down the narrow passage.
“She's still using it.””
“Who?””
Reed looked at Vanessa.
“Her.””
Vanessa whispered, “Don't.””
Marcus turned.
“Who?””
Reed didn't answer.
He stepped into the passage.
Marcus followed.
The walls were concrete.
Old pipes ran overhead.
Every few feet, small lights flickered.
They reached a steel room at the end.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a desk.
A chair.
A monitor.
And a single cassette recorder.
Marcus stared.
“What is this?””
Reed walked to the desk.
“A surveillance room.””
“For what?””
“Your wife.””
Marcus felt his stomach twist.
“You watched her?””
“No.””
Reed looked at Vanessa.
“She did.””
Vanessa dropped her eyes.
Marcus turned toward her.
“You recorded my wife?””
“She was recording me.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That I was taking your money.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“That's all?””
“No.””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“She knew about the company.””
“The one in Ava's name?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because the company belonged to your wife first.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“She created it before Ava was born.””
Reed nodded.
“She used it to hide money from someone.””
“Who?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She wouldn't tell me.””
Marcus looked around the room.
Then he saw a monitor with a red light.
“What is that?””
Reed's face tightened.
“Security backup.””
Marcus pressed the power button.
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then an image appeared.
His wife.
Alive.
Sitting in this exact room.
Marcus couldn't breathe.
She looked directly into the camera.
Her face was bruised.
Her voice was quiet.
“If you're watching this, Marcus, something has happened to me.””
Marcus stepped closer.
Ava looked at the screen.
“Mama.””
The recording continued.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
His wife's eyes moved nervously toward the door.
“Vanessa is not the person you think she is.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus didn't look at her.
“She has been taking money from the company.””
The recording showed his wife holding a folder.
“But that isn't why I'm leaving.””
Marcus's hands began to shake.
“She found out that Ava is not your only heir.””
Marcus stared.
Reed looked down.
“What does that mean?”” Marcus whispered.
The recording continued.
“There is another child.””
Marcus's face went completely blank.
Vanessa began crying.
“No.””
His wife looked into the camera.
“And that child belongs to—”
The recording distorted.
Static swallowed the final words.
Marcus slammed his hand against the monitor.
“No!””
He rewound it.
The same distortion.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a second recording started automatically.
His wife's face appeared once more.
This time, she was standing.
Someone was behind her.
A man's silhouette.
She turned.
“Please don't.””
The figure grabbed her.
The camera shook.
Marcus stared.
Vanessa began sobbing.
Reed whispered, “Stop watching.””
But Marcus couldn't.
His wife fought.
The man dragged her toward the doorway.
She looked straight at the camera.
“MARCUS!””
Then the image went black.
Marcus turned slowly.
“Who was that?””
No one answered.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You know.””
She shook her head.
“Tell me.””
“I can't.””
Marcus grabbed her arm.
“Tell me!””
“Marcus!””
“I buried my wife!””
Vanessa broke down.
“She was trying to protect Ava!””
“From whom?””
Vanessa looked toward Reed.
Reed looked back at her.
Then Peter spoke.
“From me.””
Marcus turned.
Peter was standing in the doorway.
His face had gone pale.
“What?””
Peter slowly reached inside his coat.
Marcus tensed.
Peter pulled out an old photograph.
He handed it to Marcus.
Marcus looked down.
His wife was standing beside a newborn baby.
The baby had Marcus's eyes.
But the woman holding the child was not his wife.
It was Vanessa.
On the back of the photograph, written in his wife's handwriting, were seven words:
*This is Vanessa's secret, not mine.*
Marcus stared at it.
Then Ava's voice came softly from behind him.
“Daddy…”
He turned.
Ava was looking at the photograph.
Her tiny face had gone pale.
“She told me about the baby.””
Marcus's heart stopped.
“What baby?””
Ava looked at Vanessa.
Then whispered:
“The baby she said you weren't allowed to know about.””
Vanessa suddenly ran.
She shoved past Grace and raced toward the hidden passage.
Marcus chased her.
“Vanessa!””
She reached the steel door.
Marcus caught her wrist.
She spun around, tears streaming down her face.
“Let me go!””
“Who was the baby?””
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she whispered the words that shattered the last lie holding their marriage together.
“Your wife didn't have another child.””
Marcus froze.
Vanessa's voice broke.
“I did.””
She pulled free.
“And he's still alive.””
From the far end of the passage came the sound of a child crying.
A boy.
May you like
And then a man's voice whispered from the darkness:
“Vanessa… it's time to tell him everything.””
