Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

My father stared at the photograph for so long that I thought he had stopped breathing.

Rebecca was standing beside the front entrance of Bennett Construction.

She wasn't smiling.

She wasn't posing.

She was looking directly at the camera.

Like she knew someone was watching her.

The date printed beneath the photograph was six months before my father met her.

Before the wedding.

Before the pancakes.

Before she ever called me sweetheart.

My father slowly lifted his eyes.

“Where did you get this?””

Richard Hale placed the photograph back into the file.

“From Claire.””

My father looked stunned.

“Claire had this?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“A few weeks before she died.””

The room became silent.

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Richard, leave.””

He ignored her.

My father looked at him.

“You knew Claire was investigating Rebecca?””

Richard nodded.

“She contacted me because she didn't trust what was happening inside the company.””

My father looked toward Rebecca.

“What was happening?””

Rebecca laughed quietly.

“This is ridiculous.””

Nobody answered.

She pointed at Richard.

“You disappeared for years, and now you show up with a photograph and expect everyone to believe you?””

Richard looked at her.

“You're right about one thing.””

“What?””

“I disappeared.””

He paused.

“Because Claire told me to.””

My father frowned.

“Why would she tell you to leave?””

Richard looked at the folder on the desk.

“Because she thought someone inside the company was trying to damage Bennett Construction.””

My father's face changed.

“Someone inside?””

Richard nodded.

“She didn't know who at first.””

Rebecca rolled her eyes.

“This is a joke.””

“No,” Richard said.

“It's the reason Claire created the protections around Lily.””

My father stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.””

Richard opened the file.

Years of documents were inside.

Emails.

Bank records.

Copies of contracts.

And handwritten notes.

“I was one of the first people who helped Claire and David build Bennett Construction.””

My father nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“We were small. We had no investors, no major clients. Claire handled the numbers because she was better than both of us.””

A faint smile crossed his face.

“She always was.””

Richard looked down.

“She noticed irregularities before I did.””

“What kind of irregularities?””

“Money disappearing in small amounts.””

My father's expression darkened.

“How small?””

“Small enough that nobody noticed.””

Richard explained that the missing money wasn't taken all at once.

It was moved through different accounts.

Small transfers.

Repeated expenses.

Fake consulting fees.

Enough to avoid immediate attention.

“But Claire found it,” my father said.

Richard nodded.

“She started tracing everything.””

“Who was responsible?””

Richard looked at Rebecca.

The room went silent.

My father followed his gaze.

“No.””

Rebecca crossed her arms.

“You're accusing me?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

“I am saying Claire suspected someone connected to you.””

My father looked confused.

“Connected to me?””

“Yes.””

Rebecca smiled.

“Exactly. Not me.””

Richard continued.

“She found records showing that someone had been researching the company long before they became part of your family.””

My father's face went pale.

He looked at Rebecca.

“Is that why you were interested in Bennett Construction?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“You're listening to a man who abandoned everyone and disappeared.””

“I left because Claire asked me to.””

“And you expect David to believe that?””

Richard looked at my father.

“Ask her why she knew about the trust before you told her.””

The question froze him.

My father slowly turned.

Rebecca didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

“You knew?”” he whispered.

Rebecca looked away.

“I knew there were arrangements.””

“How?””

She said nothing.

“Rebecca.””

Her face hardened.

“Claire told me.””

My father stared.

“When?””

“Before she died.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

“You knew my wife?””

Rebecca looked uncomfortable for the first time.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She didn't respond.

Richard answered for her.

“She met Claire through a charity event.””

My father looked between them.

“But Rebecca told me she had never heard of Bennett Construction before we met.””

Rebecca sighed.

“Because I didn't want to complicate things.””

“You lied.””

“I simplified.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“You simplified the truth?””

Rebecca stepped forward.

“David, listen to me. I cared about you.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you know about my daughter's trust before you married me?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I watched her carefully.

For three years, I had wondered why Rebecca seemed to hate me from the beginning.

Why she looked at me like I was an obstacle.

Why she never seemed interested in being my family.

Now I understood.

I wasn't the child who ruined her perfect life.

I was the thing standing between her and something she wanted.

Richard placed another document on the desk.

“This is the original agreement Claire created.””

My father looked down.

“What does it say?””

Richard answered carefully.

“It states that no spouse, future spouse, or outside party can gain control over Lily's protected assets.””

Rebecca's eyes narrowed.

“That doesn't mean anything.””

“It means everything.””

“No. It means Claire didn't trust me.””

Richard looked at her.

“Claire had a reason.””

Rebecca grabbed her purse.

“This conversation is over.””

My father blocked the doorway.

“No.””

She stopped.

“I said no.””

The words shocked all of us.

Because my father had spent years avoiding conflict.

Now he was standing firm.

“You are not leaving until I understand what happened.””

Rebecca looked at him.

“You're choosing them.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at the papers.

“I'm choosing the truth.””

Her expression changed.

For a moment, I saw something behind the anger.

Panic.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Her face went pale.

My father noticed.

“Who is it?””

“No one.””

“Answer it.””

She didn't.

The phone kept ringing.

Richard looked at the screen.

Then he froze.

“That's him.””

My father looked at him.

“Who?””

Richard pointed at the phone.

“The person Claire was trying to identify.””

Rebecca quickly turned the phone over.

But it was too late.

I had already seen the name.

*Thomas Voss.*

Richard's face was serious.

“David, you need to know something.””

“What?””

“That name appeared in Claire's investigation.””

My father stared.

“What did he do?””

Richard looked at Rebecca.

“He wasn't working alone.””

The phone stopped ringing.

Then, seconds later, a message appeared.

Rebecca saw it.

And this time, she looked terrified.

My father took the phone from her hand.

She didn't fight him.

The message was short.

*She found out. Leave now.*

Nobody moved.

Because everyone in the room understood the same thing.

Rebecca wasn't the only person hiding something.

May you like

And whoever Thomas Voss was…

He knew we had found the truth.
