Chapter 8: The Choice That Exposed The Real Enemy
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because suddenly, every memory I had of my marriage felt like it belonged to someone else.
The first date.
The proposal.
The wedding.
The moment Daniel held Emma for the first time.
Every beautiful moment had a shadow behind it.
And I hated that.
I hated that Linda had managed to poison even the memories I once protected.
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell me everything.””
His face tightened.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I have spent ten years hearing pieces of the truth from other people.””
I pointed toward the papers on the table.
“From your mother.””
“From my father.””
“From strangers who knew more about my life than I did.””
I took a breath.
“I’m done.””
Daniel looked down.
Then he nodded.
“You deserve the truth.””
My father moved closer.
“Sarah.””
I looked at him.
“Dad, please.””
He stopped.
Because he understood.
For once, I needed to hear it from the person who had the answers.
Not someone protecting me.
Not someone making choices for me.
Me.
Daniel sat across from me.
And for the first time since I met him, he looked completely honest.
“When I met you, I had no idea who you were.””
I listened.
“I was working at the company. I was trying to rebuild my life after everything with my father.””
He glanced at the documents.
“Then my mother found out about your family.””
I already knew that part.
But I let him continue.
“She told me you were special.””
His mouth twisted bitterly.
“She made it sound like she was finally happy I found someone.””
I remembered that.
Linda had changed overnight.
She invited me to lunch.
She asked about my dreams.
She told me I was “the daughter she never had.””
At the time, I felt chosen.
Now it felt like a trap.
“She told me I was lucky,” Daniel said.
“She told me marrying you would bring peace between our families.””
I looked at him.
“And you believed her?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Not because he admitted it.
Because it explained so much.
“You were looking for your mother’s approval.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you found me.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
“I need you to understand something,” Daniel said.
I almost interrupted.
But something in his voice stopped me.
“I did fall in love with you.””
My expression didn’t change.
He continued.
“Not because of your father.””
“Not because of your family.””
“Not because of anything Linda wanted.””
He looked directly at me.
“You were the only person in my life who treated me like I wasn’t broken.””
I felt my heart ache.
Because I believed him.
That was the worst part.
I believed him.
Love and betrayal could exist in the same place.
That was what made it so painful.
“I should have told you,” he said.
“Yes.””
“I should have walked away.””
“Yes.””
“I should have chosen you.””
The words came quietly.
“I didn’t.””
I looked down.
Because that was the truth I had avoided.
Daniel wasn’t a monster.
He wasn’t like Linda.
But he had still hurt me.
Sometimes the people who hurt you most aren’t the ones who hate you.
They’re the ones who love you but fail to stand up when it matters.
Thomas placed his hands on the table.
“There is something you still don’t know.””
I looked at him.
“Of course there is.””
The bitterness in my voice surprised even me.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had explanations.
Everyone had reasons.
Thomas accepted my anger.
“You have every right to feel that way.””
Then he looked at my father.
“But Robert, you need to tell her.””
My father became quiet.
“What?””
Thomas didn’t look away.
“You know what.””
My father’s face changed.
And suddenly, I felt the room shift again.
“No.””
I stared at him.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“I didn’t want you involved.””
My heart sank.
“Not again.””
He looked hurt.
“Sarah.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say you were protecting me anymore.””
The words came out stronger than I expected.
“You all keep using that word.””
I looked around the room.
“Protecting.””
My eyes landed on Daniel.
“My husband protected me by hiding the truth.””
Then my father.
“You protected me by hiding the truth.””
Then Linda.
“You destroyed people by hiding the truth.””
My voice broke.
“I’m tired of being the only person who doesn’t know what’s happening in my own life.””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, my father nodded.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
He took a breath.
“I made a mistake.””
My father sat down.
And the powerful man everyone feared suddenly looked like just my dad.
“After Michael died, I found out Linda was searching for the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The ones connected to the company.””
He looked at me.
“But Michael had already moved them.””
“Where?””
My father looked at Emma.
And my stomach dropped.
“No.””
He nodded slowly.
“The trust.””
The room felt smaller.
“The trust was created for Emma?””
My father nodded.
“Not because she was involved.””
He quickly added.
“Because she was innocent.””
I held Emma tighter.
“Then why?””
Thomas answered.
“Because Michael believed children were the only people Linda couldn’t manipulate.””
Linda’s face darkened.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Thomas looked at her.
“Is it?””
She said nothing.
“You manipulated adults for years.””
Rachel looked away.
“But you couldn’t control what a child would become.””
Linda laughed.
“You’re making me sound like a villain.””
Thomas’s expression didn’t change.
“I’m describing your actions.””
For once, Linda had no response.
Then something happened I never expected.
Emma spoke.
“Mommy?””
Everyone turned.
She looked up at me.
“Are we still a family?””
My heart broke.
Because she was five years old.
And she understood more than any child should.
I knelt beside her.
“Oh, sweetheart.””
I held her face.
“You are my family.””
She looked at Daniel.
“What about Daddy?””
Daniel’s face crumpled.
He crouched down.
“Emma…”
She looked at him.
“Did you hurt Mommy?””
The question destroyed him.
Because it came from his daughter.
Daniel took a breath.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“I did.””
Emma looked confused.
“Why?””
Daniel wiped his eyes.
“Because sometimes adults make mistakes when they’re scared.””
I watched him.
That answer mattered.
Because for once, he wasn’t making excuses.
He wasn’t blaming anyone else.
He was accepting responsibility.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered to her.
Then he looked at me.
“I’m sorry to both of you.””
I didn’t forgive him.
Not yet.
But for the first time tonight…
I believed him.
Suddenly, Thomas’s phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Everyone noticed.
“What happened?”” my father asked.
Thomas listened.
Then slowly looked toward Linda.
“She did it.””
Linda’s face went pale.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at her.
“You know who.””
My father stood.
“What are you talking about?””
Thomas ended the call.
“The backup files were accessed.””
Daniel frowned.
“By who?””
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“The person who has been searching for Michael’s evidence all these years.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“It’s worse.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because it means Linda wasn’t working alone.””
The room froze.
Linda suddenly looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Terrified.
Thomas reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
He turned the screen toward my father.
A name appeared.
A name none of us expected.
My father stared.
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What is it?””
My father didn’t answer.
He just whispered:
“This can’t be happening.””
I looked at the screen.
And when I saw the name…
I felt like the entire world stopped.
May you like
Because the person who had been helping Linda destroy my family…
Was someone I trusted more than anyone.
