Chapter 2: The Owner Was on His Way

For seven seconds after the call ended, nobody moved.

Then Marcus Reed cleared his throat.

“Miss Brooks, perhaps we should move to a private office while we sort this out.””

Danielle stared at him.

“Ten minutes ago, you wanted security to throw me outside.””

“I was acting on the information available to me.””

“You didn't ask me a single question.””

Marcus glanced toward the reception desk.

Two employees immediately looked away.

“I understand you're upset.””

“No,” Danielle replied.

“You understand that my father owns this hotel.””

The words landed harder than she intended.

Marcus's cheeks flushed.

Evelyn Whitmore recovered first.

She slid her phone into her handbag and lifted her chin.

“This is ridiculous. Anybody can claim to be related to the owner.””

Marcus nodded a little too quickly.

“That's true. We still need to verify the situation.””

Danielle looked at him in disbelief.

“My father has already told you who he is.””

“And I'm sure he'll be happy to provide identification when he arrives.””

Evelyn smiled again.

“There. Exactly. I knew something was wrong with this whole performance.””

She turned toward the crowd.

“Honestly, the things people will do to get attention.””

The man with the briefcase stepped forward.

“Are you serious? We all watched you hit her.””

Evelyn swung toward him.

“Why are you still here?””

“Because I'm waiting for my car.””

“Then wait quietly.””

“No,” he said.

“I think I've been quiet long enough.””

A woman seated near the entrance stood up.

“I saw it too,” she said.

“The young mother was sitting there with her baby. Mrs. Whitmore walked over and started shouting.””

Another guest nodded.

“She never touched her.””

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

“You people are making a terrible mistake.””

Danielle looked around.

Only minutes earlier, the witnesses had seemed determined to disappear into the expensive furniture.

Now that the owner had been mentioned, their courage was returning.

It was an uncomfortable realization.

But she couldn't blame everyone. Fear made people cautious. Money made them cautious. And in places like the Sterling Crown, a complaint from the wrong person could cost an employee their livelihood.

Still, someone had to speak.

And the first person willing to do it had been a stranger with a briefcase.

“Thank you,” Danielle told him.

He nodded.

“My name is Peter Collins. I was here the entire time.””

Before Danielle could respond, a woman in a navy hotel uniform hurried out from behind the reception desk.

“Mr. Reed?””

Marcus turned sharply.

“What is it, Olivia?””

The receptionist held a tablet against her chest.

“Security has confirmed that the lobby cameras recorded the incident.””

Evelyn's head snapped toward her.

“And?””

Olivia hesitated.

“Mr. Reed, the footage shows Mrs. Whitmore striking Miss Brooks.””

A murmur spread through the lobby.

Marcus's expression darkened.

“Have you shown anyone else?””

“No, sir. I came directly to you.””

“Good. Keep it that way until we can review the recording.””

Olivia looked uncomfortable.

“Of course.””

Danielle studied the young receptionist.

There was something in her face that suggested she wanted to say more.

“Olivia,” Danielle asked gently, “did you see what happened?””

The receptionist glanced at Marcus.

“Answer the question,” Danielle said.

“Please.””

Olivia drew a breath.

“Yes. I saw it.””

“Why didn't you say anything?””

The receptionist's fingers tightened around the tablet.

“Mrs. Whitmore complained about me last month. She said I was rude because I asked her to wait while I helped another guest.

Mr. Reed gave me a written warning.””

Marcus's mouth tightened.

“That is not relevant to the current situation.””

“It is relevant to me,” Olivia replied.

Her voice shook, but she continued.

“I saw Mrs. Whitmore walk over to Miss Brooks. I saw her slap her. I wanted to help, but I was afraid I'd lose my job.””

Danielle looked at her for a long moment.

Then she nodded.

“Thank you for telling the truth.””

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

“I should have said something sooner.””

“You're saying it now.””

Evelyn gave a sharp laugh.

“Oh, how touching. Have we finished our little courtroom drama?””

She turned toward Marcus.

“I expect you to remove that recording from the system immediately. My husband will not tolerate this kind of embarrassment.””

Marcus looked trapped between the two women.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we have procedures we must follow.””

“Procedures?”” She stepped closer.

“I have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars with this hotel group. Your Christmas parties, your charity auctions, your private dining events. My husband personally introduced your general manager to half the business community in this city.””

Marcus's jaw worked.

“I understand your concerns.””

“No, you don't. If that footage gets out, I will make certain this entire management team is replaced.””

Danielle adjusted Grace against her shoulder.

“Are you threatening employees because they witnessed your behavior?””

Evelyn turned on her.

“Don't speak to me.””

“You're standing in front of me.””

“And I said don't speak to me.””

Danielle's voice remained calm.

“You hit me. You insulted me. You tried to have me removed from a hotel where I was sitting quietly with my daughter. Now you're threatening people for telling the truth.””

Evelyn's nostrils flared.

“You think your father's money makes you untouchable?””

“No,” Danielle said.

“I think your money has made you forget that other people are human beings.””

For the first time, Evelyn had no immediate answer.

The silence lasted only a moment.

Then she reached for the tablet in Olivia's hands.

“Give that to me.””

Olivia stepped back.

“Mrs. Whitmore, I can't.””

Evelyn grabbed the edge of the tablet.

Olivia held on.

The device slipped between them, struck the marble floor, and cracked with a sharp pop.

Everyone gasped.

Olivia stared down at it.

“Oh my God.””

Evelyn brushed invisible dust from her sleeve.

“She dropped it.””

“I didn't,” Olivia whispered.

“You were holding it carelessly.””

“You grabbed it!””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Enough! Both of you!””

Danielle looked at him.

“Are you going to ask her to leave now?””

Marcus hesitated.

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“Be careful, Mr. Reed.””

The manager's eyes moved between the two women.

Then he turned toward Olivia.

“Go to the back office. We'll discuss the damaged equipment later.””

Olivia's mouth fell open.

“Sir, she grabbed it.””

“I said we'll discuss it later.””

The receptionist lowered her eyes and walked away, clutching the broken tablet.

Danielle felt something inside her harden.

This was no longer simply about the slap.

It was about a system in which the person who caused harm could threaten the people who reported it, while the people who witnessed it were told to remain quiet.

Her father had built businesses for decades.

He had once told her that a company revealed its true character not when everything went well, but when someone powerful behaved badly.

Danielle had never forgotten those words.

She wondered what he would say when he saw this lobby.

A soft chime sounded overhead.

The private elevator doors opened.

A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped out, followed by a security supervisor carrying a folder.

He was in his early sixties, with silver at his temples and a face that seemed permanently composed.

Richard Brooks did not look like a man in a hurry.

But the moment he saw Danielle's cheek, he stopped walking.

His expression changed.

“Sweetheart.””

Danielle's carefully controlled composure nearly broke.

“Dad.””

He crossed the marble floor and wrapped one arm around her shoulders, careful not to disturb Grace.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

He simply looked at the red mark on her face.

Then he looked at his granddaughter.

“Is Grace all right?””

“Yes,” Danielle whispered.

“She's fine.””

Richard touched the baby's blanket with one finger.

“Good.””

He kissed Danielle's forehead.

Then he turned toward Marcus.

“Mr. Reed, I would like to know exactly what happened.””

Marcus straightened.

“Mr. Brooks, welcome. I assure you that this unfortunate situation is being handled.””

Richard looked at him.

“By whom?””

“By me, sir.””

“Then explain why my daughter is standing here with a handprint on her face while the woman who struck her is still threatening your employees.””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Evelyn stepped forward, suddenly adopting a softer tone.

“Mr. Brooks, I'm sure there's been a terrible misunderstanding. I was upset because your daughter walked into me.””

Richard did not look at her.

“Did she?””

“Well, not exactly. But she was standing in my way, and I simply—”

“Did you strike her?””

Evelyn stiffened.

“I barely touched her.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Her cheeks colored.

“I'm a paying guest. I expect a certain standard of conduct.””

“So does my daughter.””

Richard turned toward the security supervisor.

“Daniel, please secure the footage. Make two copies. One for our legal department and one for the independent investigator I'll appoint this afternoon.””

Daniel nodded.

“Already in progress, sir.””

Marcus looked alarmed.

“An independent investigator?””

“Yes.””

“Mr. Brooks, I can handle this internally.””

Richard studied him.

“You had an opportunity to handle it internally. You chose to believe the wealthiest person in the room rather than establish the facts.””

“Sir, I was trying to prevent a scene.””

Richard glanced toward the broken tablet lying near the reception desk.

“You appear to have created a much larger one.””

A few guests exchanged looks.

Evelyn crossed her arms.

“This is outrageous. My husband will hear about this.””

Richard finally turned toward her.

“Please give him my regards.””

She blinked.

“You don't understand. My husband, Charles Whitmore, is one of the principal investors in the Sterling Crown redevelopment project.””

“I know who Charles Whitmore is.””

“Then you know how important our relationship is.””

Richard's expression remained unchanged.

“What I know is that you struck my daughter in front of witnesses and then attempted to intimidate an employee who confirmed what happened.””

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“Your daughter is being dramatic.””

Richard's eyes hardened.

“Never confuse restraint with weakness, Mrs. Whitmore.””

The lobby went quiet.

Danielle looked at her father, feeling the familiar steadiness of his presence. But she also knew him well enough to recognize the danger in his silence.

Richard was not a man who shouted when he was angry.

He became precise.

He asked questions.

He gathered facts.

And then he made decisions.

He turned to Danielle.

“Tell me everything from the beginning.””

So she did.

She explained how she had been waiting by the sofa, how Evelyn had approached her, how the accusations began, and how the slap had landed before Danielle could react.

She told him about Marcus refusing to listen.

She told him about the demand that she leave.

And she told him about Olivia's broken tablet.

Richard listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he looked toward the receptionist's station.

“Where is Olivia?””

Marcus answered too quickly.

“She has returned to her duties.””

“Bring her here, please.””

Marcus hesitated.

Richard raised an eyebrow.

“Is there a reason you can't?””

“No, sir.””

“Then do it.””

A minute later, Olivia returned, her eyes red and her hands empty.

Richard approached her.

“My daughter tells me you witnessed the incident.””

“Yes, sir.””

“And that your tablet was damaged when Mrs. Whitmore tried to take it.””

Olivia swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Did you drop it?””

“No, sir.””

“Are you certain?””

“Yes, sir.””

Richard nodded.

“Thank you. You won't be disciplined for telling the truth. We'll replace the tablet, and you'll have the opportunity to provide a formal statement if you're comfortable doing so.””

Olivia's face crumpled with relief.

“Thank you, Mr. Brooks.””

“Don't thank me for something that should be standard practice.””

Then Richard turned toward Marcus.

“I want every relevant camera recording preserved. I want written statements from all employees who witnessed the incident. And until this investigation is complete, nobody is to contact witnesses about changing or withdrawing their statements.””

Marcus nodded stiffly.

“Understood.””

Evelyn looked as though she might explode.

“You cannot treat me this way!””

Richard's voice remained level.

“I haven't treated you any particular way. I've asked my staff to preserve evidence and investigate an incident.””

“You're humiliating me!””

Danielle almost smiled at the irony.

Richard did not.

“Mrs. Whitmore, nobody here struck you. Nobody here threatened you.

Nobody here demanded that you leave. If you're feeling humiliated, I suggest you consider why.””

Evelyn's mouth opened.

Then she closed it.

For the first time, she seemed to realize that the entire lobby was watching her.

She grabbed her handbag.

“This isn't over.””

Richard inclined his head.

“I agree.””

She turned sharply and marched toward the revolving doors.

But just before she reached them, her phone rang.

She answered it with an irritated snap.

“Charles, thank God. You need to get here immediately. Richard Brooks is making a scene, and his daughter is accusing me of assault.””

A pause.

Then Evelyn's expression changed.

“What do you mean, you already know?””

She stopped walking.

The color drained from her face.

“Charles, what exactly did you sign?””

Richard's gaze sharpened.

Evelyn listened to the voice on the other end, her grip tightening around the phone.

May you like

Then she whispered four words that made the lobby go silent again.

“You sold them everything?””
