Chapter 2 - THE BOUNDARY LINE

Silence fell over the room, broken only by the baby’s whimpers and the rain drumming outside. Mrs. Lisa pushed herself slowly upright, clutching her chest where her son’s foot had struck. She stared at Khai as if seeing him for the very first time. Never once in his life had he raised his voice to her. Never once had he defied her. And today — he had physically struck her. For them.

"You..." Mrs. Lisa wheezed, pointing a shaking finger. "You struck your own mother... for these worthless creatures?"

Khai stood slowly, keeping one arm securely around Linda and their baby. His face was pale, his eyes dark and cold — a look she had never seen before.

"I did what any husband and father would do," he said evenly. "I walked in and saw you trying to sLisa p my daughter to death. If I had been a second later... she would be gone. Do not speak to me of duty or blood, Mother. What you did just now is unforgivable."

"She is a girl!" Mrs. Lisa shrieked. "A useless girl! She brings shame to this family name! Your father’s bloodline dies with you if you raise a daughter!"

"My daughter carries my blood," Khai answered, his voice rising. "And she carries the name I choose to give her. That is enough. That should be enough for anyone. Including you."

He turned his gaze fully upon her, every word deliberate and sharp.

"Linda has done nothing but honor you as her mother from the day we married. She endured your words, your silence, your cruelty — all without complaint. And today... you tried to kill her child. My child. That is where the line is drawn, Mother. You may not cross it. You will not cross it."

Mrs. Lisa ’s mouth opened and closed, stunned into silence by the firmness of his tone. She realized then that the obedient son she had known was gone. Standing before her was a man who had found something he loved more than his attachment to her approval.

Khai bent down and lifted Linda gently to her feet. He wrapped his coat around her shivering shoulders, then carefully took the crying baby into his own arms. He stroked the tiny face until the little one quieted, then looked back at his mother.

"We are moving into the guest room at the far end of the house," he said. "From today, you will not enter our room. You will not touch my wife. You will not approach my daughter. If you cannot treat them with respect... then you will keep your distance. Choose, Mother. Peace — or silence forever."

He did not wait for an answer. He guided Linda away, carrying his daughter against his chest, shielding them both from the woman watching in rage and disbelief.

That night, as Khai tended to Linda’s bruises and checked his daughter over and over again to ensure she was unharmed, he made a silent vow. He would burn this house to the ground before he ever let anyone hurt his family again.
