Chapter 4: The Secret Hidden Behind The Perfect Family

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The Christmas tree lights flickered in the corner of the room.

Red.

Gold.

Green.

A picture-perfect holiday scene.

Except nobody at that table felt like a family anymore.

My father’s words hung over us.

“Your husband may not be the only person in this family who has been keeping secrets.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had changed.

Not the way it changed when he was angry.

Not the way it changed when he was uncomfortable.

This was different.

This was fear.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw something I had never seen before.

Guilt.

Real guilt.

“What does he mean?”” I asked.

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence told me more than any confession could have.

My chest tightened.

“Daniel.””

He looked down.

And that was when I knew.

There was something he had never told me.

Something bigger than Linda’s insults.

Something bigger than the years of silence.

My father slowly pulled out the chair at the head of the table and sat down.

“Everyone stays.””

Linda immediately shook her head.

“This is inappropriate.””

My father looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“But what happened to my daughter was.””

Linda’s lips pressed together.

She hated that she no longer controlled the conversation.

For years, she had decided what was true.

What people were allowed to say.

What everyone was supposed to forget.

But now, she was sitting across from the one person she couldn’t manipulate.

“Sarah,” Daniel said quietly.

I looked at him.

“Tell me.””

His shoulders dropped.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

The sentence felt like a door opening.

A door I wasn’t sure I wanted to walk through.

“Find out what?””

Daniel looked at his mother.

Linda immediately stood.

“Daniel, don’t.””

And that was the moment everything became clear.

Because Linda wasn’t surprised.

She was afraid.

“Don’t what?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

My father leaned forward.

“Daniel.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“Your father called because he found something.””

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“About my family.””

I waited.

The entire room waited.

“My father left something behind before he died.””

I frowned.

“Your father?””

Daniel nodded.

“My biological father.””

I stared at him.

Because Daniel rarely talked about his father.

When we first dated, he told me his father passed away when he was young.

He said there were complicated things about his family.

But whenever I asked questions, he changed the subject.

I thought it was grief.

I thought he just wasn’t ready.

I never imagined it was a secret.

“What does your father have to do with this?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at his hands.

“Everything.””

Twenty years earlier.

Before Linda became the woman everyone knew.

Before the mansion.

Before the perfect Christmas dinners.

There was another story.

A story Daniel had never told me.

His father, Michael, had been a successful businessman.

Not as wealthy as my father.

But successful enough to create a comfortable life.

Then one day, everything changed.

Michael discovered financial problems inside his own company.

Money was disappearing.

Documents were altered.

Accounts were manipulated.

And according to Daniel, his father spent years trying to uncover who was responsible.

Until he died.

The official story was that it was an accident.

A car crash.

A tragic mistake.

But now…

My father’s phone call suggested something else.

“Why didn’t you tell me any of this?”” I asked.

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I thought it was over.””

“Thought?””

He looked at me.

“Sarah, when I was a kid, my mother told me my father abandoned us.””

I felt a chill.

“But?””

Daniel hesitated.

“But after he died, I found documents.””

“What kind of documents?””

He looked at Linda.

And Linda looked terrified.

“Documents showing my father didn’t abandon us.””

The room went silent.

My father watched carefully.

“Go on.””

Daniel took a shaky breath.

“He was investigating someone.””

I already knew the answer before he said it.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Linda.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Linda’s face went completely still.

Then she laughed.

A cold, uncomfortable laugh.

“That’s insane.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

“You’re believing this?””

Linda looked around the room.

“At my own Christmas dinner?””

Nobody answered.

She pointed at Daniel.

“Your father was unstable.””

Daniel flinched.

My father noticed.

“Interesting choice of words.””

Linda looked at him.

“What?””

“You immediately attacked the person who isn’t here to defend himself.””

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t know anything about my marriage.””

“No,” my father said.

“But I know about evidence.””

He reached into his coat pocket.

And placed a folder on the table.

My heart started racing.

Where had he gotten that?

“What is that?”” Daniel asked.

My father looked at him.

“Something I received this afternoon.””

Linda’s eyes locked onto the folder.

“You went digging?””

My father ignored her.

“Daniel, before your father died, he contacted someone.””

Daniel stared.

“Who?””

“An attorney.””

The room went silent.

“He left instructions that if anything happened to him, certain information should be released.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What information?””

My father opened the folder.

But before he could speak, Linda stood suddenly.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

“No more.””

Her voice shook.

Not from anger.

From panic.

“I have spent my entire life protecting this family.””

Rachel whispered:

“Protecting us from what?””

Linda looked at her daughter.

And for the first time, she had no answer.

I watched Linda carefully.

All those years, I thought she was powerful because she was confident.

Because she was loud.

Because she always had something to say.

But maybe that wasn’t power.

Maybe it was fear disguised as control.

My father removed a document from the folder.

“Michael’s attorney wrote this letter three weeks before his death.””

Daniel looked at the page.

His hands trembled.

“Why do you have this?””

“Because the attorney found me.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why you?””

My father glanced at me.

“Because the attorney knew your father trusted someone in my company.””

The pieces started connecting.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“Dad,” I said.

He looked at me.

“What is happening?””

His expression softened.

“I was trying to protect you from this.””

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody tells me the truth.””

My father looked hurt.

And I realized something.

Even he had secrets.

Everyone had secrets.

Daniel.

Linda.

My father.

The only difference was…

I was always the person left in the dark.

Rachel suddenly stood.

“I knew something was wrong.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at Daniel.

“When Dad died, Mom changed.””

Linda immediately turned.

“Rachel.””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“I’m done.””

She wiped her eyes.

“You always told us not to talk about Dad.””

She looked at me.

“You always told us he was a bad man.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rachel gave a painful smile.

“Because every time I tried, Mom reminded me what happened to people who betrayed her.””

The room went cold.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Rachel looked at Linda.

Then whispered:

“She destroyed people.””

Linda slammed her hand on the table.

“Careful.””

Rachel jumped.

And everyone noticed.

Everyone.

My father slowly stood.

“Sarah.””

I looked at him.

“There is something else.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He looked at the folder.

Then at Daniel.

“The documents I received today contain proof that someone inside this family tried to hide what happened to Michael.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“No…”

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

Linda’s face became pale.

“And the person who signed the documents…”

He paused.

Everyone waited.

Then he said:

“Was Linda.””

The room exploded.

Daniel stepped backward.

Rachel covered her mouth.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

Linda looked at everyone.

Then she did something I never expected.

She smiled.

Not a nervous smile.

Not a scared smile.

A confident one.

And that terrified me more.

Because it meant she wasn’t defeated.

She looked directly at me.

“Sarah.””

Her voice was soft.

Almost kind.

“You think you know what happened tonight.””

She took one step closer.

“But you have no idea who your husband really is.””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Linda looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

And whispered:

“Ask him why he married you.””

Daniel’s face went white.

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly…

May you like

I wasn’t sure if Daniel had failed to protect me.

Or if he had been hiding something from me from the very beginning.
