Chapter 9: The Last Lie
Marcus couldn't move.
His father stood beneath the hallway light.
Older.
Gray-haired.
But unmistakable.
The same posture.
The same voice.
The same scar over his eyebrow from a hunting accident years earlier.
Marcus whispered, “Dad?””
His father smiled.
“Hello, son.””
Noah grabbed Marcus's shirt.
Marcus stepped backward.
“You died.””
“I had to.””
“You abandoned me.””
“I protected the family.””
“You destroyed it.””
His father looked at Noah.
“That boy remembers.””
Marcus shifted in front of him.
“You're not touching him.””
His father sighed.
“Still protecting him.””
“He's my son.””
“He's a liability.””
Marcus felt rage rise.
Rachel quietly raised the recording phone.
“I wouldn't move.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pressed a button.
Marcus's father's own voice filled the hallway.
“If Daniel fails, take care of Vanessa.””
Then another recording.
Vanessa.
“Once the medication starts, he'll sign anything.””
Then Daniel.
“You promised me Noah would never know.””
His father stared at Rachel.
“You think recordings matter?””
Rachel smiled.
“They do when they're backed up.””
Marcus's father looked toward the front door.
Police sirens sounded in the distance.
His expression changed.
“How?””
Rachel lifted the phone.
“I sent the files ten minutes ago.””
Marcus looked at her.
“To whom?””
“State investigators.””
His father took one step backward.
Then another.
Vanessa covered her face.
Daniel sat heavily on the stairs.
Noah stood silently with Buddy.
Marcus looked at his father.
“Why?””
The old man stared at him.
“Money.””
“That was worth all this?””
“Money is never just money.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You ruined your sons.””
His father looked toward Daniel.
“Daniel was weak.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“And you were cruel.””
His father turned away.
Then Marcus noticed something on the floor.
A small red light.
A camera.
The entire confrontation had been recorded.
He looked at Rachel.
She nodded.
Everything.
Every confession.
Every threat.
Every lie.
The front door opened.
Police officers entered.
His father raised his hands.
Vanessa began sobbing.
Daniel didn't resist.
Marcus looked down at Noah.
The boy's cheek was still faintly red from the slap.
Marcus crouched.
“I’m sorry.””
Noah looked at him.
“You believe me now?””
Marcus's eyes filled.
“I believe you.””
Noah wrapped both arms around his father.
Buddy pressed his head against them.
For a moment, the house was quiet.
Then one of the investigators approached Rachel.
“We found something else.””
She handed Marcus an envelope.
“It was mailed to me six months ago.””
Marcus opened it.
His mother's handwriting appeared again.
There was only one page.
“If the truth ever reaches you, remember this: Noah was never the danger.””
Marcus read the next sentence.
“The person protecting him was.””
He frowned.
Then looked at Rachel.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel's face went pale.
“I don't know.””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
There was one final line.
And his mother's words made no sense until he saw the name beneath them.
Rachel Cole.
Marcus looked up.
Rachel whispered:
“Your mother knew I would be the one to save him.””
But there was something else in the envelope.
A photograph.
Rachel was standing beside Marcus’s mother.
And behind them stood a woman Marcus had never seen before.

On the back of the photograph were five words:
SHE IS NOAH'S REAL MOTHER.
