Chapter 10 - JUSTICE AND CHOICE

The next day, Khai discreetly installed a small recording device high in the corner of the main room — where it could not easily be seen. He tested it. It worked perfectly.

Then he left for work as usual — but did not go far. He hid nearby and waited.

As soon as Khai was gone, Mrs. Lisa entered the house. She found Linda sitting quietly with Mai. And believing herself unobserved, she dropped every last pretense.

She shouted. She threatened. She admitted to hiding things, to spoiling food, to writing the false letters. She laughed at Linda for being helpless, for having no one to believe her, for being trapped inside the house with an enemy she could not fight.

"I will destroy you," Mrs. Lisa declared openly. "And when Khai finally casts you out... I will raise Mai as my own. She will never know she once had a mother like you. You are nothing. You will always be nothing."

Linda sat frozen, Mai clutched tight, silent tears rolling down her face.

From outside, Khai listened to every single word. His heart broke — not from anger alone, but from sorrow. He had wanted to believe his mother was capable of goodness. He had wanted to believe she could change. But hearing her speak with such hatred, such cold calculation... he realized she would never change. She would never accept them. She would never rest until she had destroyed everything he loved.

Khai stepped inside.

Mrs. Lisa froze. Her face went pale. She realized instantly that she had been recorded. That every threat, every lie, every admission... had been captured.

Khai walked past her to Linda. He kissed her gently, wiped her tears, whispered: "It is over now. Truly over."

Then he turned to his mother. He held up the device.

"Every word," Khai said. "Every threat. Every lie. Every admission. It is all here."

Mrs. Lisa staggered backward. "Khai... I... I was angry... I did not mean..."

"You meant every single word," Khai said quietly. "You have not changed. You never intended to change. You came back only to destroy us. You nearly killed my wife and child once. You have tormented them every day since you returned. And you would have continued... until one of us was gone."

He paused, breathing steadily, his voice heavy with sadness.

"I wanted to forgive you. I wanted to give you a home. But you have proven... you will not live in peace. So now you have two choices. You may leave quietly and never return. Or I take this evidence to the village elders, expose everything, and let them decide your fate publicly. Choose."

Mrs. Lisa looked at her son — and realized with absolute certainty that he would do exactly as he said. He loved his family more than he feared shame. And she had lost all power over him forever.

She looked at the device in his hand. She looked at Linda — terrified but safe, protected by the strongest love she had ever witnessed. She looked at Mai — innocent, loved, cherished. And finally... she understood. She had fought to destroy happiness she could not build herself. And she had lost.

Slowly, Mrs. Lisa nodded. She turned away without another word. She walked out the door, through the gate, and vanished down the road — this time, never to return.

Khai closed the gate. He walked back inside. He sat beside his wife and daughter. He held them close. And for the first time since the day they were married... there were no whispers. No threats. No fear.

"She is gone," Khai promised them, holding his wife’s face gently between his hands. "And nothing... nothing will ever hurt you again."

Outside, the sun broke through the clouds. Mai laughed and reached tiny hands toward the light. Linda leaned her head against her husband’s chest, listening to his steady heartbeat, and finally — truly — began to believe. Love had stood firm. Protection had held fast. And a family, against all odds, had survived.
