Chapter 1: The Scream

The scream hit Marcus before he even closed the front door.

Not a cry.

Not the startled whimper of a child who had fallen.

A scream.

High, desperate, terrified.

“Ava!””

Marcus dropped his keys.

They struck the marble floor and skidded beneath the console table as he ran toward the living room, his dress shoes slipping against the polished wood.

Another scream tore through the house.

“Dad!””

His chest tightened.

He rounded the corner and stopped dead.

Ava was on the floor beside the coffee table, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her little pink cardigan was twisted at one shoulder, and one of her shoes had come loose.

Grace, the maid, was kneeling beside her.

She was holding Ava’s hand.

Marcus saw only that.

He saw a crying child.

He saw Grace’s hand around her wrist.

And his mind made the rest of the picture for him.

“Get away from my daughter!””

Marcus crossed the room in two strides and shoved Grace backward.

She stumbled into the edge of the sofa.

“Mr. Marcus—”

“Don’t touch her!””

Grace threw both hands into the air.

“I wasn’t hurting her!””

Marcus dropped to one knee and pulled Ava behind him.

“Ava, come here.””

She scrambled into his arms.

He wrapped one hand around the back of her head and looked over her shoulder at Grace.

“What did you do?””

Grace’s face had gone white.

“Nothing, sir. I swear. I was trying to help her.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Help her?””

“Yes!””

Grace’s voice cracked.

“She was crying, and I—”

Footsteps thundered from upstairs.

Vanessa appeared at the top of the staircase, one hand pressed dramatically against her chest.

“What happened?””

Her voice was breathless.

She hurried down the steps, looking from Marcus to Ava to Grace.

“Oh my God.””

Vanessa rushed toward them.

“Ava!””

Marcus stood immediately, shielding his daughter with his body.

“Stay back.””

Vanessa froze.

Her eyes widened.

“Marcus, I heard screaming. I came as fast as I could.””

Grace shook her head.

“No. That’s not what happened.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“What are you talking about?””

“I was helping Ava.””

Vanessa stared at Grace for a second.

Then she looked at Marcus with trembling eyes.

“I caught her hurting Ava.””

The room went silent.

Marcus slowly turned his head.

“You what?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I came downstairs and saw Grace pulling Ava by the arm.””

Grace’s mouth fell open.

“That’s a lie.””

“Marcus, she was hurting her.””

“I was saving her!””

Grace’s voice broke as tears filled her eyes.

“I heard Ava screaming and ran into the room. She was trying to get away from—”

“She attacked my daughter!””

Vanessa’s voice suddenly rose above hers.

Grace flinched.

Marcus looked down at Ava.

His daughter was shaking.

He brushed a strand of hair away from her wet cheek.

“Ava.””

She looked up.

“Did Grace hurt you?””

Ava’s lips parted, but no words came.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Sweetheart, tell your father the truth.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Something about the sentence bothered him.

Not the words.

The way she said them.

Soft.

Careful.

Almost rehearsed.

But anger was already burning too hot inside him.

He looked at Grace again.

“You’ve been with this family for six years.””

Grace nodded quickly.

“Yes, sir.””

“And you know what Ava means to me.””

“I do.””

“Then why were your hands on her?””

Grace stared at him in disbelief.

“Because she needed me.””

Vanessa let out a shaky breath.

“She needs to stop lying.””

Grace turned toward her.

“Mrs. Vanessa, please.””

“Please what?””

“I know what I saw.””

“No, you don’t.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened for half a second.

Then the tears returned.

“I walked in and she was dragging Ava toward the staircase.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“The staircase?””

“Yes.””

Grace shook her head violently.

“That isn’t true.””

“You expect me to believe you?”” Vanessa snapped.

“I expect you to tell the truth.””

Marcus raised his hand.

“Enough.””

Both women fell silent.

He looked at Ava.

Her little fingers were clenched into the fabric of his shirt.

“Baby.””

Ava pressed her face against him.

“It’s okay,” Marcus whispered.

“Daddy’s here.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus, I know this looks bad, but I was trying to protect her.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

His eyes had fallen to Ava’s arm.

There was a red mark just above her elbow.

His expression changed.

Grace saw it.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

Grace’s tears spilled over.

“That mark wasn’t from me.””

Vanessa immediately spoke.

“Of course she’d say that.””

“I didn’t do it!””

Grace pointed toward Ava.

“She grabbed my hand because she was scared. I was trying to stop her from falling.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Then why was she screaming?””

Grace opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Marcus looked from one woman to the other.

The house suddenly felt too quiet.

Then Ava moved.

She slowly lifted her head from Marcus’s chest.

Her cheeks were still wet.

Her breathing was uneven.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked down.

“What is it?””

Ava stared past him.

Not at Grace.

Not at Vanessa.

Toward the hallway.

Toward the staircase.

Her tiny hand rose.

One trembling finger pointed behind him.

Marcus followed her gaze.

At the end of the hall, the security monitor was still glowing.

He had installed cameras throughout the first floor months ago after a package theft in the neighborhood.

The monitor showed several live feeds.

The front entrance.

The kitchen.

The living room.

The staircase.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then his eyes locked on the timestamp in the corner.

Vanessa noticed.

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But Marcus saw it.

“What is it?”” she asked.

He didn’t answer.

He walked toward the monitor.

Grace remained frozen beside the sofa.

Ava stayed close behind him.

Vanessa followed slowly.

“Marcus?””

He pressed a button.

The living room footage filled the screen.

The image rewound automatically.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

The room appeared empty.

Then Ava walked into frame.

She was carrying a small stuffed rabbit.

She looked happy.

Normal.

Safe.

Marcus watched.

Then Vanessa entered.

His wife stopped behind Ava.

She said something.

The audio crackled.

Ava shook her head.

Vanessa reached for her.

Marcus leaned toward the screen.

“No…”

Grace covered her mouth.

On the monitor, Vanessa grabbed Ava’s arm.

Ava pulled away.

Vanessa grabbed her again.

Harder.

Then came the slap.

Ava’s head snapped to the side.

The room on the monitor went silent.

Marcus stopped breathing.

Beside him, Vanessa whispered something.

But he didn’t hear her.

He was watching the screen.

Watching his daughter stumble backward.

Watching Vanessa seize her arm.

Watching her drag Ava toward the staircase.

Then Grace rushed into frame.

Grace grabbed Ava’s hand.

Not to hurt her.

To pull her away.

Marcus stared.

His anger drained out of him so quickly it left something colder behind.

Vanessa stepped backward.

“Marcus…”

He slowly turned.

Her fake tears were gone.

Her face was pale.

And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.

Ava tightened her grip on Marcus’s shirt.

Then, in a tiny voice, she said the words that changed everything.

“She pulled me first.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa said nothing.

Then the security monitor made a soft electronic beep.

May you like

The footage continued.

And this time, it showed what Vanessa had done after Marcus left the house that morning.
